Law-enforcement officials gearing up for the Middle East peace conference next week in Annapolis will be on the lookout for “lone-wolf terrorists” trying to disrupt the meetings.
According to a terrorist threat assessment issued this week by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, there is no credible information that “extremist organizations” based in Maryland have targeted the conference or nearby Islamic or Jewish sites for disruption or a terrorist attack.
“Nonetheless, DHS does not discount the threat of the lone-wolf terrorists, including individuals radicalized by homegrown extremist groups or Internet content,” the threat assessment said.
The three-day conference begins Tuesday at the Naval Academy and is an attempt to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks for the first time in seven years. President Bush will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
