She died a hero in 9/11. Now her family wants to rename the street where she grew up.
Her life ended in a Pennsylvania field. It began on Booker Street in Ft. Pierce.
Now the family of CeeCee Ross Lyles wants to rename the road after her.
“What our family is trying to ensure for CeeCee's memory is that our community, our city, our county, always remember 9/11 and Flight 93,” says Lyles’ aunt, Frances Watson.
Lyles was a flight attendant on United Flight 93. On September 11th, 2001, the plane's passengers and crew members fought to overcome hijackers.
The plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
“I would not dare to say what I think CeeCee did, but I think she took a part, just as well as the passengers that prayed and the passengers that attacked the terrorists,” says Watson.
Lyles had a long history of helping before 9/11. She served six years as a police officer in Ft. Pierce.
Becoming a flight attendant was a lifelong dream.
A bronze statue honoring Lyles overlooks the Indian River. Her family also wants a reminder they can see daily.
Renaming the road costs less than $1,000 and some of CeeCee's former neighbors support the change.
More than six years after her death, the family moves on, but never
forgets.
“Ft. Pierce, Florida will be known not only for our beautiful beaches, all the reconstruction that we're doing in our city, but it will also be known as the home of Ceecee Ross Lyles,” says Watson. “One of the heroes of Flight 93.”
