Fugees —Yes, Even Lauryn — Reunite For Dave Chappelle's Block Party

09.20.2004

BROOKLYN, New York — The remnants of Hurricane Ivan may have put a damper on the last weekend of summer, but the rain, clouds and brisk weather could not do the same to the old-fashioned block party Dave Chappelle threw on Saturday.

For the biggest comedian in the world right now, the secretive neighborhood jam was his Summer of '69, a hip-hop and R&B Woodstock that featured a hit list of his favorite artists, including a surprising reunion of the Fugees, the hip-hop trio that disbanded after their second and last album, The Score, sold 15 million copies worldwide. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras came together to headline the day-long concert, which was shot by famed film and music-video director Michel Gondry for a likely DVD release.

Chappelle graced the stage to introduce the Fugees to a crowd that was expecting just a Lauryn Hill solo performance (see "Chappelle Throwing A Block Party With Kanye, Lauryn, Others"). "We were going to have Lauryn Hill perform tonight but Columbia [Records] wouldn't clear her songs," Chappelle said, referring to Hill's record label. "So she came up with a better idea. Ladies and gentleman — the Fugees!"

As the thundering bass of Bone Crusher's "Never Scared" blasted through the speakers, Wyclef ran onto the stage, getting the crowd hyped with lines from the Fugees' "Nappy Heads (Remix)." Moments later, Hill entered the stage, receiving a rousing cheer from the hundreds of fans who had gathered on the L-shaped block in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. Wearing a short khaki coat over a flowing white pantsuit and Yankees cap cocked to the side, Hill resembled the performer of old — not the unstable, unkempt artist she's been made out to be in recent years.

Hill's verse and the emergence of Pras punctuated "Nappy Heads" and the group's other hits, which included "Fu-Gee-La" and "Ready or Not." When Hill hit her verse on "Ready or Not," the crowd joined in enthusiastically: "So while you're imitating Al Capone/ I'll be Nina Simone ..." Though Hill's new work is supposed to be in the singer/songwriter mold, she was all about dropping lyrics on this night, except when she gloriously sang "Killing Me Softly" to minimal accompaniment from the backing band.

The reunion's most delicious moment came when Wyclef, standing at a mic with his guitar, told the crowd it was time to put an end to all the rumors. Immediately, the band behind him unleashed the rhythmic stabs of Lauryn Hill's solo cut "Lost Ones," which many have considered to be a veiled declaration of autonomy from Hill toward her former bandmate. "It's funny how money change a situation/ Miscommunication leads to complication/ My emancipation don't fit your equation," she rapped, shoving herself in Wyclef's grill. While Pras and Hill danced around him with mock anger, Wyclef simply held his pose, eyes rolled upwards as he took the faux-abuse. It was a self-aware moment that underscored the genuine bond the three once shared with one another.

So apparently, this concert is gonna be a movie?

The Weather Makes Way for a Reunion
By KELEFA SANNEH

Published: September 20, 2004

ne of the best outdoor concerts of the summer took place on Saturday, at the last possible moment, as a drizzly afternoon gave way to the year's first chilly autumn night. The concert, starring the reunited Fugees, was billed as a "block party" by its organizer, the comedian Dave Chappelle. But it was also - perhaps mainly - a movie set: the director Michel Gondry was recording the whole thing for a concert film, which helps explain both the impressive lineup and the slow pacing.

There were no second takes, but there was lots of down time, which meant Mr. Chappelle had to find creative ways to kill it. Early on he commandeered the bongos for some fake protest poetry. "Five thousand black people, chillin' in the rain," he intoned - an overstatement. "Nineteen white people, peppered in," he added - an understatement.

The location was a well-guarded secret - a bit too well-guarded, perhaps. Tickets were free, but to get them you signed up online, filled out a casting questionnaire, then showed up at a secret location in Chinatown at 11 a.m., from which you would (eventually) be bused to an out-of-the-way street corner in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, at the L-shaped intersection of Quincy and Downing Streets. The whole process sounds as complicated as one of Mr. Gondry's playful but rigorous music videos, so maybe this was his idea. Who else would turn a concert into a treasure hunt?

There weren't nearly enough people to fill up the block (despite radio announcements on the day of the show advertising the location), but hundreds of concertgoers stuck it out, partly shielded from the elements by free ponchos that resembled oversize sandwich bags; no doubt Mr. Gondry enjoyed the strange sight.

Still, none of this was any stranger than the reunion of the Fugees, the rap trio that has only grown in stature since the release of its second and - so far - final album in 1996, "The Score." The group's name has come to symbolize hip-hop bohemia, and it was memorably adjectivized by Kanye West in a rhyme about a materialistic lover: "Five years ago, you was so Fugees/Now you don't want nothing unless it costs a few g's."

Yet the members themselves don't seem to spend much time happily reminiscing about the early days. Just last year one of them, Wyclef Jean, was offering gentle correction and friendly advice to his former bandmate Pras on a track whose title labeled Pras a fake. And since the huge success of her 1998 solo debut, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," Ms. Hill, the third member, has mainly avoided the spotlight, surfacing for a tumultuous "MTV Unplugged" acoustic session during which she broke down crying.

So it was a shock and a thrill to see all three of them creeping through "Fu-Gee-La" once again. A few songs later Mr. Jean rhymed, "Jay-Z said, 'The Fugees gon' break up'/He ain't even know, one day we'd make up," and the crowd ignored the form (the easy rhyme, the clunky meter) in order to cheer the content.

Then it was Ms. Hill's turn, starting with, "Killing Me Softly With His Song": she sang the first verse nearly a cappella, building tension, maybe even despair, that dissipated only when the joyful hip-hop beat finally arrived. Near the end she circled around a marvelously ambivalent three-word phrase: "Singing my life, singing my life, singing my life."

What came next was even better: Ms. Hill's "Lost Ones," which has always sounded like a thinly veiled swipe at Mr. Jean. On Saturday night Mr. Jean strummed his guitar and smiled while Mr. Hill rapped on one side of him ("It's funny how money change a situation/Miscommunication leads to complication/My emancipation don't fit your equation") and Pras angrily (and half-seriously?) gestured on the other; it was the kind of performance that made you glad someone was filming.

CHAPPELLE SELLS ‘BLOCK PARTY’ DOC: Universal’s Rogue wins in bidding war during Toronto Film Fest.

(September 16, 2005)

*"Dave Chappelle's Block Party," a documentary that captures the comedian’s outdoor concert in Brooklyn featuring Kanye West and a reunion of The Fugees, was sold to Rogue Pictures, the genre arm of Universal Pictures' Focus Features label.

Rogue beat out Paramount Pictures/MTV Films in a fierce bidding war during the Toronto International Film Festival. Sources close to the production tagged the complex deal at $7 million, with the film's major participants receiving a share of box office revenues as well, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Block Party" was directed by Michel Gondry, an Oscar winner for the screenplay of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," which Focus Features released. About halfway through the movie's first public screening Monday night, Rogue began its aggressive pursuit of a deal for worldwide rights, including home video rights, according to the trade magazine.

"The movie is incredibly dynamic and tremendously entertaining," Rogue president David Linde said. "It's a new kind of entertainment for all kinds of audiences."

Dave Chapelles Blockparty
[07.02.06 19:30]

but once revealed...we realized we were a part of an experiment that involved different demographics crossing paths not knowing we were put there on purpose.

(dont wanna give too much away...)

but this is exciting shit.

YOU KNOW ITS NOT LONG BEFORE A DVD COMES OUT....I hope that when the actual DVD comes out that there is more video of the performances, including the fugees....
They looked so happy on stage...Lauryn was amazing!!!
The funny part was when she was singing, and then she asked the crowd, "Where yall been?"......then the crows points at here, and there like...WHERE YOU BEEN?....she stops singing...tells the band to stop, and she replies, "Wait a minute, yall said where i been?". "Ill tell you where i been, Ive been back there" (pointing to who i believe is either Joshua, or her younger soon, it wasnt Zion, but Rohan was holding him) "Thats where I've been". It was cute....theres like a 4 or 5 minute interview where shes talking about when she first met Clef, it was so good...i cant wait until you guys watch the movie...youll love it...the movie is so hilarious!!!! Im going to go watch it again tonite!!!
Anyone want a bootleg copy? Ill send you one...
lol.
