The best of Lauryn HillTeaming up with Lauryn Hill to make possibly one of the hottest mixes of the year, J. Period is undoubtedly flexing a large amount of muscle power with “The Best Of Lauryn Hill: Fire & Water”. Packed into two cds, this mix covers Lauryn’s illoustrious career, starting with her beginnings with Pras Michel & Wyclef Jean as The Fugees, and traveling on through her successful run as a soloist. You’ll dance and sing along to such hits as Wyclef’s Guantanamera which featured Lauryn, ‘Fugee-La”, “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”, and so many more. Normally, it would have been hard to create a “Best Of” cd of Lauryn Hill, simply because much of her catalog is considered hits. There weren’t very many songs of Lauryn that people didn’t like, and I’m sure that with any attempt, fans would feel like songs were being left out. J. Period works hard at trying to feature her absolute best, throwing in such songs as “Ex-Factor”(the original version plus a Live UK remixed version), “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “The Sweetest Thing”, and “Turn Your Lights Down Low”, a song of Bob Marley’s which Lauryn originally revamped for Marley’s tribute album “A Chant Down Babylon”. The mix also includes selct tracks from her double cd, the live-recorded “MTV Unplugged 2.0”
Even with this mix, and there being two cds, I can think of songs that probably should have been here, beginning with “Final Hour”. A classic tune from “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, fans easlily related with Hill as she spit her always-substantive and elevating lyrics over a simple, yet riveting beat. Also missing were “I Used To Love Him”, “When It Hurts So Bad” with Mary J. Blige, and “Every Ghetto, Every City”. I would have liked to hear the original version of Kanye West’s hit “All Falls Down”, which featured vocals from Lauryn Hill before it was re-recorded with Syleena Johnson.
Nevertheless, J-Period still did a fantastic job with covering Lauryn Hill’s lengthy career. I doubt anyone else could have done it. A lot is to be said for Lauryn Hill as well. With two cds, together containing a total of eighty songs, there’s still so many more hits in her catalog. Even with that being the case, I’m sure the best is really yet to come!
