Fugees concert cologne - 19.12.05
Hi everybody,
It’s me the invisible man who’s back from his very first Fugees concert!
I was waiting for such a long time to see my favourite band! Exactly 10 years!
And when I woke up yesterday morning I felt so sick. My head was aching and I had a temperature, and I sounded like a raspy old man. So everybody told me to stay at home, but I did not wait ten years to for the Fugees to give up just because of an influenza.
So I drove together with one of my friends to cologne. We showed up there at exactly 17:50 only ten minutes before they opened the doors, but we had the chance to stay in the first row!
The “Kölnarena” is very big, but I think that most of the seats were sold.
I was feeling so weak that I had to sit on the ground while everybody else already stood up to wait for the first band. (you can see it on the pic)

Elvis White did some reggae and dancehall songs, the crowd got a little bit more in the mood. The second act was “Abenaa”, I gues that was her name, she was really great but her music didn’t fit with the mood in the arena. Although she was more into ballads the crowd gave her a big applause, and I think she really deserved that applause.
Then there was DJ Leon, I had some problems with adrop I was eating, I swallowed it and had some problems to breath. (I really, really, really didn’t have much luck on that day) My friend (who was also really sick) didn’t mentioned that, but after a while I got better.
Then Wyclef came on stage and the crowd went crazy! The sound was great! I was not expecting such a good sound, after reading all these reviews. I’ll short up the concert on some crucial facts, cause the rest was already mentioned in all the reviews before:
1. The sound was perfect!
2. For me Lauryn was the party maker! Wyclef seemed to be pissed that his monitors were not loud enough, and he never really smiled. Lauryn was jumping, dancing, laughing,.talking to the crowd. Wyclef was also communicating with the crowd, but all the time it looked like he was just doing his job (I can understand this, cause you can’t be happy everyday)
3. I’m really asking myself why Pras is a member of the Fugees. I mean, what is his job? I think back in the days when everything started with the Fugees, Wyclefs aunt told him to keep an eye on his little cousin. He was (like all the other people mentioned) invisible! Lauryn and Wyclef even rapped over his parts
4. Lauryns voice was so strong! She rapped like a goddess! Wyclef was great, but Lauryn Hill was killing the rhymes, honestly she was brilliant. I have much more respect for her skills now than before.
5. Lauryns style was as always off the hook. She wore a trenchcoat that looked like the one she wore one year ago in that mysterious video shooting. I was always one of the people who said, she wears a weave, but I am sure now that it was her hair. Definitely. Maybe the bigger afros were not her hair, but yesterday she took off her cap and went with her hands through her hair. She was shaking it all the time. There can be no weave on this world that can look so real and stays so constantly on a head.
6. In my opinion there were too many gunshots during the songs and sometimes it got a little too chaotic
7. My favourites were “Lost ones”, “Fu-gee-la” and “How many mics”
8. At the end they mentioned “Take it easy”, but they didn’t play it
9. lauryn did her “towel- thing”, she even went down to the audience. But after that I got a little pissed, cause Wyclef was standing on the stage for about 10 minutes. He stood there gave some of his clothes to the people and went back to the backstage area, thena he came back and did it again. Everybody was expecting an encore and at the beginning it was still funny, but after 10 minutes watching him how he throws his clothes to the people it got really boring and I think they should have done another song when he wanted to do jokes like this.
10. Wyclef jumped from the stage together with Pras, it looked like he was bleeding (the same joke they did on all the other concerts) They also did this “Where is my cell phone thing” BORING!
11. They did a great job, but I must really confess that all these show elements of Wyclef became uninteresting cause it was so obvious that it was not spontaneous
12. Lauryn Hill put all her soul into her songs, that was really impressing. At the end she tried to pull off wyclefs pants and than she went off the stage. She did her thing, and she doesn’t need to joke around like a fool.
At the end I want to say: It’s unbelievable to see a mother of four, dancing, rapping and singing like this. Lauryn Hill was unbelievably good in shape!
Ok. That’s all. I’ll poste my picture in the photosection
PEACE
The invisible man

invisible man - December 20, 2005 01:49 PM (GMT)
Not really, it's got worse in the night, but it defintely wothrs it! ^_^
Everybody should visit a Fugees concert, it's an experience that you can't get on any other hip hop concert.
It was cool to see that they didn't play the songs like ten years ago. They changed a lot, really! In a positive way.

sybillecutey - December 20, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
from another Lauryn message board :
A friend of mines go to New School University in NY and her friend auditoned for Ms HIll cuz she was lookin for trumpet players for her 2006 tour and :
We've had both Erykah and Roberta in Miami to headline community consciousness-raising events, not in their traditional roles as entertainers but speaking about the importance of role models in transforming communities and how each person's positive contributions make a difference. Roberta was in Liberty City; Badu went to South Beach, an example of uniting a multicultural community. Three weeks ago we actually had Lauryn Hill, who was scouting for her upcoming tour, do a jam session with local musicians.

fugees-online - December 20, 2005 02:44 PM (GMT)
hej! Im back as well- it was really a brilliant concert tho I had some problems getting there. My train was late and then it broke down in frankfurt so they had to change it. I was sooo late and sooo pissed. I arrived at the hall only at 20 past 8pm (concert started at 8pm) and the caribbean band was already playing... thefloor already corweded. And I was standing all the way in the back... Well, slowely I was getting closer and closer to the stage. And when Wyclef came on and did Jaump Around everybody went crazy and I got to jump to the front (to the 5th or 6th row so it was all good afteall) - it was a really energetic show. There is not much to add to invisibles review. The setlist was similar to all the other concerts...
In comparrison to the HAMBURG concert the sound was REALLY GOOD, the crowd was in a much better mood (in Hamburg there was no support act so the people just stood around being bored for a vERY long time) - in Cologne the crowed really went crazy. But I disagree that lauryns voice was strong... she sounded a bit raspy (I guess from doing all the concerts, it was much much better in Hamburg) but it was still good. Her rapping was amzing. Oh, and I agree IT IS her HAIR (for all that are interested, I even RECORDED the PART where she takes of the hat and runs through her hair... Ill post it soon!)
a really hyped show!! Very hyped, sometimes chaotic but it comparrison to Hamburg the show was much more polished (although a lot of the stuff was still improvised ...)
A highlight for me was when lauryn was singing "It was theee kiinnnng - thie kiiing - the kiiiing - Haille Selassie..." for about 20 times, daning around like in trance... I also recorded a part of that but I got my camera out too late so it is only the end of that singing and dancing I rrecorded... but you still get a clue.
Wyclef threw all his cloth into the crowd! That was hillarious.
He also did his same old same old "freestyle" - I could already rap along - that was boring, and of course his "got busted by german cops, weed" storys... <_< But I dont think he looked like he was only doing his job... :badmood:
PRAS... well... he was just... PRas... he really got heard while trying to get into the crowd. I didnt really see it but someone frrom the 1st row told me afterwards...He has bad luck all the time...! oh well...
I agree: the background singers were really amazing... Jerry Wonder too (bass player). He had soo much fun joking around with Clef and Lauryn...
peace!

Honestly, I think Pras is totally stoned during these shows (Gazes into the air, falls everywhere etc.) It's really wack.
I'm SO glad you all had a good time and I'm too excited about the solo tour news Sybille! A trumpet player? That sounds so interesting.

fugees-online - December 20, 2005 08:03 PM (GMT)
ok it went like this...
at the end of the show, lights were already on, they came back on the stage. lauryn hill was handing out towels and stuff, actually pointing at people she wanted to give the towels to. and then wyclef started to throw his clothes into the crowd. first his adiddas jacket, than his shirt, his left shoe, his right one... the crowd was screaminf for more... then jerry wonder (bass player) came from the back and tried to pull down clefs pants as well... they had a little fight... and then there were a whole bunch of people on stage, alot of assistand and stuff.... lauryn hill was still on stage and then she went to wyclef and also tried to pull down his pants... not that seriouly tho. It was just a joke... she wasnt really serious. But it was fun to watch... shit was priceless. Unfortunatly I didnt record that part... I do have a small clip of clef running around on stage half naked but the action was already over... :-)
oh, by the way: at the end clef really dropped his pants and threw it in the crowd.
peacE!

invisible man - December 20, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah I must agree with fugees-online. her voice was a little bit raspy, but didn't you mention the beginnig of Killing me softly? It sounded like an opera singer!
maybe I was a liitle bit hard, wyclef wasn't just doing his job, but I was a little bit shocked about the way he talked to the soundman (maybe he was still angry about the bad sound at the other concerts). I was really surpised that lauryn was very, very, very, firendly to every member of the crew. She was laughing all the time.
And about lauryns voice again: maybe for you it was differnt because you stood in the middle, on my side her voice sounded at times raspy but always incredibly big. ther was a lot of volume in the voice and less shouting singing, like in the doo wop version she made at the mobo's,
And for all the haters: There were so many white poeple on stage! How could this woman be a racist! She was actually joking with the guitar player, a white guy.
PEACE
