Lauryn Hill, De la Soul Help Launch Current TV
By: Alyssa Rashbaum
October 4, 2005
Lauryn Hill, De la Soul and Slum Village will take the stage in New York's Central Park to help celebrate the Al Gore-co-founded television station, Current TV.
Hill will introduce the station at the "Take Back TV" event, which will take place at Rumsey Playfield on October 6 from 6:30-8:30pm (gate open at 5pm), while De la Soul, Slum Village, Fishbone, Rich Medina, Malene Younglao and others will perform. Tickets to the event, which will help introduce the network to a wider audience, are free but must be obtained at www.takebacktv.com to gain admittance.

Comment The network, launched on August 1, 2005 and available in New York on Channel 103 on Time Warner Cable and Channel 366 on DIRECTV, is being labeled the first national network created by, for and with an 18-34 year-old audience. In addition, the programming is supplied in part by that audience. Current TV's short-form programming ranges from trends in technology, fashion, music and videogames, to issues like the environment, politics and relationships.
"In April, Current held a pre-launch celebration outside our headquarters in San Francisco for 6,000 attendees," said Current TV co-founder and former Vice President Gore in a statement. "We united world-class talent for an unforgettable night of live performances and a historic jam session, but what made the evening truly powerful was the outspoken crowd that came out to show us there's a very real, tangible demand for a network that empowers them to create the TV they want to watch.
"This New York celebration extends the same message, encouraging young adults to help create a new kind of television, and to demand that their voices be heard." http://www.vibe.com/news/news_headlines/20...nch_current_tv/

I dunno - I only know that she performed those 2 songs...
I think she looks good, not much different from her shows this summer. I love the fro! I just hope she can keep her balance :D The only thing I don't really like is her shoes. I hope somebody has recorded this, so we can see it!
invisible man - October 7, 2005 10:16 AM (GMT)

This is a review from DAECLECTICMC at
Runboard... It about Lauryn's performance last night:
Im just coming home from the concert... I still feel like Im in a dream... My DAY STARTED BAD BUT IT GOT GOOD QUICKLY. By the time I stepped off the 6 train on 68th street I knew I was going to be late... I walked in the opposite direction away from central park and by the time I realized I made a mistake I was too far gone... I started walking back and at the same time tryna get a cab but it was to no avail cabs dont stop everyday for nikkas in hip hop gear or for nikkas at all... 3 blocks down I got lucky when I saw a yellow cab parked on the side of the street... A jamaican lady was the driver I asked her if she could take me to E.69th not knowing I was only 2 blocks away... This lady took me to w.69th I was so pissed... I was ready to scream at her but I controlled myself opened the door of the cab and on the count of 1..2..3 ran as fast as I could. She got out the cab and screamed "MUDDAFUKKA!". After a 10 minute walk I got to Rumsey Playground where the concert was taking place but I happened to arrive thru the back entrance where the artists come in... I was bout to pretend I was part of the sound crew but went around like they told me to...
Now Im on line waiting to get in... its after 5... I get in at 5:30. once Im in I go to the front and close to the stage I stand there til 6 then a chinese boy and this white boy stand in front of me and I must say that this chinese boy was gettin on my nerves he had long hair and he kept turning his head so fast that his hair threatened to brush my face many times... thank god it didn't. The concert started at 7 two hours late... it opened with this girl reciting a dope poem... they talked bout the channel for a while then a girl by the name of Malene Younglao performed... that bytch is crazy singing rock n shyt... but she was cool had a nice ass... Lauryn came out for the first time at like 7:35 and she was announced as "Ms.Lauryn Hill" I was just transfixed when she came out... Her Afro is bigger than ever she was wearing a white long sleeve blouse with a blue skirt cut above her knees and she had heels on... her Afro was so big you could barely see her face but she was BEAUTIFUL. The crowd went crazy when she came on stage... she was mostly serious smiling once in a while... she had a clipboard in her hands from where she was supposed to read facts about the channel... I found it funny that she kept saying "I have been told..." everytime she said something about the channel like she did not completely believe in what she was telling the audience. There was this Puerto Rican dude that was very loud and kept shouting "L-boogie" and at some point said "spit a freestyle bout Pras!" she laughed at this. She left the stage and said she will be back... Slum Village performed... Another rock band called "The Suffragettes" performed... Scarlett Johansson came up on stage and introduced Al Gore... A couple of white boys in front of me started smoking "pot" as if they were on woodstock or some shyt De La Soul performed next and they RIPPED IT UP!!! the crowd was going wild to the point they had to come back and perform 2 more songs... Lauryn was called to take the stage shortly after that she again began reading from the clipboard to the shouts of "L-Boogie" "WHERE'S PRAS? WHERE'S WYCLEF?" She was again telling the audience "I have been told that this is the only TV channel where you choose what you want to watch" among other statements she started with "I've been told" when she finished reading she looked at the audience and said "I told myself that I would not do nothing musical this evening (pause) but I've changed my mind." The audience went crazy... she then proceded to sit down in a stool while somebody brought her a guitar. she played the guitar and asked the audience if they could hear when she played... she asked for the sound system to be adjusted so her audience could hear... she then said "Let me serenade y'all" and started singing "My Love" her voice was strong and beautiful... she was so deep in the song that at one point I thought she was gonna cry... but if she was she quickly regained composure... she sang for 4 minutes stopped and laughed a little at the compliments the audience kept screaming at her then continued for 2 minutes to finalize the song. After the song she stood up, put the guitar down and took the mic with her... DJ Period got on the turn tables and she started rapping the opening lyrics to "Lost Ones" the crowd rapped along with her... in the middle of the song J.Period switched the beat to Damien Marley's "Jamrock" and she rapped the remaining verses to "Lost Ones" she got off the stage to cheers and applause people were going crazy... She looked HOT up there and her performance was TIGHT overall. After this the show was pretty much over a boring rocker came on to wrap things up...
P.S- By the way has anybody heard of a rock group called "fish bone"? Wat the fukk was they on? they were retarded specially the lead singer. and guess wat? they were all black... A lot of BLACK ROCKERS performed this evening... were they trying to make a statement?

Another review from
http://www.hiphopmusic.com/Simply beautiful.
Only in New York can you saunter 3 hours late into a free concert in the park, go right to the front of the stage, and see Slum village followed by Scarlett Johansson and Al Gore warming up the crowd for Fishbone (who killed it), followed by De La Soul, followed by an impromptu set from Lauryn Hill ("I wasn't planning to anything musical tonight, but just now I changed my mind"), all in the span of an hour or so.
And Lauryn. I've probably cracked more than my share of jokes about her descent into weirdness. But even carrying all that baggage (plus another questionably tuned guitar), when she walks out onto an empty stage, sits down in front of you and starts to sing, it is nothing less than heart-stopping.
In fact I think it's all that baggage that helps make it so intense now.. because no matter how much any of us makes fun of her misadventures, how could we not be rooting for Lauryn? Watching an artist so beautiful in every sense go through all these trials and tribulations until I wonder whether she'll ever regain her stride, if I'll ever even see her perform again at all.. at this point anytime I see her walk out there I'm on th edge of my seat rooting with all my heart for her to do well..
for her to show us that she's happy and healthy again, that she's at peace with herself and ready to shine.. and then she here she comes with that voice, and it's so powerful and plaintive and yearning, yearning for all those same things we're rooting so hard for her to find.. all the same things, in the end, that we're each yearning to find in ourselves.. It adds up to quite a powerful moment.
And then she puts down the guitar, cues the DJ and spits motherf**king LOST ONES!! WHAT!?!???
Only two songs, but probably the most memorable performance I've seen this year.

I think he/she really hit the spot there. That exactly how I feel! Sybille I also remember you writing somewhere "I'm just so happy everything turned out well" - I guess it's a common feeling among her fans.
I loved this review, it is very well written. Thanks a lot hannsparks (You know, I'm already forever thankful to you, cause you shared Take It Easy with us ^_^ )

Stine Is there really Lauryn Hill street?
Stine - October 8, 2005 08:34 PM (GMT)
No. It was just a commercial for MTV video awards (I don't remember which year - 1999 maybe?) in New York, where they changed some of the streetnames to names of the artists who were performing at the show.
ddd - October 8, 2005 08:37 PM (GMT)
Oh I see..but it would be so cool to have a street with your name :)
Stine - October 8, 2005 08:38 PM (GMT)
Oh yeah! It's funny cause Michael Jackson actually lived on "Jackson Street" when he was little :)
