Title: Serious Question
Description: About Lauryn

Daphne Blake - June 28, 2007 07:51 PM (GMT)
Hey as you can tell I'm new but I've got this question to ask.

I've always liked the Fugees and Lauryn's work but I really got into her over a year ago. I absolutely admire her work but I never knew much about her as a person. But a few people has told me she's really racist which, being as white as you get upset me. However it never stopped me loving her work. But now I've just found out (late I know) that she's touring in the UK and I love to go but then this popped into my head so I thought I'd check this out. Is she really racist? And if she is do you think it would effect me going? Cos I suppose some of her fans may have the same opinions as she does, and knowing my luck I won't find anyone to go with so being a milky white 19 year old girl I may be slightly vulnerable to abuse. Am I overracting? Is there any truths and Lauryn having these beliefs? Someone even told me she once said she rather not sell any albums than have a white person listen. I hope it's not true.

Okay. You are so over reacting. That rumor is so old, and just untrue. If you have been following her music lately, and have read her words, and listen to what she is saying, then you can understand that Ms. Hill is far from racist. She is not a racist. I repeat SHE IS NOT A RACIST.

sybillecutey - June 28, 2007 08:44 PM (GMT)
No she's not. It's just a 10 yr old rumor that started because she was saying that the fugees album sold first in the black community, and that she wouldnt mind if it stayed that way. Because the songs were about experiences that black people had in the ghetto etc...but that she didn't care if people from all over the world loved the music the fugees made at the time.

Not sure I buy that your post is for real.
If it is, I can't believe your 19. The school system has failed you miserably. You need to develop what are called thinking skills. That would include such things as the ability to judge the source and quality of information, cipher out fact from fiction, learn to evaluate evidence and draw logical conclusions.

Apart from someone making the statement, do you have any evidence whatsoever? Do you know her? Do you know anyone that knows her?

Anyway, that ugly rumor is total B.S. It speaks more about those that mindlessly repeat it than it does about LH.

To put your scared self at ease, the last time she toured europe the crowds were every bit as milky white as you. Come to think of it, so was a lot of her band. Checking the list of dates, I would say any in Scandanavia, Nice or the Lucca show are good bets that the ratio of miky white to other will be extremely high. If I see you I might just smack you upside your head to knock some sense in you.

Yep this and she apparentley said "She'd rather her child die than a white person buy her album" Unfortunatley in UK people remember these roumurs more than Lauryns songs. But they are just rumors so dont wory im white and have been to loads of lauryn gigs.

Daphne Blake - June 29, 2007 07:12 PM (GMT)
Well I'm sorry to offend anyone. As I said I know NOTHING about her, I've only got her 1st album and the Fugees 'The Score' which gives no indication. I know you shouldn't believe what your told but I was never sure cos she could be for all I know, I didn't want to believe it but that could be just cos I admire her music so much. How was I to know what her beliefs in colour were, in the songs I've listened to there was no indication. But I'm sooo glad she is not. And about it being a 10 year old rumour, well I was only told it last year and she hasn't done much over here since. Well first I've got to see whether I can go, cos I might not now darn it.

And lucky I am 19 and my school system HASN'T failed me. Just because some of my close friends (some of them being coloured) said what they had seen or believed doesn't make me stupid or nieve. There was every possiblity that she was, cos I don't know her and there is alot of nasty racist out there which is not directed just at blacks or other colours. I still wasn't sure because she always came across to me as intelligent so I hoped it was wrong.

^ Easy now!

There was a video on Youtube once (It's not there anymore, unfortunately) where Lauryn directly adressed this issue. She said she was very hurt by these false rumors, and that her message is very universal. I believe she was a bit more controversial in her younger days tho'. When she was with Fugees. But not today - Why is she only playing European gigs these days, if she hates white ppl? That doesn't make any sense. Plus her former husband and the father of her kids was mixed.

ddd - June 29, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
well, artists have to be prepared for everything, they have to be aware that the statements they give to public sometimes can be misunderstood,so I think and I hope that L learned her lesson from this

sybillecutey - June 29, 2007 09:32 PM (GMT)
Of course she learned it.
She hasn't said anything "controversial" ever since.

MarcAnthony - June 29, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
we dont use the term colored to describe ones color or race...that in itslef is your own racist remark.

ddd - June 29, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
"doesn't matter what color u are,as long as your blood was red"

sybillecutey - June 29, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)

Hey thanks everyone for telling me truth about Lauryn, sorry if I offended anyone for asking.

SoulSistaS - July 20, 2007 09:33 AM (GMT)
I put up a video about her speaking about the rumour and she said that the rumour really hurt her becaus she thinks her music is univeral.

"The differences make us dope" Lauryn Hill

If I'll find the video I'll post it.
