What are "these social drugs"?

I thought she meant alcohol and cannibus. I think she literally meant Social Drugs.

I love this song.

Social drugs is much more than "real drugs"....she uses it as a metaphor to describe all types of social unjustice....I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH TOO!!! Especially the music..how it just picks up towards the end...i listen to it back to back some times...

i've interpreted so much of this song...i have even read the lyrics at poetry sessions and have gotten standing applauses and cheers...(of course i credit Ms. Hill every time i read it!!!)

see......I don't think Social Drugs is a metaphor..I think it is just about social drugs..specifically weed and drink...

The first part is about the "real" social drugs (weed, alcohol), but the second part is about how society brainswashes us etc...

i think social drugs is a metaphor...like the superficialities in life that blind us and numb us to what's really going on...things that people care about that mean nothing...like fashion and looks and money and nice cars and all other material things...those are the social drugs that we get addicted to and chase after, forgetting about what's important.

I know I might be being really anal about this but to me ...saying that social drugs is a metaphor for something is like saying an orange is a metaphor for a banana..
