Title: Brick & Lace invited to sing for Lauryn

Stine - September 6, 2006 07:53 AM (GMT)
Get that Clear featuring Akon is the new single from Brick & Lace.

The diverse sounds that have been brewing in the Caribbean island decades on end offer innovative new music with not only a distinct Jamaican flavor, but everything from gospel, to country, to contemporary R&B and hip-hop. And it's out of this fusion of styles (dancehall, R&B, and singer-songwriter soul) that sisters Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne (otherwise known as Brick and Lace), have been born.

Their debut, Love Is Wicked, features production from the likes of Akon, Raphael Saadiq (Mary J. Blige, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Bilal), Tony Kelly (Sean Paul, Shaggy, Lady Saw, Beenie Man), Full Force (Backstreet Boys, ), and Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas).

Raised in Kingston by a father who is a professional gospel musician and a mother who sang in the choir, the two always had music around them. The two began singing and recording together, working their way into the local dancehall scene as teens. In addition they sought gigs singing back up for more established acts. Their foray into that world lead to them eventually performing at Reggae Sunsplash and even opening for Roberta Flack. Later they were even invited by Lauryn Hill to sing back ups for her as well as perform on her forth-coming second album.

The sisters got their break a little over a year ago when they signed with their current production company, 180 Music, who shopped their music around the states and eventually signed them to Geffen. "I think that the girls are incredibly talented, and that goes without saying," says their manager Marcus Grant, "Beyond the singing and the songwriting, both of which they do very well, Brick & Lace are stars and there is no ceiling to their potential."

And with an album full of radio-ready, songs that are both danceable and catchy, it seems there truly is no roof on the Thorbourne sisters.

i'm pretty sure Akon sung backup on the fugees Ready or Not remix but i'm not sure which one.

LostOnes - September 14, 2006 12:33 PM (GMT)
He did.

I think he did the 'Call Mr. Martin - tell him to build a coffin..'

Louise - September 16, 2006 08:53 AM (GMT)
that was fugee-la rmx...but wasn't it clef and lauryn singing on that? i thought Akon just did that 'Mr. Martin' track with Pras more recently.

Yeah, it was the Fu-Ge-La remix on the mixtape that i was talking about.

Clef does the 'Mr. Martin' thing first and then Akon takes over - '...Call Mr. Martin, tell him to build a coffin, today is that season, for Akon is MC murdering'.

I didn't know Akon was around back in the day (the first song i heard of his, was 'Lonely') - so maybe i just got things confused and his part in the song is only a sample (from the track he did with Pras).

Louise - September 16, 2006 04:16 PM (GMT)
yeah i know which bit u mean....but i didn't realise he was around back then either...the track with pras is much more recent, from when pras released 'win, lose or draw' so it can't be a sample on the fugee la remix as that was first released on 'the score'. Can't believe that akon actually sang on the score...how strange!

Louise - September 16, 2006 04:21 PM (GMT)
i just checked 'the score' cd sleeve, it doesn't say who does the backing singing on the tracks...but Akon is thanked in the thank-yous so it must be him, i can't believe it...i know u guys already knew this but i really didn't realise! :stupid:

I don't hear Akon. I hear Clef and Lauryn's voices synthesized. Akon uses that effect ALL the time. I don't see why he would sing back-up when they already have 2 singers. That is more people to pay!

Woah . . . so Akon was in the music industry back in Feb 96?
How did he meet Fugees ?

I've read conflicting stories that he was from/raised in St Louis and NJ and Afria, dont know which is true . If the NJ story is true it would make sense, maybe that's how he hooked up with Fugees?

But wait, when did he go to jail if he was making music in 96?

Was he really born in 81 ?

Sashka - June 3, 2007 11:27 PM (GMT)
I found this article on the VH1 website

VH1: You sang on The Fugees' The Score. How did you hook up with them?

Akon: They introduced me to the music industry. I used to work at a barber shop in Newark and Clef used to come get his hair cut. At the time he didn't have a deal. We used to go in my basement outside of Newark and just create music. I was one of the original members of the Refugee Camp. I got a basketball scholarship to go to Atlanta and then I ended up leaving.

@ Sashka,
I figured it was some NJ connection.

But now A is claiming that he was an original fugees? Hmm.

I'm wonder if he had been in the group and was as conscious as Fugees( or as consciuos as L) were (L still is), as the solo artist he is now would A be doing stupid sex hummps/acts on stage & throwing ppl from the stage ?

Was he really born in 81 ?

Pls a link 2 that article. Thx.

@Sashka,
Again TY. TY 4 these links. I learned more about Akon.

However if he was running with the Fugees, I think he was born in the 70s. LH was the youngest being born in 75( Clef / Pras were born days apart: 17 Oct 72 and 19 Oct 72 in Ayiti ). I think A may be lying about his age bc he got a late start in the industry.
