Title: Adam Lives in Theory
Sashka - June 19, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
I have a poetry assignment due on Wednesday, and one of the parts of the assignment is to analyze a song's lyrics. I chose to do 'Adam Lives in Theory' because it's my favorite 'Unplugged' song.
I read the lyrics like a million times, but I still can't figure out who Eve is symbolizing. Do you guys have any ideas?
If not, then could you suggest other song lyrics, since I haven't started yet.

hmmmm,I don't think that Eve is symbolizing anything in the song, the song is called "Adam Lives in Theory",and before the song,L's says "When I refer to Adam I'm really speaking about all of humanity without exeption of anybody"

Eve symbolizes that part of us who's naive, blinded by the pride and greed, who doesn't use their common sense, when they're making decisions. I suppose.

"Adam lives in Theory" is also one of my favorite songs. I play it almost every day on my guitar.
From the concept of the song, I would see Adam and Eve as man and woman. Adam, I think represents not only man but mankind/humans. Humans who try to change the world("turn stone into bread")thinking they know more than they don("Masquerading like he got it figured out").
The second verse about eve refers strongly to women in their struggle for emancipation("wanting to be intellectual") and in relationship("caught up in emotion...devotion")
The thirds verse is very much about the consequences sex .
Adam and Eve got a child("Quickly multiplying now the three of them are dying") and Lauryn could mean Aids or something with the poison ,or just the shame of having a child you don't want. It goes on discribing the struggle of live and the complication of maintaining fasade and illusion("Hiding from the truth, desiring to cover up the shame")
Starting with the lines "If we can't agree with who created us to be" the song becomes more abstract and features religion or spirituality.
Lauryn talks then about redirection und starting new. Similar apeals can be found also in "Rebel" or "Mystery of Iniquity".
In the end I think she adresses god("Then he will tell us what were gonna do now...") as the redeemer solving the problems.
Just one line always puzzels me, who knows what it means?
"ONCE HE SATISFIED HIS LOVE HE WONT DENY US"

To me, tt means that God loves us so much and tries to show us how much he loves us and tries to guide us in the right direction because of how much he loves us but we don't realize the magntiude of the love he gives. Lauryn is always speaking of Love and that line means once we accept what God is trying to show us, his love is satisfied. We can't be denied this kind of unlimited, everlasting love.

i think this line means:
if we(humanity) can't agree with who(GOD) created us to be, who says (GOD says) we're guilty everyone before HIS eyes
I don't know, just a guess.

adam lives in theory is one of my favorite songs as well. i think what lauryn is triyng to convey in the song is that the story of adam and eve lives on today in our very own modern day society. where we all have choices and when we make those choices there are consequneces behind those choices. we can choose to do right or we can choose to do wrong. like adam and eve we all are disobedient to the one who created us only he can reconcile us. that's my take :)
