"We're on the right path"

José Antonio Reyes interview in FIFA.com

José Antonio Reyes underlined how thrilled he feels to belong to the Real Madrid squad and, once recovered from his muscular injury, he hopes to make a prompt comeback to the starting eleven of a team that's "moving in the right direction."

Reyes spoke to FIFA.com to make it all too clear how hopeful he is for this season, in which he's convinced that the team will get back to their triumphant years. "We're full of confidence and absolutely convinced that this year the trophies will come," says Reyes, signaling out Barcelona and Valencia as "our two biggest rivals here in Spain."

The Sevillian has not lived the 3-year Madridista drought first hand, but he knows there's been a turnaround. "I wasn't here during the previous regime so I can't say exactly what's changed. But my team-mates have been saying that things are different now and that the changes have been very positive for dressing-room morale," destacó.

He wanted to point out the positive aspects of his prior stage at Arsenal, but he regrets never having been able to adapt to life in England. "I feel really at home in Madrid. Coming back to Spain and playing for Real Madrid means a great deal to me. Living in England just doesn't compare to living here."

"It wasn't easy leaving Sevilla. At the time I wasn't keen on a move because I was really happy at the only team I'd wanted to play for. That said, playing in England was a great experience and I don't regret a thing. I learned so much: a different work ethic, a sense of discipline. Football over there is more physical and there's a lot more contact. Here we favour a more skillful style of play; the quality of the football is higher," explains Real Madrid's number 19.

Despite his "outgoing personality," he was unable "to settle in London at all. It gets dark really early over there, the shops close really early. As the days went by I ended up feeling worse and worse. As a player, when you're feeling down it has a knock-on effect on your performances out on the pitch. When that happens a change of scenery is the best option."

Real Madrid have failed to win any titles lately, "but we've got a squad that is strong enough to win any competition. For me personally, they have always been the best team in Europe and I'm really happy to be here," added Reyes.

Concerning the Spanish national team riddle, Reyes says he ignores what the problem might be, but he's convinced the team will qualify for the Euro. "If we knew where we were going wrong then we'd be able to put it right, but we're going to qualify for the European Championship. Not only do we have the confidence to meet this qualifying group head on, we all know in our hearts that we're going to succeed," sentenced the Sevillian-born winger.

Starter hungry

"I train hard every day to prove that I deserve to start"

An injury kept him from the starting eleven, but José Antonio Reyes is still happy and hasn't lost his contagious smile. Although returning to coach Fabio Capello's lineup has been a difficult task, he knows exactly how to make it back: “Training hard day after day to prove that I deserve to start.”

What are your thoughts on Ronaldo being on the bench?
He's a great player and has been playing well. But the coach is relying on others more than him. He seems fine and well-integrated. He's mentally strong and there's no problem whatsoever.

And you have lost your starting spot as well.
I never said a thing when I started, and I'm not going to now that I'm not playing. I have to accept the coach's decision. I knew playing would be a challenge, and then I had the bad luck of being injured when I was a starter. Making the starting eleven is difficuly, but I train hard every day to prove that I deserve to start.

How is your state of mind?
I am happy and no one can steal this smile off my face.

Do you think all the Ronaldo talk is too much?
He wants to play, and I understand where he's coming from. The whole world knows who he is. I am sure he will play well when he gets his chance.

The President is having lunch with the captains in order to discuss bonuses. Are you going to ask for a lot?
I don't know. Ask the captains. Nothing has been mentioned in the dressing room, and money is never a topic of conversation.

The scorer speaks

"I'll remember the win more than the goal"

José Antonio Reyes was satisfied with his goal, but he's even more happy about the final result. "We're right at the top," said the Sevillian attacking midfielder after the match. Without having to prepare for Cup matches, the team can begin preparing for Saturday's match at Villarreal. "We knew Barcelona had won, so we didn't want to let them out of our grasp."

"The significance of the victory is much more important than the goal. We are on top of the League with Sevilla and Barça. I'll remember the win more than the goal."
"It looked like we had trouble creating scoring chances at first, but we knew we had to take the three points in the second half to take a share of the lead in the table, and we did it."

"If we don't score off a normal play, we can decide the match off free kicks. We have Gago, Sergio… A lot of people who can resolve the match off set pieces."

"We knew Barcelona had won, so we didn't want to let them out of our grasp. We are playing at our desired level. We have a whole week to train and to think about Villarreal next Saturday since we have no more Cup matches."

Asking for an extra push

"We need to stay in the heat of the battle for the League"

Reyes was unable to complete today's training session due to a niggled knee. Before heading to the hospital for an official diagnosis, the midfielder held a press conference at Real Madrid City. "We need to push even harder if we're to stay in the heat of the battle for the League," he said.

What happened against Villarreal? Was it fatigue or pressure?
We're not tired. We had a week off to rest and there are no excuses. We played poorly the full 90 minutes. That's it.

Do you have any physical problems? You withdrew from today's training session.
I'm on my way to the hospital. I think it's a sprained knee. I tried to slow down so I wouldn't run into Higuaín.

Will you say goodbye to Ronaldo?
Maybe he should say goodbye to us. That's his call, not mine.

Last week you went to the Bernabéu after receiving a call from the Sporting Director.
It was a layed back meeting. They wanted to speak about a few things, but it's not that they were giving me any awards. We spoke about my contract, but we'll have to wait.

Do you think the team is short players?
No. We're enough.

Do you feel your efforts are being questioned?
No. All forwards need to score or give the assist. We need to push even harder if we're to stay in the heat of the battle for the League.

Why is the team having so much trouble scoring?
If you know the answer, please tell me. We don't know why. Perhaps we're having little trouble creating scoring chances, but just not hitting the back of the net.

Is Oliveira the solution?
We have Van Nistelrooy, Higuaín and Raúl. There's always a lot of talk when there's a lack of goals.

Don't you think there's a weird atmosphere since you joined the Club?
There were also problems at Sevilla. England was a bit more calm. But I'm not surprised and I'm used to all this. It doesn't help the team. It's our duty to pull through.

Salgado did say there was certain restlessness with everything that is going on.
Maybe there's restlessness, but we are professionals and we'll confront whatever happens. We need to stick together to remain strong and stay on top of the table.

Isn't it a mistake letting Ronaldo go when the team can't score?
Ask the coach or President. That's not my business.

Luis Aragonés will announce his Spanish national team squad list on Friday. Would you like to be on it?
Of course, but I have to see what they say about my knee.
