Vera - August 24, 2006 07:06 PM (GMT)
I like it how is school in England! My English teacher told us how is it and i find is really cool! But I don't know how is it with the marks (or grades... i don't know how do you call them). They are from A to F? and I undertood that A is the best, isn't it? Here in romania they are from 1 to 10 and 10 is the best. But everybody sais that here are the worst conditions from all europe and it is very hard and they also say that in other countries it is "lighter". And the corruption dominares in the scools too (i know this better than anyone ... my mom is a teacher and she hates it ... some parents would be able to kill just to see their stupid children with good marks ... they are going with presents or money to the teachers and most of the teachers do anything after they recieve the money... ) What I noticed is that you have some exams at the end of the school-year... we don't have such things... we get marks every day if the teacher wants to and they give us tests whenever they want to... The school year is divided in two half-years and at the end of each half-year we have some tests (harder that the others wich contains everything we learned that half-year ... in the class i study the tests are from Romanian, math, informatics and we can choose between biology, chemistry and physics - i chose physics). Saturday and sunday is day-off and we have summer holyday from 15 june to 15 sepember, christmas and easter holiday 2 weeks and a free week in february or march between the two half-years.
I am sorry if it was boring what i just said, i just wanted you to know how is school here in romania.
Can somebody tell me more about school in england or anywhere you live?

GoonerLizzy - August 24, 2006 08:16 PM (GMT)
well done for getting into college reyesno1fan

For vera...there are two types of school state run by government or private which you pay for and have an entrance exam. Two major exams take place at 16 gcse's with grades starting at A* and at 18 a'levels with grades starting at A. Though there are other national exams starting from the of age 5 or 7.(cannot remebr which one) At that age that is just mean
All exams are marked by an external examiner not connected to any school so there is no chance of cheating or bribary though always here stories of teachers helping with coursework.
League tables are fearcely compeated especially privae school as they want to pay their high fees.
state school which are highly thought of have huge competition for places and people move house so their children live nea the school letting them have a chance to go. I was lucky i got into mine as my sister went there and my primary school i was put on the waiting list at BIRTH.
Holdiays are in summer end july til beginning of septemeber. About 6 weeks and then 2 weeks at christmas and eater and a weeks holiday october, february and may. School day is about 9-4 though some are earlier.
Alevels allow you entry to uni where the real fun starts :D

~*Emma*~ - August 24, 2006 08:30 PM (GMT)
well done reyesno1fan! What course r u gonna do?

Schools are so competitive over in England, although where i live, we still have grammar schools, so there's an extra exam to do when you're 11 (I was lucky enough to pass!)

Roll on Uni i say!

diwash™ - August 24, 2006 10:33 PM (GMT)
liz's GCSE results

maths - A
english - A
english lit - A
science - AA
tech - A
german - A
rs - A
it - A*
art - A*
french - A*

not bad.

Nay - August 25, 2006 05:01 PM (GMT)
not bad??? if that won't put her on top of her class, i don't know what would!!

Vera... in Lebanon the education system is closer to urs than to england's. our grades are out of 20 (20 being the highest of course). we dont have that kind of corruption over here, but we do have private and public schools. public schools are REALLY bad, so if u want to get a decent education, u have to go to a private skool.(of course u pay a lot more in private skools). private skools over here are mostly french, but i'm in an english one. we have a 1 week holiday on christmas , 1 week on easter, and in summer we get from the end of june to the beginning of october. our scholastic year is divided into 3 trimesters, and at the end of each we have exams of course, but the finals count as 50% of our yearly average.we do get daily tests too and we have to go through official exams when we're 15, and another when we're 18 (when we graduate).
we have saturday and sunday off and the school day lasts from 8 till 2:30 normally.
i guess thats it!!
oh and at the end of every year, our school prepares a science fair that we HAVE TO participate in. our subjects are:
english
arabic
french
math
physics
biology
chemistry
history
geography
civics
sociology
economics
informatics
PE
religion
oh, and we're not allowed to choose, we have to take them all.
i talked too much so i think thats enough!!

Vera - August 25, 2006 05:53 PM (GMT)
Well there is decent education in public school too but you can never be the first in your class only if you have private classes ( wich you have to pay for ) with the most of the teachers. I don't have, but I don't have bad marks... i do my best...But they are not as good as my parents would like... I only had problems with biology. But I passed. It was the only subject i had problems with. Private school is very very expensive! Almost nobody can afford it. Here are 12 school years from 1 to 12 you go to school when you're 7 and you finish it when you're 18. After that you go to university(for that there are some exams you have to pass). Most of the sudents choose universiy because if you don't go to uni you can't find a decent job and you can't support yourself or your family. That's why most of the romanians go to Spain, Italy or Germany to work. I know some people who worked a few month in spain and they gained more money hen my mom(who is teacher) in a whole year... That's the way it is. We have to accept it...

GoonerLizzy - August 25, 2006 06:22 PM (GMT)
what is interesting is that a public school in britain is actually a private school. Eton is a public boys school with fees of about £20,000 a year :o

Nay - August 27, 2006 07:46 PM (GMT)
Is Eton actually a public school??? i never thought it was....it's one of the best actually...
