Roberto Carlos wants Real Madrid stay
March 19, 2006
Roberto Carlos insists he wants to play on at Real Madrid.
Some have speculated that the days of some of the galacticos could be numbered but Roberto Carlos, who has galactico status but joined the club in 1996, is not so sure.
"I want to finish my career in Europe and Madrid and afterwards go to Brazil," he said.
"I have had good offers but they don't interest me. I have bought a new house in Madrid and I want to be here with my children."
He also gave a vote of confidence in Ronaldo, whose future is the subject of much speculation.
"Ronie has his way of doing things and his way of thinking but he looks good to me," said his fellow Brazilian.

Real Madrid's Ronaldo dreams of Barcelona return
March 19, 2006
Real Madrid striker Ronaldo is open to return to former club Barcelona.
DiarioSport says while Ronaldo hasn't decided to leave Real, he has intimated to friends that if he is to leave at the end of this season his preference would be to return to Barca.
Both Inter and AC Milan, plus Brazil's Flamengo have all expressed interest in Ronaldo in the last week. But the Brazilian has told friends he would jump at the chance to return to Barca - even if he was to spend more time on the bench.

Helguera, Robinho face uncertain Real Madrid futures
March 19, 2006
The futures of Real Madrid pair Robinho and Ivan Helguera are in doubt.
Helguera only signed a new contract with Real earlier this season, but has fallen off the first team radar under coach Juan Roman Lopez Caro and could go the same way as Santiago Solari, who was sold to Inter Milan only months after penning a new Real deal.
Meanwhile, Robinho's situation is also bubbling with the Brazilian confused over his sudden axing. The winger had fought his way back into the first team in the New Year, but in recent weeks has been forced to accept a substitute's role without explanation.

Beckham to land £40M Real Madrid deal
March 20, 2006
Real Madrid are ready to hand David Beckham the No7 shirt of captain Raul to convince the midfield ace to sign a new deal.
Becks' new contract could be worth a staggering £40 MILLION over just two years as the club are also willing to give up their 50 per cent split of his image rights.
The People says while Real president Fernando Martin is reluctant to improve on Beckham's current basic deal of £100,000 a week, the idea of a new shirt number will see his image rights profits hit the roof.
In the last three years Beckham has brought in around £95m in replica shirt sales and the number change will only increase the stampede for merchandise.
Beckham has been linked with a move back to the Premiership with Arsenal, but knows he would fail to get a deal worth anywhere near Real's if he moved to London.
Martin said Beckham is "fundamental to Real, both from a sporting and commercial point of view", and added, "when you consider how much money he generates, he does not work out as an expensive option".

Real Madrid coach refuses to explain Beckham bench role
March 20, 2006
Real Madrid coach Juan Roman Lopez Caro refused to explain why he axed midfielder David Beckham to the bench for last night's disappointing 0-0 draw with Real Betis.
"I do not have to give explanations for my decisions," said Lopez Caro. "There are many players who remain outside the team, not only Beckham.
"But I must say that David is an exceptional professional, I am very happy with his work, but there is much competition and Cicinho is at a good level."
Lopez Caro did, however, defend his decision to leave Thomas Gravesen sitting alongside Becks on the bench.
"We thought that we would have more of the ball, that we would enjoy more fluidity and create much more. For that reason I made that decision, I wanted that we were more bold, but Betis knew how to take advantage of this very well."

Perez assures Martin over Camacho Real Madrid return
March 21, 2006
Florentino Perez made a personal call to Real Madrid president Fernando Martin yesterday assuring him that he is not behind any factions on the club's board.
It's been suggested Martin will face opposition over some of his decisions from directors who side with predecessor Perez.
But AS says Perez called Martin yesterday from Miami and said: "You have a free hand to contract (Jose Antonio) Camacho, (Fernando) Hierro, Vicente del Bosque or whoever you want.
"You are the president of Madrid and it is not true that I have said to the board of directors that they must oppose you."
Indeed, Perez went further: "I will help you convince them of your decisions if you want me to."
Martin wants to bring Camacho back to the club as sports director, while Del Bosque would take charge of the club's junior setup.

Thursday's Training Session
Casillas Only Player Missing
23-03-2006
Not even ten hours after returning from Zaragoza, Real Madrid held their first of three training sessions prior to this weekend's Deportivo clash. The only player missing was Casillas, who's recovering from a blow to his left leg. The starting eleven from last night's match at La Romareda did some recovery exercises while the rest of the squad fine tuned their aim and scrimmaged. Raúl Bravo was the only player to train in solitary while Pablo García rejoined his teammates.
Following protocol from prior training sessions, the team was divided into two groups: Wednesday's starting eleven trained at a slower rhythm compared to those who did not play, those who played in the second half, and youth team members Casilla, Robles, Duque and Barral. However, the whole squad was together for López Caro's pre-training chat and the 15 minutes of piggy-in-the-middle drills.
It was only then that the starters looked to Juanjo Maqueda for instruction. They took part in some light running drills to midfield and back with slight pauses in between. The eleven really left all they had on the pitch in Zaragoza and López Caro didn't want to burn the candle at both ends. After stretching for 40 minutes, they made their way to the showers, except for Ronaldo, Cicinho, Baptista and Roberto Carlos, who stayed on the pitch to take shots on goal.
It was a different story for the rest of the squad, with Pablo García and Woodgate fully reintegrated into the group. Pau Alberti had prepared an obstacle course of hurdles, cones, and slalom poles. The drill didn't take very long but it was performed at a fast pace. From there, the session moved to it's next phase, shooting on goal. Starting from the center of the pitch either alone, with support, or from the wing, they all tested their aim by taking shots on goal that was defended by Diego López or Casilla. The team hasn't been able to find the back of the net in recent games and López Caro has been trying to fix the problem with these types of drills.
Casillas was the Only Player Missing
Real Madrid's starting goalkeeper received a hard blow to his left leg in the final minutes of Sunday's match while jumping against several Zaragoza players. He was able to finish the match, but several hours later the wounded area was inflamed. Therefore, he decided to have the physiotherapists take a look at his leg today and in all likelihood will be ready for the next League match.
Raúl Bravo is still recovering from a muscle injury and was seen training with recuperation expert José Luis San Martín. He was instructed to do specific exercises as well as sprint along the diagonals of the pitch. It looks like he's on the final stretch of his solitary work and should be joining his teammates in no time.
The session concluded with a scrimmage on just one half of the pitch. Diego López, Pavón, Robles, Diogo, Pablo García, Guti, and Raúl wore red bibs while Casilla, Woodgate, Helguera, Duque, Cassano, Zidane and Barral donned yellow ones. The match conisted of two 15 minute halves and both sides were able to score goals. With their sights set on Deportivo de la Coruña, it was a job well done. The team will return to training on Friday at 11 am CET and they will all be working at the same rhythm.

Real Madrid pursuit splits family of Arsenal's Cesc
March 24, 2006
Real Madrid's pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is causing family problems for the teenager.
Sources close to the Fabregas' have told DiarioSport Cesc's mother would be happy if her son was to return to Spain and play for Real Madrid if it meant bettering himself.
However, Cesc's Dad is dead against his son turning out for Real after putting him through Barcelona academies before his move to Arsenal.
Friends of the family have been in touch with the Gunners star pleading with him to forget about Real Madrid, while his agent also favours him staying in London rather than risking his career with a shaky Real Madrid.

Real Madrid sound out Chelsea, Arsenal about Beckham bid
March 24, 2006
Arsenal and Chelsea are back in the mix for Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham.
Real's representative agent, Enzo Bronzetti, was in London yesterday with Spanish speculation suggesting he was sounding out Chelsea about their interest in the England captain.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has already admitted his interest in Becks this month, while Tottenham are also being mentioned as potential suitors.
Despite manager Jose Mourinho's opposition to the midfielder's arrival, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is backing chief executive Peter Kenyon's interest in Beckham, who would guarantee a massive marketing windfall for the club.
Mourinho has lost some influence with Abramovich since Chelsea's elimination from the Champions League.
Real president Fernando Martin insists Beckham is not for sale. However, Bronzetti's presence in London suggests they're ready to at least listen to what clubs are willing to put on the table for the ex-Manchester United star.

Benfica: Roberto Carlos Gives Encarnados Barcelona Tips
Real Madrid veteran Roberto Carlos has given Benfica some handy hints that’ll help the Portuguese Encarnados make headlines with yet another upset after they offed both Manchester United and Liverpool against the prevailing tide of public – and expert –opinion.
Photo
According to a recent interview published in Portuguese sports daily 'A Bola', the Brazilian number 6 sees the first leg game in Portugal as fundamental.
“It’s not going to be easy. Benfica will have to keep a clean sheet at Luz, winning by, perhaps, one or two nil. Any other result will make the Camp Nou game really difficult”.
"If Benfica have got this far, eliminating teams like Manchester United and Liverpool on the way, it’s because they’ve earned it. Barcelona have players like Ronaldinho, Eto’o and Deco, that can seal a match at any moment, but Benfica also counts on quality players".
The Merengue also had a word of advice for his counterpart in the Benfica left-back slot, ex-Santos player Leonardo Lourenzo 'Léo'. “He needs to get Giuly running after him because that’s the best way to neutralise him so that if he attacks he’ll be easier to tackle because he’d have used up most of his energy chasing Léo.”

Real to stick with Lopez Caro
24 Mar 2006
Real Madrid have confirmed that Juan Ramon Lopez Caro will continue as first-team coach until the end of the season.
Lopez Caro took temporary charge of first-team affairs when Wanderley Luxemburgo was sacked back in December.
The former youth team coach has had mixed fortunes since taking the reins and Real president Fernando Martin recently stated he expected Real to have secured their new manager inside the next couple of weeks prompting talk Lopez Caro could be moved on.
However, Martin has now confirmed he will remain in place until the end of the current campaign regardless of results.
"He (Lopez Caro) will continue as coach of Real Madrid until the end of the season whatever happens."
A host of names have been linked with the Real hot-seat including Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello, Rafa Benitez, Sven Goran Eriksson and Vicente del Bosque, but reports in the Portuguese press on Friday suggested that Ronald Koeman and Luiz Felipe Scolari were also under consideration.

Inter Milan banking on Victoria to win Beckham race
March 24, 2006
Inter Milan are ready to join the race for Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham.
Real president Fernando Martin has sent the club's agent, Enzo Bronzetti, out to test the market over interest in the England captain.
Inter intermediaries have already been in touch with Bronzetti and the club's patron, Massimo Moratti, knows a £10 million offer would be enough to land Beckham this summer.
Real are seeking closer to £15 million, however Bronzetti has indicated the Spanish giants can be talked down.
While a return to the Premiership is being touted, Moratti knows Beckham's better half, Victoria, would love to move the family to Milan.

Lopez Caro still hoping he can hang on to Real job
Mar 25 2006
MADRID, March 25 (Reuters) - Real Madrid coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro is still hoping he can persuade club president Fernando Martin to let him keep his job next season.
"I am capable of doing this job and I will prove it in the future," Lopez Caro told Spanish sports daily AS on Saturday. "I have no doubt about that.
"I still haven't given up hope that I can continue coaching Real Madrid. That's my dream."
Martin, who has said that Lopez Caro will remain in charge until the end of the season, added recently that he had decided on the next coach but would not reveal his identity.
Lopez Caro took charge in December last year following the sacking of Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
He made a promising enough start but the team then lost form and were eliminated from both the King's Cup and the Champions League.
In the league they trail arch-rivals Barcelona by 13 points in third place with nine games left..
Leading suggested candidates for the post of Real coach such as Arsenal's Arsene Wenger, Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, Fabio Capello of Juventus and AC Milan's Carlo Ancelotti have all distanced themselves from the job in recent weeks.
The Spanish media, however, insist that despite his recent contract extension with Milan, Ancelotti remains the favourite to take charge.
Sports daily AS said on Saturday that Real would announce Ancelotti's appointment after next month's Italian general elections and when Milan finish their Champions League campaign.

Real Madrid facing compo dilemma for players
March 26, 2006
Real Madrid president Fernando Martin faces a massive compensation bill if he is to overhaul the squad in the summer.
DiarioSport says none of the senior players earmarked for sale will ask for transfers in the summer and will only budge if Real agree to contract pay-outs.
Ronaldo, Robert Carlos, Zinedine Zidane, Thomas Gravesen, Ivan Helguera and Raul are all being touted around Europe by agents - but none will leave unless Real cover part of their remaining contracts.
This is sure to affect Martin's summer transfer budget and the club's chances of attracting a quality coach for next season.

March 27, 2006
Real Madrid coach Juan Roman Lopez Caro was happy to take the credit for Ronaldo's performance in yesterday's 4-0 thrashing of Deportivo La Coruna.

"And I can say that was both my and Ronaldo's intention. Now I'm excited and hope we will see his best for the final rounds of the season."

"What I am going to say ... I do not want to emphasize individual aspects," said Lopez Caro afterwards. "I will do so behind closed doors, in the dressing room.

Adriano swap back on for Real Madrid's Ronaldo
March 27, 2006
A swap involving Inter Milan striker Adriano and Real Madrid's Ronaldo is again gathering pace.
Adriano's substitution in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Parma and his show of protest towards coach Roberto Mancini has fueled speculation in Italy that club patron Massimo Moratti is pushing for a swap to bring Ronaldo back to the club in exchange.
Adriano was the first to leave training at Inter's Apiano Gentile HQ yesterday and his behaviour has left Moratti unimpressed.
But Inter may've left their bid too late as in the last fortnight Real president Fernando Martin has held a series of meetings with Ronaldo to assure him of his future at the Madrid giants beyond this season.

Valdano Undergoes Surgery
Overcomes Punctured Lung and in Satisfactory Condition
Jorge Valdano was involved in a helicopter accident in Mexico on Saturday. According to press agency Agencia EFE, he underwent surgery to repair a punctured lung and is now recovering in his hospital room.
On Sunday, ABC hospital in Mexico City reported that former Real Madrid player and coach, Jorge Valdano is recovering satisfactorily after undergoing surgery to drain a punctured lung suffered in Saturday's helicopter accident. The hospital reported that Valdano's punctured lung had to be "surgically repaired" in order to drain all the blood it had accumulated. He is in "satisfactory condition but will remain hospitalized and under observation for several days" to avoid any complications, explained the hospital. The medical report stated that Valdano "had broken his first and eighth rib and suffered a punctured lung, allowing blood and air to escape through the thoracic cavity."
"There is no more blood remaining in his lung and he is in satisfactory condition. He's in a good mood and would like to send his regards to all his friends here in Mexico. He is also very appreciative for all the attention he has received. His prognosis is very satisfactory," stated the hospital.
It is unknown how many days the former player will remain hospitalized, although, depending on his recuperation, the medical staff hopes he can be released as soon as next weekend. The helicopter accident occurred on Saturday morning in a residential neighbourhood of Mexico City. The eight passengers were hurt and one passed away hours later due to complications.

Ronaldo, Second Most Effective
Goals Every 136 minutes and 1.5 matches
Ronaldo has returned the only way he knows how: by scoring goals and being cheered by Bernabéu fans out their seats, flabergasted with his incredible play. The Brazilian has scored in each of the last two matches he has started in and has become the second most effective attacker in the League. Ronie has stepped up to the challenge and Madrid has cut two points of their next rival's lead.
Although they have always been debated, Ronaldo's goal-scoring records speak for themselves. It's no wonder he is still considered the best attacker in the world, in both quality and effectiveness. Although this could be Ronaldo's worst year since arriving to Real Madrid, his numbers are still convincing. Since regaining his position in the starting eleven, the Brazilian has scored in both matches played.
Ronie wasn't in the lineup against Atlético de Madrid, Valencia or Betis. He regained his starting position against Zaragoza and clinched one point for the Whites in the very last minute. On Sunday against Deportivo, Ronaldo was again on the Bernabéu pitch from the initial whistle and he not only gave his team a 2-0 lead, but he can lay claim to the best play of the match.
A beautiful series of feints left him alone in front of Deportivo keeper Molina, and we were reminded of the very best version of the explosive football player capable of changing the course of a match in a matter of seconds.
Second Most Decisive Goal Scorer in the League
Ronaldo has scored 12 goals in League play and is fifth in the top goalscorer table, but in effectiveness, the Brazilian shoots to the top of the tables into the second spot. The statistics are conclusive: Spread over the 1,640 minutes he has played this season, Ronaldo's twelve goals translate into one goal every 136 minutes, the equivalent of scoring every 1.5 matches.
These statistics are even more compellin when you compare Ronaldo's numbers to those of the other players that comprise the top goalscorer

Spain's Referees Call Strike This Weekend
The Spanish league programme could be brought to a halt this weekend if referees carry out their promise to go on strike unless they are given back-pay before Friday.
Photo
Barcelona's game against Real Madrid at Camp Nou would be the most high profile casualty of any action if all the officials from first and second division refuse to work as they announced on Monday.
A letter from the Technical Referees' Committee (CTA) was sent to the Spanish Football Federation announced that a strike would take and that has now been forwarded to the Spanish Football League (LFP).
"If they do not pay, then they will not officiate. They have decided that unanimously and it is their decision away from the technical committee," a source from the RFEF told Spanish news agency EFE.
The decision is a culmination of disagreements between the RFEF and the LFP over who should pay the matchday officials and the arguments have increased as the power struggle continued.
Meetings have so far failed to produce a break through with both sides making statements that claim they have paid their share, but have also with held some of the monies due to outstanding debts.
The referees claim that they have not been paid since November and are demanding that they receive the money before Friday, March 31, in order to avoid a strike that would see all games in La Primera and La Segunda A on April 1 and 2 called off.
There is also a dispute about how much the officials are owed in publicity rights as they state that they have not been paid for the second half of last season for wearing sponsorship on their shirts.

Ronaldo won't commit to Real Madrid

Ronaldo also reopened his row with the Santiago Bernabeu crowd - and club captain Raul in the Sao Paulo interview.
"The fans should not boo you, even when things aren't going well, when there's a chance of winning the game.
"It's not the first time I've asked for their support. When I won the Ballon d'Or, the following game they just wanted to cheer Raul."

Beckham Gives a Fright
Injured Ankle is the Only Setback of the First Training Session
After a day off granted by boss Juan Ramón López Caro, all eyes at Valdebebas were on David Beckham. At the midway point of the workout, the English international grabbed his right ankle and had to abandon the session. His ankle has been niggling him since the Deportivo match but he hopes to be fully recovered for Saturday's match in Barcelona. With Woodgate still out, the rest of the group trained for nearly two hours.
The week began with 60 minutes of gym work. Over the next few days, the coaching staff will recharge the team's batteries to be in the best conditions possible when they take on Barcelona this Saturday. After reviewing video from last week's match against Deportivo, the players made their way to the gymnasium where they completed the first stage of today's session by using the warmup room and machines. The objective: to strengthen the upper body with various specific exercises. Youth team player David Barral participated with the first team.
Beckham Abandons
The squad took the pitch without Jonathan Woodgate, still suffering from physical problems. David Beckham trained with absolute normality until the 20th minute of the pressuring drill that initiated the tactical stage of the session.
After grimacing, the English star grabbed his right ankle and immediately called the physiotherapist, Daniel Martínez. He was looked at on the pitch and then decided to abandon the workout. This setback was provoked by a blow suffered on Sunday that was tweaked again just after stepping onto the grass. His status is questionable until given the thumbs up by the medical staff. No one substituted him in the workout as the starting eleven soon made their way to the dressing room.
Nearly Two Hours
With the added load of gym work, the coaching staff had prepared ahighly demanding session for the players. Divided into two teams on the pitch, they played a match based on ball possession and creating open spaces. López Caro demanded high intensity and full concentration.
ORANGE TEAM: Salgado, Sergio Ramos, Diogo, Mejíam, Guti, Beckham, Helguera, Ronaldo, Cassano and Robinho.
YELLOW TEAM: Roberto Carlos, Raúl Bravo, Pavón, Pablo García, Gravesen, Raúl, Zidane, Cicinho, Baptista and Barral.
Without Sunday's starters, and Roberto Carlos, Cicinho, Robinho, Baptista and Ronaldo perfecting their shots from outside the box, the rest of the squad scrimmaged, this time with the goalkeepers, who had work on flexibility and reaction time for 30 minutes.
ORANGE TEAM: Helguera, Mejía, Gravesen, Cassano and Barral.
GREEN TEAM: Salgado, Pablo García, Diogo, Pavón and Raúl.
This exercise finalized the nearly two hours of training at Valdebebas. Three workout sessions remain, two being behind closed doors, in preparation for the clash at the Camp Nou. With no suspended players, López Caro will be regularly informed about Woodgate and Beckham's recovery.

Beckham backs Eriksson for Real Madrid
March 29, 2006
England captain David Beckham has backed Real Madrid's push for Sven Goran Eriksson.
Real midfielder Becks, 30, is convinced his England coach will be a massive hit as Bernabeu boss next season.
He said: "Sven is one of the best managers around and his name was bound to come into the equation. I think he would work well."
Real president Fernando Martin confirmed Eriksson is on his hit-list of seven world-renowned coaches.
And Beckham reckons Eriksson is the "obvious choice" as he will be available after this summer's World Cup.
Becks added: "I don't know who it will be as it's not my decision. Sven is the obvious one because he will be out of a job. He will be free and available so we will see.
"I don't think he would have a problem with any place he went to. I think he is an experienced manager and can handle it.
"He has been the English manager for five years and has handled the pressures there so I'm sure he can handle it wherever he manages.
"One of his biggest qualities is his man- management - the way he treats the players and what he gets out of the players.
"He gives the players a lot of respect."
Beckham insists Real's new man must be guaranteed a long stint in charge after six different managers in three years.
He added: "I just want us to keep a manager for the rest of the time I'm here.
"The club needs stability and, when you have that, you get performances and start winning trophies. We need to find a manager and keep a manager."

Beckham Finalizes his Return
Will Rejoin the Squad on Thursday
The English midfielder took precaution and didn't train with the rest of his teammates today. Rather, he decided to focus on fully recovering from the deep bruise on his right ankle. He spent 45 minutes on the pitch doing specific exercises to speed up the recovery process. Beckham intends to rejoin the squad tomorrow, Thursday.
David Beckham wasn't able to complete yesterday's training session due to a mild ankle injury suffered in Sunday's match against Deportivo de la Coruña. The medical staff diagnosed the injury as deep right ankle bruise. The English international didn't want to force his return and, therefore, took part in running drills with physical trainer José Luis San Martín. He didn't appear to have any difficulty completing all the exercises and didn't show any signs of pain. Beckham should rejoin the squad on Thursday barring any last minute setbacks.
The English star had an intense 45 minutes workout to strengthen the injured area. He ran series after series between slalom poles to maintain his physical form, while at the same time testing out his ankle to make sure it will be at 100% for Saturday's clash against Barcelona.
“He didn't train with the rest of the group for precautionary reasons and he didn't show any signs of discomfort,” assured physical trainer José Luis San Martín.
Boss Juan Ramón López Caro has had Beckham in the starting line up recently and should be able to this weekend, should he see fit. Two more training sessions are scheduled before traveling to Barcelona; two days Beckham will use to be in perfect form for this weekend.

Valdano Still in ICU
Undergoes Second Surgery
Former Argentine football player Jorge Valdano underwent surgery yesterday that would help drain blood that had accumulated between his ribs and lung. The small incision proved to be successful and a fully conscious Jorge Valdano remains under observation in the Intensive Care Unit, eagerly anticipating being moved to another floor.
After recovering satisfactorily from surgery the day of the helicopter accident, Jorge Valdano had to have another small operation in order to drain blood accumulated between his ribs and lung. Initially, it appeared that the former football player fractured eight ribs, but the total is now eleven. All of them are in close proximity to the spinal column, proving to be quite a nuissance and discomfort.
More importantly, and what the Hospital ABC doctors are hoping for, is that the wound doesn't become infected, which would allow for a faster recovery. Valdano has been hospitalized since Saturday.
The former Real Madrid player and coach must remain completely still and cannot move, but he was able to explain to his friends and relatives just exactly what happened. Apparently, the helicopter never reached flying altitude and crashed to the ground after trying to take off from the top of a building.
Valdano's wife, mother, and Spanish journalist Santiago Segurola have kept him company around the clock. They have been overwhelmed by the number of members of the press who knock on their door and they are very grateful to everyone who has kept Jorge Valdano in their thoughts and prayers.

Inter Milan's Figo slams Real Madrid "circus"
March 30, 2006
Inter Milan wing ace Luis Figo has slammed former club Real Madrid.
"If your plan is to build a circus, then you have less chance of winning trophies," he told Marca. "Things deteriorated after the first three years, when commercial and promotional interests overtook the sporting considerations. These are mistakes that you pay for sooner or later."
Figo was the original Galactico when Florentino Perez swept into the Presidency on the back of a pledge to sign the Barcelona man for a record £37m.
The Portuguese legend analyses what has gone wrong with a Madrid side that is out of the Champions League at the second round, blaming the summer friendly tours of advertiser-friendly Asian nations.
"It's nice to go round the world and be treated like Kings, but it's a strange situation. Ask the fans if they'd prefer their team to win games or turn into the Globetrotters."
Perez has now resigned and handed over the reins to new President Fernando Martin, who has announced a clampdown on diva behaviour within the squad.
"I was surprised by the timing of the Perez resignation, as when things are going wrong is the time to stick it out. It wasn't the right time to quit."

March 30, 2006

Beckham's contract talks had stalled due to Florentino Perez's resignation, but those close to the England captain's camp say negotiations have been picked up again in positive fashion.

Raul: I won't leave Real Madrid
March 31, 2006
Raul has dismissed reports he will be sold by Real Madrid at the end of the season.
The Real captain's struggles over the last 12 months has led to speculation the club's new hierarchy will seek to cut it's ties with the striker.
But Raul said: "I am going to finish my career in Madrid. I have a contract until 2010 and whether I am a starter or substitute I will continue here because I feel good.
"I'm working harder now than ever before, because I am a year older and it is necessary to work more. If I train well, then I play well ... and then everything else falls into place."
