I haven't seen the old one so I can't compare, but I like the one being used now.
My only suggestion: the titles of the sections (Welcome, News, Multimedia, etc) should be a larger font. I was starting topics in the wrong section because I didn't notice that another one already existed... The titles should be more prominent. :)
Other than that, very nice, very clean and simple. Maybe if the members want a change, the banner can be redone from time to time.
