European league roundup-No stopping Real Madrid in Liga

Leaders Real Madrid made it three wins from three in Spain, AS Roma set the pace in Serie A and Arsenal went top of the Premier League for the first time in three years at the weekend.

Bayern Munich, top of the Bundesliga, had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Schalke 04, while French champions Olympique Lyon moved up to second with their fourth win in a row.

SPAIN

Argentina striker Javier Saviola and Dutchman Wesley Sneijder set champions Real on their way to a laboured 3-1 victory over 10-man Almeria on Saturday.

Barcelona are fifth on five points after they could only manage a 0-0 draw at Osasuna on Sunday. The three clubs in between the two Spanish heavyweights -- Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal -- all have six points.

UEFA Cup holders Sevilla crushed regional rivals Recreativo Huelva 4-1 but a toothless Valencia were booed off the pitch despite beating promoted Valladolid 2-1.

Villarreal, who were given a 5-0 mauling by Real Madrid two weeks ago, were 1-0 winners at Real Mallorca.

ENGLAND

Arsenal went top of the Premier League for the first time since October 2004 when they came from behind to beat arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in an outstanding north London derby at White Hart Lane.

Spurs took the lead with a Gareth Bale free-kick in the 15th minute but Arsenal replied with second-half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor, who scored twice, and Cesc Fabregas.

Manchester City moved up to second place on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa, teenager Michael Johnson scoring the goal. They are a point behind Arsenal having played a game more.

Liverpool slipped from first to third after a 0-0 draw at Portsmouth, where goalkeeper Pepe Reina saved a penalty from Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu.

Champions Manchester United won 1-0 at Everton, Nemanja Vidic scoring with a late header, while Chelsea were held to a 0-0 home draw by Blackburn Rovers after what looked a valid goal from Ivorian striker Salomon Kalou was ruled offside.

Liverpool, United and Chelsea are two points off the lead.

ITALY

AS Roma went two points clear at the top of Serie A after Juan and Francesco Totti scored in a 2-0 victory at Reggina, their third win out of three this season.

Juventus, who had won their last two league games, lost 1-0 at home to Udinese with striker Antonio Di Natale nodding in after halftime to add to the double he got for Italy in midweek.

Injury-hit champions Inter Milan moved up to second after grinding out a 2-0 home win over Catania thanks to decisive finishes from Hernan Crespo and Cesar.

AC Milan, who begin their Champions League defence at home to Benfica on Tuesday, needed an injury-time strike from defender Alessandro Nesta to draw 1-1 at Siena on Saturday.

GERMANY

The Bundesliga was left bunched at the top as Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Schalke 04 on Saturday.

Schalke's Ivan Rakitic beat Oliver Kahn with a low shot in the 36th minute and it needed a Miroslav Klose header nine minutes after the break to preserve Bayern's unbeaten start.

Werder Bremen suffered a shock 3-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on Friday -- terrible preparation for Tuesday's Champions League game against Real Madrid -- but there were signs of improvement from VfB Stuttgart, the champions winning 3-0 at home to Energie Cottbus.

With five games played Bayern are a point ahead of Arminia Bielefeld, 4-2 winners over visitors Hansa Rostock, and Eintracht, who beat Hamburg 2-1 in Frankfurt.

FRANCE

A Karim Benzema hat-trick gave Olympique Lyon a 5-1 win at Metz on Saturday as the six times French champions clinched a fourth Ligue 1 victory in a row to move into second place.

Lyon, who travel to Barcelona in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, have 15 points from seven matches.

Alain Perrin's side trail leaders Nancy by a point after the Lorraine side slumped to a 1-0 defeat at RC Lens.

Olympique Marseille prepared in the worst possible way for Tuesday's Champions League match at home to Besiktas when they lost 2-1 against Toulouse at the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille have yet to win at home this season.

Stade Rennes rose to fourth on Sunday after an Etienne Didot free kick secured a 1-0 win at Lorient in the Breton derby.

NETHERLANDS

Two goals from Canadian Jonathan de Guzman steered Feyenoord to a 3-1 win at Roda JC Kerkrade and top spot on Sunday.

Feyenoord have a maximum 12 points, two points above Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven who had 1-0 wins on Saturday at Heracles Almelo and at home to Vitesse Arnhem respectively

Eastern European round-up
Round-up of the weekend soccer action in eastern Europe:

POLAND

Legia Warsaw stretched their perfect start to seven matches with a 3-1 home win over second bottom Widzew Lodz, the leaders moving four points clear of closest rivals Wisla Krakow, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Odra Wodzislaw Slask.

Long range efforts by Takesure Chinyama and Edson da Silva gave Wisla the win after Piotr Kuklis had cancelled out Aleksandar Vukovic's opener for the home side.

Marek Zienczuk fired Wisla ahead in the first half and salvaged a point for the winners of three league titles in the last five years after Odra had turned the match through Jakub Grzegorzewski and Marcin Malinowski.

Champions Zaglebie Lubin fell 10 points behind the leaders after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Ruch Chorzow.

UKRAINE

Leaders Shakhtar Donetsk laboured to a 2-1 win at Chernomorets Odessa to stay three points ahead of Dnipro Dnipropterovsk, who strolled to a 3-0 home victory against Metalist Kharkiv.

A Cristiano Lucarelli penalty and Dmytro Chygrynsky's header gave Shakhtar a 2-0 lead before Oleh Venglinsky set up a dramatic finish with a fine solo effort.

Dnipro took the lead with a Vitaliy Bordiyan own-goal before midfielders Sergiy Nazarenko and Dmytro Lyopa saw the visitors off with second-half strikes.

A 90th-minute goal from midfielder Taras Mikhalik handed champions Dynamo Kiev a 2-1 win at Metalurg Donetsk to keep them in third position, seven points behind Shakhtar.

HUNGARY

Two goals in two minutes gave front-runners Honved a 2-1 win at lowly Siofok to keep them three points clear of champions Debrecen and Fehervar, who both won to maintain the pressure.

Substitutes Norbert Palasthy and Dieng Cheikh Abass struck for Honved midway through the second half after Szabolcs Kanta had fired the hosts ahead.

Goals from Adam Komlosi and Zsombor Kerekes either side of halftime gave Debrecen a 2-0 home win over Vasas Budapest and Fehervar brushed aside Sopron by the same score.

CROATIA

Champions Dinamo Zagreb showed no sign of slowing down after a Bosko Balaban brace and a goal each by Luka Modric and Nikola Pokrivac helped them to a 4-0 win over Slaven Belupo Koprivnica, their eighth victory in as many matches.

Dinamo stayed seven points clear of closest rivals Zadar, who edged NK Zagreb 1-0 courtesy of a Jakov Surac scorcher.

Third-placed Rijeka slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Sibenik, their first loss of the season, thanks to a Frano Vitaic hat-trick.

Dinamo's traditional rivals Hajduk Split stayed fourth, eight points adrift of the leaders, after a 3-1 home win over bottom team Varteks Varazdin.

SERBIA

Partizan Belgrade cruised to a 3-1 win over promoted Napredak Krusevac to extend their lead to seven points after champions and city rivals Red Star continued their unimpressive start with a 0-0 draw at Borac Cacak.

Serbia midfielder Zoran Tosic opened the scoring in the first minute, Senegalese striker Lamine Diarra made it 2-0 shortly afterwards and Djordje Lazic steered in the third to keep Partizan firmly in the driving seat.

Red Star, who have a game in hand, needed a desperate save from keeper Ivan Randjelovic in stoppage time to avoid their first league defeat after another lacklustre performance.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Slavia Prague had their league lead reduced to one point following a 0-0 home draw with third-placed Banik Ostrava, as Teplice moved into second with a 2-1 win over champions Sparta Prague.

Petr Lukas headed Teplice into a 36th minute lead and Czech Under-21 striker Martin Fenin scrambled home a 67th minute winner after Miroslav Slepicka had drawn level for Sparta.

Slovan Liberec, the 2006 champions, remained rooted to the foot of the table with only two points from six games after a 1-1 draw at Viktoria Zizkov.

SLOVAKIA

Surprise package Nitra went three points clear at the top with a 3-0 rout of Ruzomberok after champions Zilina suffered a 4-1 drubbing at fourth-placed Spartak Trnava.

Karol Karlik sent Nitra on their way shortly before the break while Peter Grajciar and Andrej Hesek sealed the win.

Artmedia Bratsilava leapt over Zilina into second position on goal difference after a 3-2 success over bottom side Senec.

BULGARIA

CSKA Sofia won 1-0 at Pirin Blagoevgrad to leapfrog their opposition at the top of the table, thanks to a superb finish from Panama striker Jose Luis Garces, who came on as a second half substitute.

CSKA lead with 13 points from five matches ahead of Pirin on 12 and Lokomotiv Sofia, who have 11 after midfielder Kaloyan Karadjinov scored all four goals in a 4-0 drubbing of mid-table Chernomorets Burgas.

Champions Levski Sofia are three points off the pace after being held to a 0-0 draw at struggling Belasitsa Petrich.

ROMANIA

CFR Cluj went top on 17 points from five matches after two goals from Argentine striker Cristian Fabbiani gave them a 2-0 win at Farul Constanta.

Second-placed Rapid Bucharest are two points behind the leaders following a 0-0 draw at Steaua Bucharest while Vaslui, who are a further point adrift, slipped from first to third after a 2-1 defeat at Politehnica Timisoara.

Champions Dinamo Bucharest bounced back from a string of poor results after an Ionel Danciulescu hat-trick in the space of only 12 minutes helped them to a 5-2 win at Politehnica Iasi.
