Guti absent
Ramos rejoins the squad; Van Nistelrooy, Emerson, and Gago work on the side
The second session of the week has seen Sergio Ramos rejoin group work. Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy, Emerson, and Gago, worked on putting the finishing touches to their respective recoveries with physical coach José Luis San Martín. The rest of the squad completed another intense session of physical work in preparation for the antepenultimate final against Deportivo Coruña. The team's outstanding physical shape at this late point in the season is definitely one of the keys to success: Real Madrid are in the lead and only depend on themselves to raise the Primera Liga trophy.
Iker Casillas said during his press conference yesterday: “You have seen how we've climbed from fourth to second position… and now we're first, but we've always worked real hard.” In line with these words, Capello's team will continue their intensive physical work plan throughout the week to ensure that they stay in top shape for the final stretch of the domestic championship. With three finals left, the first will be played at home on Saturday at 20:00 CET opposite Deportivo Coruña. Yesterday's toning session gave way to today's utterly physical practice. It was time to work up a sweat at Valdebebas' Training Ground 1 with physical circuits including cones, poles, hurdles, ropes, etc. Before that, however, the Madridista players made their way to the turf for a warmup directed by Massimo Neri under a heavy downpour.
Once again, the joking department was left up to the Brazilians, their favourite target being the Englishman David Beckham. The maintenance practice game was a perfect wrap, with Capello insisting on not letting any of their players lose concentration.
Yesterday saw the absences of Ramos, Van Nistelrooy and Gago, who preferred to stay indoors to recover from the niggles they picked up in the Huelva match. Today, it was the turn of vice-Captain José Mª Gutiérrez, Guti, with a sore throat. The number '14' opted for intramural work alongside Antonio Cassano, who is slowly recovering from the arthritis of his right ankle. The good news was the return to group discipline of the Sevillian Sergio Ramos. The polyvalent defender, with his commitment and attiude, is setting the tone for the rest.
Van Nistelrooy and Gago will be foreseeably rejoining the squad tomorrow. Meanwhile, today they were outside working on their own with physical trainer José Luis San Martín. Brazilian holding midfielder Emerson, who trained at the same pace than the Dutchman and the Argentine, is working hard to shake off the hamstring injury which already saw him miss the Huelva fixture.
Finally, stoppers Iker Casillas, Diego López, and Antonio Adán did their very own physical session with Italian goalkeeper coach Franco Tancredi.
