1997
September: Member of the Spanish team that reached the FIFA U-17 World Championship semifinals in Egypt.
his debut:
- Casillas was part of a Spanish squad that took gold at the FIFA World Youth Championship Nigeria 1999, although he was not the first-choice goalkeeper.
- Casillas made his debut for the senior side on 3 June 2000 in a friendly match prior to UEFA Euro 2000, although he would remain second in line behind Valencia’s Santiago Canizares at the finals.
Iker Casillas's career might never have been the same had it not been for an untimely injury to a team mate at Real Madrid and a bizarre incident involving a bottle of aftershave.obviously others bad luck bring iker good luck:
1-after a fast-track promotion to the Real first team, the young keeper's career had appeared to stall after he lost his place in the starting lineup.
But all that changed when first choice keeper Cesar picked up an injury in the Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen as his team fought off attacks from the German side.
2-Despite his lack of match practice he was included in the squad for the 2002 World Cup, although he was to play second fiddle to the undisputed first-choice Santiago Canizares.
But the Valencia keeper somehow severed a tendon in his big toe after dropping an aftershave bottle on his foot at the team's training base in Jerez.
Once again Casillas stepped into the breach and Spain's number one jersey has been his ever since.
