Title: Ancient Runes Lore

Sabrael Dagrun - October 12, 2006 12:43 AM (GMT)
(A note. As with all of our lore, please do not steal this without asking. I have worked very hard on this and I know it is a very rare bit of lore to find easily. However, if you really want to use it, just email at keithit@yahoo.com and i will more than likely say its cool)

Section One - The Elder Futhark

The elder Futhark is the basic rune language. All divining comes from this set of 24 runes, which are divided into three families called “Aetts.” Each Aett is related to a Norse god and that helps to explain the content of the Aett. The first is Freyr/Frey’s Aett, then Heimdall’s Aett, finally Tyr’s Aett. More on those further down.

MERKSTAVE - Important note but simple one as well. If the rune lands upside down or lands on top of another, it is Merkstave, an alternate, USUALLY opposite meaning. The merkstave definition will be with the normal one here.

FREY’s AETT - This set is based on nurturing, farming, merchants, etc. Each of the runes shows a specific thing to a talented caster.

RUNECASTING LAYOUTS (For use with the Elder Futhark)

The Norn Layout

Simple. Draw three random runes and place them face up. The first is the past, the second is the present or near future, the third is the future.

Nine Rune Layout

Select Nine Runes from your bag randomly. Cast them onto a surface. Read whichever ones land face up and draw what you will from them.

Casting on the Ground

Cast all 24 runes and repeat the procedure from the Nine Rune layout.

Five Rune Layout

Pick five runes at random and place them in a “Plus sign” upside down. One by one, flip them over. The west point is your past, the center your present, and the east point is your future. The north point represents the help or lack thereof you can expect in the problem and the south represents the things about the problem that will trouble you.

These are basically the only ones that you will be using, though there are many many more.

POWER RUNES

This is where we get to the fun stuff. These are runes that can duplicate certain spells, or even effects not associated with spells. These are one use runes. Permanent runes are even harder, the practice of which will barely be touched in your seventh year. Finally, tattoos are next to impossible to get. There are maybe a half dozen people in the world who can do them, and most of them require a VERY big favor, even if you know who they are. That being said, lets dive in.

(click on name to see a picture)

Aegishjalmur - Aegishjalmur is known as the Helm of Awe. It is supposed to provide protection battle. For our purposes, it provides a Shield Charm without a wand. Note, a wand must be present at creation.

Vegvisir - Vegvisir is the runic compass. It means “direction sign” or “see the way”. It prevents you from getting lost and can be called upon to point you in the direction of north.

Valknot - This is the Death Knot. Do Not Get This. You will not be taught how to do it in Hogwarts and for good reason. Anyone who openly bares this symbol will have minor luck over time, but all of the positive turns to negative in one crashing burst. You might win 15 dice rolls in a row, but then the person you are playing with will shoot you. Be warned.

Gapaldur - This provides a bit of protection in hand to hand combat. This by no means makes you invincible, but a punch that might out right knock you out would only daze you.

Ginfaxi - This rune protects its wearer from fear. A very useful one, great to have handy when doing work that makes you nervous or afraid.

Hraethigaldur and Ottastafur - These twin runes must be used together for an effect. Both cause fear in an enemy. Ginfaxi and Hraethigaldur/Ottastafur counteract each other.

Svefnthorn - Sleep thorn. Gives a good night’s sleep if kept under pillow. Also useful for prisoners. If printed onto the flesh it will keep them asleep until the rune is disturbed.

Lásabrjótur - Lásabrjótur is the rune tattooed on Sabrael’s wrist. It is the Lock Breaker and enables you to escape most bindings. This includes handcuffs, rope, straightjackets, chains, and the like. It does not affect locked doors unless drawn in the surface. It does not cure petrification. An interesting note, when using this rune and wearing a wedding ring (but no other type of ring), the ring always falls off, even if much too small and stuck on the finger.

The next group are runes whose name have been forgotten but are still in use. They are rarer but Sabrael still teaches most of them.

(click on the ‘name’ for a picture)

Calm Rune - This rune calms anyone it is sketched on. They become literally incapable of anger as long as the rune remains the whole. This is a powerful binding rune.

Anti Poison Rune - This rune will slow a poison’s progress in a body. It will not eliminate it outright, but will slow it so much that help is much easier to find.

Eternal Love Rune - This rune represents love and friendship. When you create one, you must give it to someone else willingly. The other person than has the power to request one thing of you. Nothing ridiculous or the spell fails. “Get me a soda” works. “Jump off a cliff” does not. Use common sense.

Illusionary Rune - This rune is about hiding. For our purposes, it gives you a Disallusionment Charm without a wand.

Lock Rune - The lock rune binds a door or a binding. It even will cancel a Lásabrjótur rune out. Very useful, but a bit powerful for Sabrael to trust his younger students with.

Love Runes - Of course there are love runes. These act like love potions, each is specialized to cause attraction to the caster only.

Woman to a man

Man to a woman

Woman to a woman

Man to a man

Finally, there are runes without names or pictures. That is because . . . I don’t have pictures. Brief descriptions are given, though most of these are actually traps that can be disarmed with training in Curse Breaking.

Fire Trap - Explodes if touched before disarming.

Levitation Rune - Causes things to float until disturbed.

Alarm Rune - Sets off a high pitched alarm.

Teleportation - Similar to a portkey, sends the person to a predetermined place.

Stor Brann - Great Fire - Same as Brann, size of a basketball.

Stor Vind - Great Wind - Burst of wind, downwards only. Can knock smaller creatures over and slows the progress of larger ones.

Sann Brann - True Wind - Burst of wind, upwards only. Can pull most items out of the hands of their carriers.

Stor Gløder - Great Glow - Produces light equivalent to sunlight. Lasts 1 minute.

Sann Gløder - True Glow - Produces white light, blinding those unwary. Lasts 1 second.

Rune Creation and Activation

The process of creating a rune is simple and yet difficult at the same time. It is time consuming, and a bit tedious, not to mention the experience needed for the process. Runecasting is something that becomes your life, a true master rarely has time for more interests. Exceptions do exist, but again, these are exceptions.

Creation Process

When creating a rune, we must take several things into account. I shall outline these as steps, and note that none of these can be skipped. Without all the parts, the rune will either not work or explode and take some part of your body with it.

Step 1 - Knowledge of the Rune

Your character must know about the Rune in question in order to make it. This can come from several different sources, some common and some are even one of a kind. The most common way that casters learn Runes is from Hog warts (or whatever school you happen to attend). Ancient Runes classes exist in every major institution of education and several multipurpose runes are taught worldwide. Using this method, the student obtains a good general overview of the rune making process as well instruction on how to create several runes. Generally, they also construct their own set of divining runes consisting of the Elder Futhark.

The second method is from books written by runes scholars. Most of these are mass produced and nearly as well known as the school-taught ones. They are available at Flourish and Blott’s or any other bookstore, however separate books on how to actually create the rune might be needed if the crafter does not know how to do so.

The third method is much more rare, but the benefit is much greater (as usually is the case). Through exploration, truly ancient runes can be found. These are usually found in tombs or other ruins, and though the Norwegian culture is the one most often linked to runes, they can be found anywhere magic was practiced.

The fourth method is the most rare, and in this day and age, might be extinct. This method involves such a connection to the Runes that the crafter is able to create a new rune altogether. Theoretically, all spells could be turned into Runes, however the ability to do so has deteriorated over the years as interest in the practice has died off.

Step 2 - Raw Materials

Depending on how you wish to produce the rune, this step might take a matter of minutes or much, much longer. Common mediums include stone and wood, both of which can be carved. A knife is used for wood most commonly with a chisel and hammer for stone. Most rune carvings are limited to these two, but there are other mediums in use, in ancient times and today.

One use runes may be drawn on paper, and once activated the paper curls up and burns to ashes. These are always one use, even runes that would normally be used more than once work only once when drawn. Paper-drawn runes are also subject to destruction by normal means. Water will ruin it, as well ink smudging and fire.

Metal is not used as often anymore, however in ancient times it was very common. During the crafting of a weapon, the smith could carve runes into the metal when it was still malleable. This was a very difficult process and if the caster did not get a perfect result on the first try, it was useless. Many attempted to prepare weapons with runes, but few truly succeeded. The process is still possible today, but the means of doing so are hidden greatly.

The final common medium is human flesh. This comes in two forms, permanent runic tattoos and temporary ones. Permanent runic tattoos are extremely rare and the amount of people on the planet who can make them can be counted on one hand. It is a very dangerous and painful process, one horrible mistake and the person could be permanently disfigured. These results include but are not limited to.

Blindness
Deafness
Massive Scar Tissue All Over Body
Loss of Voice
Loss of Magic
Death.

The second form is temporary and actually quite common. Done with henna ink, the level of difficulty is not nearly as high. However, risks do still exist, namely less extreme versions of the above. The henna ink never dries on skin (due to the magic) and these are one use runes as well. If the ink is smudged, any of the above effects could happen, though if done correctly, it deactivates the rune.

Step 3 - Time and Energy

Runecasting takes an extensive about of time and energy. Some runes require hours of focus to activate. Ensure that you are ready to stay awake the required amount of time and that you are somewhere peaceful to prevent interruptions. An interruption can lead to the ruining of a rune (at best).

Extra Note - Runic difficulty

Anyone who passed their OWL will be able to use the Elder Futhark runes to divine, and be able to translate them.

Anyone who passed their NEWTs will be able to use the ones in the area marked Power Runes. Note that Love Runes are illegal in most countries, and are mainly taught as a precaution for deactivation.

Anything that could be considered a Glyph (aka The Fire Trap Rune or Alarm Rune) would require some experience in Curse Breaking to deactivate, though they can be found by anyone with experience in Runes.

Anything in the Basic Spell Runes section requires separate study. The basic ones (Brann, Vind, Vann, Jord, and Gløder) can be learned in many runic textbooks. The rest are much rarer and require much research to even obtain. It takes a week to learn each rune and you must only be learning one rune at a time.
