Title: To Find The Book Of Choice
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 01:05 AM (GMT)
A black robed Gryffindor approached the doorway of the school library, her left hand toying with the soft blonde locks hanging along the side of her shoulders. The library at Hogwarts was large and grand in the oppinion of the tiny first year who passed counter and table to seek out the perfect book for a late night's reading. Books were stocked high on towering bookshelves, and decorative paintings were hung in the corners of the library.
Samantha passed the paintings without a second thought, both her mind and eyes focussed on the bookshelves that lay scattered in different areas of the library. At last she was able to find a section in the library that suited her taste; an adequately-sized section that contained information and even one or two novels on the different mystical creatures of the magical world.
"Perfect," she muttered to herself, her hand dropping the lock of hair it had been absent-mindingly playing with and reaching out to browse through some of the books before her.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 01:11 AM (GMT)
Kelly was walking through the shelves and shelves of books and magazines through the library. She had loved to read and read almost every book at her house that her parents owned. Although now she couldn’t decide on a book to take out and read.
She continued to pace the shelves and spotted another girl standing at a shelf holding a book. The girl looked as if she were a first year such as Kelly was. “Hello” Kelly said with a smile hoping that the girl was friendly and would say something back.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 01:20 AM (GMT)
A pleasant voice caught the ears of the first year who had been flicking through book after book. Samantha turned to see to whom the voice may belong to, for a girl with such a seemingly nice and joyful greetin was not to be ignored.
A small smile was present on the Gryffindors lips as she faced a girl who looked to be around the same age as she was. Everything else was still unknown, and Samantha, while perfectly pleasant once one gets to know her, was often quite judgemental to those new to her. Indeed, friends were not many among her, and yet, she felt no need for them; loneliness was her paridise.
"Hi," she said, her voice calm and pleasant, though the less pleasant side of her couldn't help but add, "And you want what?"
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 01:31 AM (GMT)
Kelly was a bit surprised by the girls remark. She wasn‘t sure if the girl would reply to her at all, she was glad that she did though. “I…um…just wanted to introduce myself. I’m Kelly,” she said to the girl. She looked around the library and noticed some students sitting and reading. They looked really into the books they were reading, much as she did when she found a rather good book.
Kelly shifted her wait on to her other foot. Then she ran her fingers through her hair and then folded her hands. She looked to the girl and waited for a reply to her statement.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 01:43 AM (GMT)
Introduce herself? Was that all?
Samantha had never quite understood the kind of people who took it upon themselves to make aquintances everywhere they went. In fact, she was more suspious of them than anything else; parania was quite the factor in this Gryffindor's life.
"Kelly," the first year repeated, trying to appear as though she was glad to meet the girl. However, this wasn't entirely true, for at the momment, she had a strong urge to return to the bookshelves. And yet, Samantha felt it wouldn't be quite right to dismiss this girl without a second thought, a feeling that she would follow for at least a little bit longer.
"Well then, I guess you are. I mean, Kelly. Yeah, you are Kelly," replied Samantha, stumbling over a few of her words. Her pale face touched upon the faint color of rose pink, but she fought it back with a fake grin, whether or not it would be convincing to the eye.
"Yeah. I mean, hi. Well, I guess it was nice to - Is! Is nice to meet you. Yeah."
And that was that. Inside, though, the young girl was fuming with herself. To think that she, Samantha Peski, should present such a show before this stranger! It was humiliating, to say the least, and a bitter bunch into the side of her pride. Still, a smile remained her best friend as she stared the other in the eye, trying to repair her wounded pride.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 01:50 AM (GMT)
Kelly watched as the girl spoke. The girl seemed kind of nervous or scared in a way, but that could be just the way she is. Although she could not understand why, she hadn‘t thought that she could be a scary person in any way. Of coarse she had her moods when she wanted to be left alone and didn‘t want to talk to anyone, but she never found herself scary in those times.
“It is nice to meet you too, umm….sorry I didn’t catch your name?” she said. She meant to ask the girls name but didn’t know any other way to but it other than that way or just plain out asking. Just asking never really appealed to her. It made her feel like she was a 5 year old who goes up to random people asking for their names, and that didn’t appeal to her at all.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
"That's because I didn't toss it."
It was short. It was witty. Indeed, despite it being quite lame, Samantha found herself extremely fond of her responce, not at all bothering to worry whether or not it would affend the girl. The Gryffindor had never been the most caring of people, and all she was currently focussed on was the healing of her pride; there was little doubt in her mind that thir reply had done just that.
"So, seriously, what do you want?" continued the Gryffindor, feeling herself ease slightly within, "Surely to tell me that you were Kelly- I mean, are Kelly, is not the only reason you bother- Sorry, confronted me?"
Idiot! Why couldn't she string more than a sentence or two together before tripping over her words? And she had been doing so well reviving herself from her first humiliation, and now this! Mentally shaking her head, Samantha let out a sigh, turning slightly to return to her search for the right book. Inwardly, she felt she had given this girl enough of her tiem already.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 02:10 AM (GMT)
“Okay, fine. Honestly I just wanted to introduce myself,” Kelly said again. She still tried to sound polite but felt quite annoyed and did not know if that would come out through her voice. Why else would she randomly be talking to someone? If she wanted to do something mean and evil to somebody, she would just do it to someone who had cause harm to her or her friends. And since she didn’t know this girl she really did not have a reason to do harm or be evil.
“Do I really need a reason to introduce myself?” She added. This time she knew that she has the sense of being annoyed in her voice. She would’ve said it with some sort of power to it, but considered all the people reading. She didn’t want to disturb them.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
Just wanted. Wow. How original.
Samantha snickered to herself upon hearing this responce, though her eyes never left the bookshelf. She had not yet caught onto any annoyance that might have taken hold of the other, nor was it likely that she would ahve cared much if she did. None the less, she kept her ears open, even if Samantha did not feel the need to respond.
And then it came; the annoyed responce, the addition the girl's first responce. This caused a small smile to appear on the face of Samantha, though it didn't last long. Indeed, while pride was a matter of importance and smugness one of security, this Gryffindor was not one fond of crueal and/or mean words, just a user. And her conscience was not always absent; it was its strong urges the caused Samantha to twist her head back in the direction of the other.
Calm face. Sweet smile. No, not too sweet. Pleasant, warm, subtle; Yes, a subtle and warm smile, that was it. And no blushing.
"I don't know, for I don't know you."
There, short and simple. Surely that would do, though Samantha, surely that was good enough. And yet, with a quick glance back at the bookshelves, and then over once more to the girl, the Gryffindor felt it only right to add her name. No, no, name was to pacific. Year? There were seven of them... House. With nod, Samantha looked up at the girl. She would annoucne ehr hosue.
"I'm Gryffindor. Yeah- Wait, no- I'm a Gryffindor. Yeah, that's it."
Jeez, these words were hard to get a hang of. Shaking her head slightly, Samantha awaited the responce of the other while turning back to the many books in attempt to hide the furious pink that was bursting out on her cheeks.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 02:39 AM (GMT)
Kelly looked at her with a blank face. ‘Wow, she told me her house?’ she said in her head. At this point Kelly was sure that the girl was only trying to push her buttons. She was used to this however. She had grown up with many brothers and a sister. Although she wasn’t the oldest nor the youngest in the family, she naturally was picked on by the others. She had also became an annoyance to her siblings as well, but they still were much of an annoyance. Anyway, she knew how to deal with them in almost and every any situation that was brought upon her.
“Okay, and I’m a Ravenclaw,” she said to her with a bit more of a tone of annoyance once more. ‘Why did she tell me her house?’ she asked herself in her head.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 02:52 AM (GMT)
Now Samantha was confused. However, she kept her eyes focussed on the books as she tried to process why this girl still had a hint of annoyance in her voice. She had communicated with her, right? Told her some information about herself? Why, she had given this girl the name of her house!
Finding no answer to this question that she was willing to accept, the first year turned back to the other, letting a sigh excape from her lips. However, she did not reply right away; instead, Samantha took a few seconds of silence to gather her thoughts and perhaps get this 'introduction' thing right this time.
"Oh. How nice."
What else? There msut be something more to say, right?
Samanta removed a book from the shelf and began to flip through it, though her eyes remained focussed on the other, as did her mind. The book itself has no real other purpose than something for her hands to fidget with, a little trick that managed to help the Gryffindor a little, an amount that is much greater than none at all.
"So... Uh... Are you annoyed?"
D***! She hadn't meant to say that, she hadn't wanted to say that... But with a sigh, Samantha accepted it as said, tried to ignore the pink glow of her cheeks, and searched for a smile that would show this girl she had meant no insult by this remark.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 03:04 AM (GMT)
Kelly stared at the girl with a blank look for a bit. The girl was flipping through a somewhat large book but Kelly could not tell if she was actually looking at or reading anything inside of it. But she also wasn’t trying too hard to find out. If this girl didn’t bother to be kind to her she wasn’t going to make much of an effort to be kind to her.
Usually when someone decided to try and make friends with a person, they usually start out with a name and go from there. This girl however did not do that and this was taking on a whole new situation for Kelly. Not that she couldn’t find a way to react, because obviously she did, but she didn’t know if she should still try and be friends with her if the girl didn’t want to be friends also.
“Am I annoyed? Hmm…What do you think? Do I look annoyed?” she finally said. She couldn’t tell if she has said it to make her annoyed or just said it for the fun of it, so she really didn’t put any emotions behind the words she had said. She stood there and waited for the girl’s reply.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 03:35 AM (GMT)
The girls responce took Samantha by surprise. However, she was not hurt, or insulted, or even confused and/or annoyed. Instead, she gave a chuckle, finding amusement in the girl's responce. But instead of the cold, hardly warm snicker she had given before, this chuckle was somewhat pleasant, showing the outline of a grin that was urging to show itself.
After finishing her chuckle, which had been quite refreshing, the first year returned the book to the shelf before her. Perhaps this girl actually had a bit of personality about her was the first noticable thought to race through Samantha's mind. And then she found her hand dropping in fron of her almost as if it wanted to shake the hand of the other.
Another blush, another quick glance at the bookshelf, and a small sigh as she realised that she had just offered her hand out for a hand shake. And yet, reason also had its toll with her, the reason that shaking hands with another human being is not the end of the world, nor is it incredibly diminishing.
Lifting her eyes to the other, Samantha decided to add words to her actions, saying with a bit of cheer, "Hi, I'm... Well, I'm a Samantha. I mean, I am Samantha."
And wouldn't you know it, that blush just kept growing.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 03:50 AM (GMT)
“Hello again, Samantha,” Kelly said to her. With that she took Samantha’s hand and shook it. She also let out a little smile to her to show that she could be friendly to her again once more.
Although the beginning of this ‘conversation’ had Kelly a bit confused, she did not feel as to ponder it. Why would someone give such an attitude if they were just going to tell their name anyway? She did not feel like trying to find an answer this question, and she did not feel that it should be answered. Even if she should ask that, the answer could be something along the lines of because I felt like it, or I wanted it that way, and this didn’t matter to her at all.
She looked to her right and picked out a book on a shelf. She opened it and saw the tiny print. She looked at the first page and began reading a bit.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 04:08 AM (GMT)
"Hey."
It was short, it was pleasant, and it was music to Samantha's ears. Maybe she could actually hold a conversation with this girl, this Kelly from Ravenclaw. About what, Samantha had no idea, but she was begining to feel as though she might be in the mood to try.
But how to phrase it? This time, she was able to stop herself before just bluntly announcing that she was in the mood for conversation. She was also able to refrain herself from asking the other if a conversation would suit her. However, besides those two options, Samantha really couldn't think of another way to start a good bit on conversation between the two.
With a sigh, the first year turned back to the book shelf, thinking to herself that it might just be better that way. After all, she didn't normally get this far in a conversation with another; in fact, she hardly ever talked to anyone. Maybe she should just let that be the case, let this girl go on her way. Indeed, the Gryffindor could find hardly any problems with that, besides the small part within her that had gained a bit of fondness for this Kelly of Ravenclaw.
"Handling Mystical Creatures... Read it... Magical Creatures & Mythical Beasts... Read it... Mystical Creatures of England... Oh come on, who cares," Samantha began to mutter under her breath as she went back to searching through the bookcase. However, that didn't stop her eyes from tearing themselves away from the books every once and a while to see what Kelly was up to.
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 09:16 PM (GMT)
‘Wow, maybe I can actually talk to this Samantha now’ thought Kelly. The first couple words of the ‘conversation‘ seemed as thought Samantha didn‘t want anything to do with her at all, but maybe now was different? Maybe Samantha actually did want to talk to Kelly and be come a somewhat friend with her?
“Interested in magical creatures, or no?” asked Kelly to test this question. Maybe Samantha did want to talk to her? Basically, if Samantha didn’t want anything to do with Kelly then she wouldn’t answer her and she would just get back to searching through the shelves, or doing whatever it was she was doing before Kelly had interrupted her.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
Samantha looked up, turning her head back in the direction of the other. Apparently Kelly was not yet done talking to her. However, this time, the first year didn't complain as much. Sure, she was in the mood to find a good book, and would really perfer to spend her time searching for it, but this girl had seemed 'okay' up to this part; for the most part, anyway.
"Yeah," she said, turning back to the books that she had been browsing through, "I find them interesting." She paused there, taking the time to remove one of the smaller sized books from the shelf.
"Mythicall Creatures of the Muggle World..." she muttered to herself before turning to the other. As she did this, the Gryffindor lifted the book up to show the other. After all, isn't this what others did when they wanted to include another in a conversation? It sure made sense to Samantha, so she followed this instinct, feeling pretty confident that she wouldn't regret this decision.
"Look at this," she said, "As if one would actual care what those muggles think are of truth and not. They're hardly the right sort to judge what is myth and what is not, eh, Raven- I mean, Kelly."
Kelly Mullers - January 2, 2007 10:06 PM (GMT)
“Yes, very true,” Kelly said to her with a chuckle.
She actually did find it funny that muggles should be able to decide what is mythical and what isn’t. But she also truthfully didn’t really care weather someone was a muggle, half blood, or pure blood. Magic was magic to her, and she didn’t really see a difference in it.
Kelly looked around and saw that all the books around them had titles consisting of the word ‘muggle’ or ‘mythical‘. Not that she hadn’t read books on these two subjects, they just weren’t her idea of good reading. She liked books with facts, and ones that told good stories.
Samantha Peski - January 2, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
A small smile snuck itself onto the lips of the first year as she returned the book to its shelf. Apparently Kelly had a bit of sense about her, or so Samantha would ahve figured by the way she responded. Personally, Samantha had little affection for those of the muggle world; she found them dull, uninteresting, and untalented. However, her father insisted otherwise, calling them 'ingenius' for having been able to make a life for themselves without the use of magic.
As for 'muggle creatures', they were a different case. They had uses and a love for life that impressed even this young girl. However, she still perfered reading about the mystical and magical creatures, the creatures that had fasinating stories and histories about them; the kind you didn't find in the muggle world.
With a smile, Samantha finally picked out a book that pleased her: Within The Scales: A History of the Dragons of the North. That seemed like it would do nicely for tonight, exspecially when the common room finally emptied for bed.
"I found what I needed," she said, leaving it plain and simple. The first year also turned to the otehr as she said this, holding the book in her hands. However, she did not add any other words, for she did not know what, and if, else there was left to say.
Kelly Mullers - January 3, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
“Within The Scales: A History of the Dragons of the North. I find dragons quite interesting, don‘t you?” Kelly said to her. She saw a book laying on the ground and picked it up. The title read <I> The Beginners Guide to the Muggle World <I>. She laughed and put it onto one of the shelves.
“Wow. Who would’ve guessed they made guide’s to the muggle world?” she said with a chuckle.
“So reading that for a class?” Kelly asked Samantha pointing to the book in her hands.
Samantha Peski - January 3, 2007 03:28 AM (GMT)
The words that came out of the Kelly's mouth next caused a small giggle - not a chuckle - to escape from the young first year. Of coruse, she hardly noticed it herself as, though she would probably never admit to herself, was begining to loosen up slightly around this girl.
"Hmm, I don't know. Maybe I can learn the answer to that by looking to see if I really have a book on them in my hands," replied Samantha with a soft laugh, thinking herself funny, "Yeah, it says 'Dragons' on it. I must be." And wouldn't you know it, not a single wrogn word said.
With that, Samantha was just about to turn to leave and return to her common room. However, this attempt was cut short by another comment from the other, which, at this point, Samantha was nto about to ignore. And so the Gryffindor stayed where she was, even though her foot began to tap on the floor slightly; whether this was for impatientness or nervousness was uncertain even to Samantha.
"Uh... Well, it would be if there was a Care of Magical Creatures class. Wait, no- I mean, if I were old enough to take such a class. Yeah," she replied, cursing the screw up of what had meant to be an attempt to make the other smile.
Kelly Mullers - January 4, 2007 12:59 AM (GMT)
“Well that’s interesting, I guess,” Kelly said to her. She looked down at her feet and folded her hands because she couldn’t think of anything else to say.
She looked up at the shelf. It looked to be double her height and carried many books of all sorts. She looked around the library saw most of the tables filled up, but then she spotted some in the back that weren’t. It seemed as if no one wanted to sit back by the windows, and she couldn’t imagine why. She also saw that more people had come in now and were either reading something, or talking quietly with their friends. So she figured that her and Samantha looked like they fit in somewhat and if not, maybe a little bit.
