Title: Cayman

Jolly Roger - March 25, 2006 05:17 PM (GMT)
Model: Evolution 26
Name: Cayman
Built: 1981
Engine: 7hp BMW inboard
Registration No: SSR 82451
Mooring: Katelios, Kefalonia, Greece

Details of use: I have owned Cayman for 10 years. She was originally purchased because of the lift keel and I planned to keep her on a shallow water mooring in Kefalonia. At the time I didn’t fully appreciate all the other qualities of this design. The BMW engine is original and its’ lack of power is possibly the only thing that lets the boat down. However, I do not have strong currents or tides to contend with. Speed under power is limited to a maximum of 4 knots, but I usually only need the engine to get in and out of the harbour.

She was originally berthed at Exmouth but in 1999/2000 I sailed her to Greece. This involved a crossing to Brittany and following the French coastline to the River Gironde. Then from Bordeaux into the Canal Lateral and Canal Du Midi to Agde in the Mediterranean. Here, she was left for the winter at Port Napoleon near Marseilles, an excellent British owned boatyard. From here we followed the South coast of France to Nice and then crossed to Corsica. Then to Elba and down the Italian coast with stops at Capri and Ischia before reaching the Strait of Messina. Then a three day crossing of the Ionian to Kefalonia. In all, about 2000 miles which took a total of 11 weeks, much of which was spent in harbours waiting for bad weather to pass.

At present I use her for day trips and occasional trips to Zakinthos, Ithaka and Lefkas. I often take visitors for trips with some sailing instruction thrown in, for anyone that is interested.
