Quite a few of the shows I like I found by word of mouth from other people, so I like to pass along some info about other shows that I've found from time to time. Here are two shows worth checking out if you want to watch something funny:
The first is an anime show called "Duel Masters". I just found this about a month ago when I was looking around for something to watch while waiting for new Dragon Booster episodes to show up. Duel Masters is another one of those Japanese shows based on a trading card game like Yu-Gi-Oh. And like Yu-Gi-Oh, the characters actually play the game during the show. I typically don't like these kind of shows since they're little more than 30 minute commercials for the card game and I don't find that interesting to watch. But Duel Masters has a different twist to it: for the English version, they completely threw away the Japanese script and wrote a new script that's satirical and funny and loaded with Western pop culture references. The characters also routinely criticize and make fun of the show itself: they comment on the funny hair and clothing styles, the odd camera angles, the weak special effects and so on. The characters still play the card game, but everything else is completely re-scripted and generally very funny. Here's one example to give you an idea: the main character's father is missing for some reason (what else is new, right) and in one episode he has a flash back to when his father was teaching him to ride a bicycle and his father's dialogue goes like this:
"Remember son, I'll always be here for you. ... Well, not literally of course. Because soon I'm going to disappear from your life for no reason and leave you completely on your own. ... But, um ... metaphorically speaking ... I'll, um, always be here for you."
So if this type of non-stop silliness appeals to you, you might want to check it out. In the USA it airs on the Cartoon Network at 7pm Eastern time on Saturdays.
The other show is MXC which is a live action show on the Spike TV channel in the US. MXC stands for Most eXtreme Challenge and it's aimed at adults. It's the same concept as Duel Masters: they took an existing Japanese show and re-scripted and dubbed it into something completely different and funny. In this case, they took this outlandish Japanese game show called "Takeshi's Castle" where people have to complete these really bizarre obstacle course challenges to win prizes, and remade the whole show into a mock sporting event. They scripted it as if the contestants are world class athletes competing in a very serious Olympics class sporting event. The two game show hosts are re-cast as sports commentators and their dialogue added to the goofiness of the contestants and the absurdity of the obstacle courses is just hilarious.
I don't know if either of these shows airs anywhere outside the US, but if you're looking for something funny, they're both worth checking out to see if they're on where you live.
I don't think either of them do, but that "Duel Masters" sounds great. Mind you, it's probably on cable. <_<
I've heard of Duel Masters, but not the other show.
That Duel Masters sounds like it'd be really, really funny. I love stuff that makes funof itself. I haven't seen it on the tv round here though. Probably would be on cable.. meh.
I've seen bits of Duel masters, i have issues with anything lik eit though, Digimon was another, althoguh i hated Pokemon, I despised Digimon even more for beign a cheap rip off.
I'm not bothered with the commercial aspect of cartoons, just about every cartoon you switch on is a long advert for the merchandice. PowerPuff girls had merchandice out before the show was aired.
I remember Takeshi's castle, they used to show it on one of those worl'ds wackiest television shows- every episode had at least one shot of Takeshi's castle somewhere, it was hysterical...
