Description: Episode fourteen
The Furox - May 22, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
Is there anyone here who's seen this episode and would like to talk about it? I know we've got some other people from North America here and there seem to be some lurkers popping by now and then. Any of you care to talk about this one?

Artha Gurl - May 23, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
I was surprised Artha trusted Parm so much with the gear, most of the time he seems unsure. It was hilarious though!!!
Baby_Beau - May 23, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)

For me, that was the best gag in the show. So much of comedy is timing and they had that down pat. It cuts perfectly from Word's scream when the Muhorta gets him during the flash back from "All is Not Lost" to when he's standing with Moordryd behind him and Word suddenly realizes he's screaming out loud in front of Moordryd who's staring at him in disbelief and then the awkward and embarrassed look on Word's face. Perfect timing and perfect animation in the facial expressions. This gag made me burst out laughing.
I wasn't too big on the rest of the jokes but that's mainly just my own preference for the more serious stories. Still, I don't mind them trying a variety of story types, and even though I was a little lukewarm on "Three Times a Hero" initially, that episode grew on me over time. So maybe this one will as well. I'm going to watch it again tonight when it comes on Toon Disney to take a second look at it.
Artha Gurl - May 24, 2005 09:14 PM (GMT)
Um... my favorite part was probably when Word had the flashback and was screaming in front of Moordryd, that or when Kitt and Parm were switching the gear. :D
Artha Gurl - May 24, 2005 09:34 PM (GMT)
Oh, KittxArthaforever, did you see "Broken Bonds" yet? that was an awsome ep!! I just saw it. Spratt was in it!! Yay!!!!
Baby_Beau - May 24, 2005 09:51 PM (GMT)
I made a new post 'bout it! Spratt was evil... yet cute! :D He was a BAAAAAD boy! Stealing. Tsk Tsk!
LightningFlash - May 25, 2005 12:40 AM (GMT)
Spratt? Oh, cool.
(Even if I am cringing at the mention of 'Kid-brother's-best-friend-stealing-therefore-getting-everyone-in-trouble-where-is-our-noble-hero?')

Oh, he was being kidnapped :D
LightningFlash - May 29, 2005 12:27 AM (GMT)
Ah, of course.
Did Word finally figure out who he is? Kidnap the Hero, take off his mask, and ta da! Instant reveal!
KittxArtha forever - May 29, 2005 04:04 AM (GMT)
WHAT! artha kidnapped?! how can it be?! wait when was this?!!
Sarah Frost - May 29, 2005 05:36 AM (GMT)
Have you ever seen Spiderman 2?
Even if you haven't, LightningFlash was referring to an easy technique regarding heroes with secret identities, present in the film: kidnap them and take off their masks. As far as I know, this hasn't happened yet in Dragon Booster.
Of course, since he knows Kitt is associated with the Dragon Booster, he should be having her tailed. And from then he could have figured Genius!Parm (who like Kitt should be helping the Dragon Booster), and it would've been very easy to find out what Artha was. And in 'Chromatic Dragon' it was almost painfully obvious. I'm blaming the blatant stupidity on the writers rather than Word.
Artha Gurl - May 29, 2005 07:01 PM (GMT)
Actually, they couldn't figure out how to take the mask off. Word got really annoyed.
Sarah Frost - May 29, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
So just cut his head off!
LightningFlash - May 30, 2005 12:40 AM (GMT)
Artha Gurl - May 30, 2005 05:16 PM (GMT)
I was wondering if they were going to because when they couldn't get it off, Word said that it was made in the "old ways with gold draconium" and that as long as the wearer was alive, it could not be removed.
Sarah Frost - May 30, 2005 07:53 PM (GMT)
It would've been the act of either a stupid or merciful villain not to cut Artha's head off, I think. Unless Artha's speshul suit protected him from harm--and that's just making him even MORE overpowered, isn't it?
Baby_Beau - May 31, 2005 10:00 PM (GMT)
Word was examining the helmet of Arthas suit and it was really funny because you saw him from Arthas point of view and he was all skewed.
Daigerus - September 10, 2005 08:15 PM (GMT)
Yes! I've finally seen "If It Ain't Broke"! I'm surprised the directors allowed a word that isn't usually a part of the English language. ^^;
Anyway, like the Furox said, the best gag was Word's prolonged scream from his flashback to the present. It was so unexpected, yet such perfect timing. Maybe Word did have such a closeness to his own dragon that he felt the pain of having his energy sucked out. ;)
I thought Spratt was going to appear in this episode when some started talking about him, but then now I realize he was in "Broken Bonds". Also, I thought Stewardd was acting a bit too mischievous at the beginning. I wonder how he managed to push all those heavy things at Moordryd and Cain.
Another comment was how this episode borrowed a lot of similar scenes from other episodes, like the Dragon Eye crew stealing dragons, Artha and Beau practicing in that training room, the introduction before racing, but everything else was all brand new.
The episode also hinted of other female racers, such as the one Morrdryd took down in the second leg of the Gauntlet. And Artha's becoming more acrobatic; the way he handled the third leg of the race was simply a moment of "Woah, he's obviously getting better at this kind of stuff".
I'm also surprised why Mortis didn't explicitly agree with Kitt's point of view. Maybe he's putting more trust in Artha about doing the right thing, even without his help.
And a question: what did Moordryd say in the end of the episode? I couldn't quite catch it.

At the end, Moordryd uses Parm's quote when Parm's gear failed on Artha in the practice course. It failed on Moordryd too and he ended up being snagged with dragons racing round his head. :D
Cain: Gee, does it take falls too?
Moordryd: *woozily* Must need...tweaking...

Yeah, did you notice that this was the same animation that appeared in the opening of "The Stand"? They changed the background so they're in a different location, but the animation of Moordryd and Cain and the two dragons they're stealing is all recycled from "The Stand" but sped up slightly. I thought that was kind of clever: it gives you a nice flashback sort of moment of "there's Moordryd and Cain up to same old thing again" and it saves them time and money on the animation end. The speed-up was a good idea too, since we've already seen them steal dragons before and this moves the scene along to the more interesting part.

I think this episode has aired in Australia already. Perhaps we can get more opinions on this one?
IMO, the show was just fine, though more in the humor department than anything else. And Word screaming was just the best gag yet (right next to, er...another one. ;)).
hyperpsychomaniac - October 7, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)
Yeah, us Aussies just saw it last Tuesday. :D
Word screaming was funny. I so didn't expect it, so I'm just like o_O what the...? Bit I liked best was probably at the end, Moordryd's just sitting all high and mighty on Desepcion, and then the 'deflection gear' just turns off. And he gets whacked and entangled. That was funny :)
Another thing I noticed was when Parm is sitting at that desk trying to fix the gear, he's doing that bouncy, jittery thing with his leg? I do that sometimes. :D :D :D

Yes! That made me burst out laughing. One of the few times this show has done that to me. A great little gag!

Though Decepshun didn't seem all that happy about being roped rodeo style. :) One could imagine she had something to "say" to Moordryd afterwards...

Me, too. Lots of people do that when they're nervous or under pressure, and Parm was feeling both at that instant.
So did everyone like the shell game they played with the gear? :) It was kind of fun to keep track of which piece of gear was where at any given instant.
The other thing about this episode that I don't think we've talked about yet is how this story parallels "The Stand." In fact, the episode opens with the exact same animation of Moordryd and Cain stealing dragons that was used in "The Stand" (though they switched it to a different set). Like in "The Stand," Artha wants to use a piece of gear as an easy way to get ahead and win the race. The difference, of course, is that in this episode he correctly makes the decision not to use the gear and rely on his own abilities instead. And he gets the reward of winning the race based on that. I think it's pretty clear that this episode was scripted to show the growth of Artha's character. It was perhaps a bit blatant, but I just like the fact that the characters are actually evolving in this show. That's so rare for western TV animation.
Parmon fans should be sure not to miss the next episode: "Rules of Power." Parm's in the spotlight this time along with Cyrano who does more and has more facial expressions in this one episode than he had in all previous 14 episodes combined. (Though some of you may be disappointed that you don't get to see Parmon in his underwear this time. :P )
