Title: Trading Card Game
Sparx - April 20, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
Has anyone actually played it?
Sarah Frost - April 20, 2005 12:14 AM (GMT)
No. Don't plan to. Doesn't seem interesting at all.
KittxArtha forever - April 20, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)

LightningFlash - April 20, 2005 02:50 AM (GMT)
Goddesstears was talking about buying some today.
Doubt that we'll ever get 'em down here.
ShadowCat - April 20, 2005 02:52 AM (GMT)
The trading card game doesn't really interest me either.
Goddesstears - April 28, 2005 02:36 AM (GMT)
I usually end up buying trading cards just to collect. LOL! I mean, I did have like Yu-Gi-Oh cards and played some games, but now people get into other things and you're just left with cards sitting in a box. But oh well. They are pretty neat looking. Call me crazy if you must, because well, I'm crazy.
ShadowCat - April 28, 2005 08:36 AM (GMT)
I used to play TCGs, but I can't really anymore. Not without some help, anyway. I don't miss it much! There were never many people to play with and it gets boring playing the same people after a while.
Khatah - April 5, 2006 06:12 AM (GMT)

Waiting? The cards came out over a year ago. Or did you mean you're waiting for someone you know to give them to you as a gift. ;)

If you folks want cards, I can get them for you at the local game store. They give me a hefty discount on them since I've helped them run tournaments and events. Starter decks (60 random cards plus 1 dragon card and 4 assorted gear/crew cards) are US$5. Reimburse me for the cost of the cards plus postage and I'll send it to you. I'd consider trading for something as well.
If you plan to get into serious collecting and/or deck building, I can get booster packs as well.
Khatah - April 26, 2006 01:30 AM (GMT)
Im waiting for the to come out in australia Furox :D
The Furox - April 27, 2006 08:22 AM (GMT)
The trading card game is pretty difficult to find in stores, but I'd say it's about as out now (worldwide) as it's ever going to get. :) If it hasn't appeared in any of your local stores by now, it basically never will. If you're looking for cards, I'd recommend finding a mail order place that has them before it's too late. It's a decent game and I've enjoyed playing it, but unfortunately it just hasn't caught on which is too bad.
IbanezJFS - May 8, 2006 04:12 AM (GMT)
Although I dont know much about the game. I just might by a traiding pack and, learn to play. Just to show my support for the show. And, to help keep it on the air.
The Furox - May 8, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
Of course, if you want to play, you'll need two decks: one for you and one for a friend. :)
The game is well designed. I like it a lot better than Magic myself. In particular, DB is a lot faster paced. The difficulty is finding other people who want to play.
SilverDragon - September 10, 2006 11:54 AM (GMT)
You know, if any of us had fairly good programming skills we could make a sort of virtualised version that we could play over the internet with each other. Sort of like the NetBattle thing for Pokemon.
I want the cards for display.
The Furox - September 11, 2006 06:33 AM (GMT)
Is that a not-so-subtle hint, SilverDragon? :D
Yes, I'm a software engineer and I'm doing network programming these days. And I've actually thought about the possibility of implementing an online version of the TCG in some (probably simple) form. In fact, I started thinking about it over a year ago. I would probably do it as a web based application to simplify the display end of things and eliminate the need to download any software to your computer, but I'd still have to write a server capable of allowing people to link up and play a game together. That's something I haven't done before and would require some study on my part. I could learn how to do it, but the whole thing would be a fairly significant invest in time for me which would take away from doing other things. And therein lies the rub:
If I were to take on a pretty big project like this, who here would actually get seriously into the game and play along with me? I would love it if there was a group here who wanted to explore all the game play possibilities with me. The premiere set of the games contains 13 dragons, about 50 pieces of gear, over 40 crew members and plenty of event and maneuver cards to make an enormous number of strategic possibilities. Just trying out all the dragons alone could keep us occupied for quite some time. But unless there's a group of people here who would really want to play over a long time period and not just play a game or two and then bow out, it's difficult to imagine putting in the development time on making an online version of the game.
So would anyone seriously be interested in playing this game online and making a serious time commitment to explore the strategies? If enough people were to step up and convince me that they're serious about playing for the long term, I might actually do this.

I can get you all the cards you want. The cards themselves are pretty cheap; the postage to mail them to you would be a bit more. You might look for an online retailer in Australia that sells them first. But if you can't otherwise get them, then just ask me. I just shipped off a bunch of cards to IbanezJFS, so it's easy enough to do.
SilverDragon - September 11, 2006 10:05 AM (GMT)
I think I'll look around in Australia first. I think I heard someone say they found them in some store here.

I've heard that too from someone who contacted me through dragon-city.org. For reference, the cards are priced here as follows (all prices in USD):
Starter decks have a retail list price of $15, but most stores sell them for $10. I can get them for $5.
Booster packs generally sell for $4 each. I can get them for $2 each. And if you let me peek inside to see if Brutaris happens to be in there (the one dragon I haven't found yet), then I'll let you have them for $1 each.
If you decide you want some cards, just ask.
The Hydrag - April 26, 2007 03:14 AM (GMT)
Im purchasing some through the Furox and I intend to play a ton however hard it is. If nothing else they will bring back wonderfull memories.
The Furox - April 26, 2007 05:49 AM (GMT)
I've played quite a bit locally when the store here was running tournaments (sadly, those days have ended), and the game is definitely fun if you're into the show. Each dragon has different strengths and abilities, then you have to pick compatible gear, crew members, plus event and maneuver cards to make up a winning deck. There are 13 different dragons to start with, so the possible strategies for building your deck is almost endless. You can play this game a lot of different ways for a very long time if you wanted to. It's a fun sort of puzzle if you're into that sort of thing. :)
Renesh - May 1, 2007 07:12 AM (GMT)
In regards to the online game, I tend to be off-and-on with anything online, but I would definately make an effort to get on to play regularly.
The Furox - May 2, 2007 04:29 AM (GMT)
I've still been thinking on and off about making an online version of the game. I read about some new web technology called AJAX that would greatly simplify the game server and make this easier to implement. For anyone who cares, AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript with XML, and XML stands for Extensible Mark-up Language. You just gotta love nested acronyms. :D
We seem to have a few people who have expressed some degree of interest in playing. I think the group is IbanezJFS, The Hydrag, Renesh and myself. Maybe that's enough to try something. We'll see. The problem is trying to find time to write the programs.
