Title: Slash And Older Db Fans - Attention Please
Description: so, if I build it...will you come?
Penny Dreadful - May 22, 2008 01:17 PM (GMT)
Somewhat recently, I made myself a new LiveJournal account. Even more recently, I've gotten back into the Dragon Booster fandom.
Upon working on my own fic and, and looking through fics I missed while away, I realized there was a considerable amount of slash, fem-slash, ect for such a small fandom. It also occurred to me that there was really no good place to put such material. Dragon Booster is, of course, a kid's show. Mature fanwork is sometimes lost in huge archives populated, predominantly, by the younger fan-base.
I'm considering opening up a LJ group for DB fanwork targeted toward older fans. I realize this isn't going to attract any members if I just throw the group out there. I have several ideas in mind for finding members, and this is just my first stop. :)
Before I put a lot of time and effort into creating the group itself, I wanted to at least get a handful of people interested. Please reply here or PM me if you're at all intrigued.
Mind you, I'm not delusional. The best I'm hoping for is an intimate little group sharing fanwork and discussion and maybe even holding the occasional challenge or contest. Personally, I'm a fan of small groups, but I would like at least several people willing to remain active in the group before I take this to step two.
Don't hesitate to reply or PM me with any questions. I only ask that you don't e-mail me directly. My e-mail often bounces the occasional message.

It true that there isn't a good place to put these kind of fanwork. I do upload some of them on deviantart but I don't feel enough confortable uploading them there, and I like drawing slash especially from DB characters, so, you can count with me :)
Penny Dreadful - May 23, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
Good to know ^_^
Be sure to pass the word on to anyone you think might be willing to join as well. I'd still like a few more people to show interest before starting up the group.
That aside though, I do love your art. If (when) I start the group, maybe you could offer up some of your fanart for the layout?

Sure, also I was thinking to announce it in my deviantart journal.

Of course or I can make I special drawing for the group, something that shows slash and femslash
Penny Dreadful - May 23, 2008 05:22 AM (GMT)
The slash and fem-slash fanart would be perfect. In the meantime, the announcement would be much appreciated. I've spread the word around other places a bit tonight so, hopefully, I'll get some responses soon.
The Furox - May 24, 2008 06:07 AM (GMT)
The other possibility in addition to using LiveJournal would be to create your own invisionfree.com forum specifically for the type of artwork and stories you want to share. Among other things, this would let you set an appropriate minimum age for the members and so forth. It's basically a matter of whether you prefer the interface of LiveJournal or the invisionfree forums. Just a thought. :)
Penny Dreadful - May 24, 2008 12:20 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Furox :)
I don't think the group will get large enough that we'll need all the space an entire forum will provide though. Plus, if I hope to get new members, LJ is easily searchable. Communities that share your interests are pretty easy to stumble upon.
That said, a quick update: More people have shown interest off-site and seem more than willing to stay relatively active. I would still like a bit more feedback first. A couple more members would be sufficient. Knock on wood - things are looking good so far though.
Ethe - May 26, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
If you build it, I will come. <3
Penny Dreadful - May 26, 2008 01:26 AM (GMT)
And there's my handful.
Nayade and Ethe as well as a few people off-site (FF.net and LJ). Any naming ideas for the group (15 characters) would be much appreciated. That aside, the community should be up relatively soon.
Keep in mind, this doesn't mean I'm not still looking for more members. If you're interested, by all means, speak up.
Ethe - May 26, 2008 01:32 AM (GMT)
Hm. I've never been too terribly good with naming communities, unless they're personal.
The community "title" could probably be something like The Slash Boosters, maybe, and then the shortened, URL name could be, like, slashboosters, maybe?
Penny Dreadful - May 26, 2008 01:38 AM (GMT)
That's actually a pretty good suggestion.
Of course, the group will also allow het and femslash... but all of that combined is just much too long, and certainly not a catchy title. Hmmm, decisions...
MinervaRahn - May 26, 2008 01:39 AM (GMT)
I'm definitely joining in this group!
Penny Dreadful - May 26, 2008 01:46 AM (GMT)
Excellent! I'm glad to have you on-board. :)
Does anyone have wonderful graphic skills, btw? Nayade has been kind enough to offer some art, but I'm no ace with Photoshop. My work might be passable, but if anyone actually has talent in the area I'm more than willing to totally exploit that. :plot:
On a completely unrelated note - after being away from this forum for so long, I had totally forgotten how much I love these smilies.
Ethe - May 26, 2008 01:52 AM (GMT)
I'm reasonable with Photoshop, but it depends on what you're looking for. Headers and the like, even icons, I can do.
:cookie:
MinervaRahn - May 26, 2008 01:53 AM (GMT)
I'm pretty much a pro on Photoshop :)
so I can work on some banners and such for the group! Just need to download some screenshots from the episodes and I can work on it ;D
Penny Dreadful - May 26, 2008 02:17 AM (GMT)
Well, assuming Nayade's still willing, I intend to use some of her art rather than screenshots. Naturally, this will take time, and the group doesn't require graphics for me to start it up. When the art is a available, however, I certainly want everything looking spiffy.
I'll need a header and, maybe, a nice little image for the info page. I'll also need at least one icon for the group, but you can never have too many general DB icons aside from that. :D It's good to know that you two have some talent with Photoshop. When and if I get the pictures and if your willing to make the graphics, I'll be sure to send them your way - depending on who wants to do what.
Ethe - May 26, 2008 02:21 AM (GMT)
Sounds good to me. :3
I'm just excited for this all to start. I've needed a good DB slash community for a long, long time.
MinervaRahn - May 26, 2008 03:46 AM (GMT)
yea I'm totally up for it! just send me a message and I'll get to work on them :)
oh penny! before I forget I wanted to ask you more about the Vegas program, should I just PM you about this?
Nayade - May 26, 2008 05:47 PM (GMT)
I gladly will make the drawing for the group:cookie: . I will begin today and I hope to have it ready in some days.
Penny Dreadful - May 27, 2008 01:04 AM (GMT)
One last questions for all of you...
Are there any more suggestions for the name of the group? I intend to start it up, albeit without pretty graphics just yet, as soon as that's been decided on. Slash Boosters, as Ethe suggested, sounds decent to me. My only complaint is that the community isn't solely for slash. It is within the 15 character limit though, and does reach out to the fanbase we're trying to attract. Also, it contains the word "Booster"... Between "Dragon" and "Booster", it seems like "Booster" will connect more with the show rather than just... fans of dragons.
Granted, we could go with something more specific to the show itself. Then again, names like downcityslash remind me a bit of seedy, back-alley porn shops and serial killers... ::ahem::
... disjointed rambling finished
Opinions? Suggestions?
Dragon Fanatic - May 27, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
How old are you basing this on?
Penny Dreadful - May 27, 2008 02:54 AM (GMT)
I'm not putting up any age restriction. Any fanmedia over PG will be required under an LJ-cut though. I'm of the opinion that legal guardians need to do the parenting. PG-13 - NC-17 material will be clearly labeled as such. Since I can't actually stop anyone from looking at it or even lying about their age, I can only hope youngun's use their own discretion... or have a responsible parent breathing down their neck.
I'm going to go ahead and say that viewers need to be of legal age (depending on where they live) to view R and NC-17 material... but, realistically, we all know there's not much I can do in regards of policing the internet.
Also, keep in mind that while mild, action/adventure-ish work is allowed, it's not encouraged. If there's too much of it, I'll be doing some minor quality control.
Put simply - I don't have much control over age filters, and if you know you shouldn't be looking at the mature material... don't.
Ethe - May 27, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
Thank goodness for the lack of age filters. Those always put me off a bit, if only because there are mature readers who can "handle" R or NC-17 stories, but aren't of legal age, myself included. That, and if I've written it, I should be allowed to read it, yes? Which brings us back to the age-old question: are children who star in R and NC-17 rated movies allowed to see them? But, I digress.
I kind of like "downcityslash" myself. Maybe "Dragon City Slash", too? Slash is sort of an umbrella term, keep in mind, for both slash and femslash.
I suppose, though, if you wanted to let people know it isn't just one or the other you could go with a shortname of "downcityslash" or "slashboosters" or whatever, and have the actual name be, like, Camp Boosters or Queer Boosters- which makes it sound less like a community for Dragon Booster slash fanfiction and more like a "we're here, we're queer, we're fans of Dragon Booster" forum thing. Egh.

mmhhh... I have something in mind, like "SeinenBooster"... but is a word in Japanese and the problem is that the show isn't from Japan and some members will not understand what it means. But in the other side the word is used in anime and manga that is targeret to adults and is not necessary related to sexual terms or slash and femslash.
... I will think in other options...
Ohohoh or it can be "Word's Corner" becuase we know that Word has other interests XDDD. sorry for this :D

:faint: You made me scare my cat, I was laughing so hard...
And I certainly didn't know what "Seinen" meant, Nayade... so, I doubt that would work. And, as much as I agree that Word must have some kinky hobbies XD, I'm not sure "Word's Corner" sends the right message either.
So far, we have:
"slashboosters"
"downcityslash"
"dragoncityslash"
Anymore suggestions or a particular favorite out of these? I think we can, safely, leave "camp" or "queer" out of the title.
Ethe - May 27, 2008 05:29 AM (GMT)
I'm finding myself fonder and fonder of Down City Slash. Might just because it sounds like the sort of slash I like, but hey.
:plot:
MinervaRahn - May 27, 2008 05:51 AM (GMT)
I'm leaning towards "Down City Slash" :D its got a nice ring to it hehe
I got a couple of names that just popped into my head:
"Slash Daily Booster" or
" Memo: Dragon City Slash"
So just thought of those haha XP but I am fond of "Down City Slash" so yea! :D

buu but I like it that one (nah I'm kidding :D hehehe)

I like Dragon City Slash and Down City Slash. But I would prefer Dragon City Slash, I think it would be more easy to recognize it, but I have no problem for Down City Slash, it also fit.
Penny Dreadful - May 27, 2008 12:18 PM (GMT)
Unless I have some sort of epiphany during work (or anyone else has a change of heart/more ideas), it looks like I'll be starting up downcityslash when I get home tonight. Your suggestions were nice, but a bit too long, Minerva. Like I said, has to be 15 characters since that's the max allowed in the title slot.
Edit: And here you go...
the community minus the pretty layout just yet
