QUOTE (Burnout Beau)
Are there any inspirations behind the designs of some of the dragons in the series? For example, I noticed that Coerschun looks like a cross between a cat and a snake. Is this true?

Yes there are Burnout Beau! Since dragons are part of most cultural mythology, we looked at dragon art throughout history so that we could "touch" upon various aspects of dragons through time and relate those meanings to the crews and characters in Dragon Booster. Because those dragons from world history usually had some cultural connotation attached, meaning for example; (Europe's dragons were from a time of great fear, where you were living in walled cities and the dragons came from the sky to attack), we used that emotional undercurrent to add meaning to the designs. You are very close with your thoughts on Decephun and Coershun: Coershun is based on South American dragons and yes, cats, because the designs come from an ancient culture that was steadfast in its beliefs, (The Mayan and Aztec civilizations for example that celebrated warfare for a purpose)...which describes both Word and Moordryd. I hope that makes sense as you can see, a lot of thinking goes into this. If any of you are interested in writing or creating shows and properties, remember that the more you can research human historical meanings and put those into your characters, the more "real" those characters and stories "feel". Kevin, who deisnged all of the characters you see, spent hours and hours doing the research and crafting the dragons we all know and love!

Thanks for the question!

QUOTE (IbanezJFS @ New York)
Under the character section on the Furox's website, he has a list of all the characters as well as the meaning behind these names. But for the characters Kitt Raada Wonn and Parmon Sean we're not aware of what the meaning behind those names is. Can you tell us if those have a meaning we've missed? There are a few others that don't have clear references as well. Do all character names have a hidden meaning, or are some just names? Was there a reason you chose to use names with various meanings? Or are they just Easter eggs for the viewers? And how is Kitt's middle name pronounced? Is it RAY-da or RAW-da?

Thanks for the question IbanezJFS - There's a really funny answer to some of it too. Let's start with Parmon, well, as he was being written, he's one of the most lovable characters in the show of course, but he's a lovable "cheesy" character. As a joke, we named him after the cheese Parmasan and it stuck, Parmon Sean. OK, now to the other part of your question: Raada is pronounced Rah-Dah and she gets the name from both of her parents whom she never met. There were earlier drafts of the DB world in which Kitt had 'poor' parents whom she supported, but instead, she has poor parents who had to give their daughter up for adoption. For various reasons, Kitt never made it to her new home and was instead adopted by the a fringe element of the Dragon Flares and raised on the street, Kitt's real father's nickname was Kitt and her mom's name was Raada. I can't tell you any more about Kitt's parents as that would give away something we hope to show you some day in the Academy!

that's a cool thing with kitt, i thought that her name was kitt because that was what you call a baby fox.....it'd be funny if her father's name was Foxx or Phox :plot:

funny how much research you have to do for something like this

Ha! Phox! I like that. :)

I like the part about Coershun (and I guess black dragons in general) being based on South American dragons. My understanding is that those tend to have serpent-like bodies which certainly fits Coershun's look. It's a good look, and Coershun looks pretty cool. I like his skin pattern, too. I think it looks better than just a solid color would on him.

And what to do you know: the Parmesan cheese gag they used in "Track of Doom" was actually based on an early nickname they used for Parm during pre-production. Fun to find out little inside factoids like that. :)

The coolest part of course is that there's some yet-to-be-revealed information about Kitt's parents that we will hopefully see some day in DB: Academy. It will be most welcome to see more of Kitt's background filled in, and I like the fact that whatever it is, it's important enough to affect the story in some way. Can't wait!

Of course, what would really be cool would be if there was also something in Wyldfyr's past that's relevant to the story as well. He's an orphan too, so who knows what his early life was like. It would be fun if there was something interesting there to learn about as well.

Very Cool. Since Kitt grew up being raised by a branch of the Dragon Flares Im VERY supprised that she didnt just join them but that intsy wintsy betrayal by Phyrah probably rubbed Kitts scales the wrong way.

It did say Kitt was adopted by a "fringe element" of the Dragon Flares, so maybe that wasn't Pyrrah's crew per se. Maybe the fringe element rubbed her the wrong way, or maybe she just felt like being independent at that point in her life. And as you say, after what happened in "Fanning the Flames", it's pretty unlikely that Kitt would ever consider Pyrrah's crew in the future. ;)

Great information there, MD! Very detailed and elaborate ones too. Thank you very much! :)

I guess all black psi-class dragons do have similar designs like those of South American dragons and cats.

Btw, about the South American dragons, are they the ones that looked serpentine? Just wanna confirm.

Okay. We'll wait... :plot:

So that's how you pernounce Kitt's middle name. So Furox, you think your going to add this information to your website? As for how Kitt got Wyldfyr....I have a theory (Or at least a guess). I think he was a gift from her orginal parents. And, that's the only thin she has to remember them. I do hope that some day we will learn more about her family history and why her parents gave her up for adoption. And, since my mom was a social worker. I know how hard it is for a parent to give up their child for adoption. It's a very sad thing.

(But, don't get me wrong I support adoption. Infact I have made a pact that if I ever have children I would adopt).

Round 8 Q&A

QUOTE (Arthapenn @ Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
Although Beau can change his color, he's the only dragon in the city with that body profile. Do you have a reason in the story as to why Moordryd and Word don't figure out that the red and blue Beau is the same dragon as the black and gold Beau, especially since Artha calls out Beau's name in front them when he's the Dragon Booster? Is this just something that we the audience are supposed to ignore, like how we're supposed to ignore the fact that Lois Lane can't figure out Clark Kent is Superman just because he puts on a pair of glasses? Or does Beau generate a distortion field of some kind that confuses people around him? :-)

Thanks Arthapenn, good questions! Kevin and I always thought there were other dragons in the city with similar profiles to Beau, but of course, being a little "Superman" like, we wanted to be clear who Beau was when disguised for newer viewers of the show. Some decisions like this are made for non-fans as much as fans. Hope that helps! The Beau's name thing, was kind of a gaffe on our part, can't catch everything huh? Well, you did LOL!

QUOTE (Jalaco @ Canada)
How come Artha's eyes are blue, yet when he's the Dragon Booster, his eyes sometimes change to an orange/brown color?

That's a great question Jalaco - I wish I had a great answer LOL - You'll have to ask Nerdcorps. Looks like you guys found another small mistake. Nobody's perfect, not even Dragon Booster!

QUOTE ( DargonXKS)
I have always been curious about the dragon's teeth as shown in the animation. I wonder if it was just in the art style of the show that they look like one big tooth or plate, or that they actually are several different teeth like most mammals have.

Cool question DargonXKS - The "tooth bar" as we liked to call it during the production was one of the many great design choices made by Kevin. We all fell in love with it instantly and it was also easier to build and animate than individual teeth! Thanks!

Good one, Rob, and Kevin. I did not expect it, but it is fun to know. :)

The Furox - April 14, 2009 07:38 AM (GMT)
Yep, mistakes get made. And we now know that Artha's eye color change is a mistake as well. So much for all the debates we had about what it means. :) (Though we had talked about the possibility of it being a mistake.)

It's actually surprising that more mistakes aren't made. An animated series like this will have multiple episodes in production at the same time, all at various stages in the production pipeline. Some episodes will be in storyboard, while some are being animated, while others are having dialog recorded, while others are being edited and music being composed. It's quite a lot to keep track of and it definitely isn't hard to make mistakes, especially since Rob and Kevin are in Rhode Island while Nerd Corp is in Vancouver with a three hour time difference! :faint:

And it's interesting to know that Beau's body profile isn't supposed to be unique. I guess we can say that all the other dragons that look like him are always off-camera. :)

Arthapenn - April 14, 2009 11:30 AM (GMT)
Thanks, Rob and Kevin. I agree with Furox. Ummm, some of my oc dragons aren't that much unique either, if Beau's profile isn't unique.

The Furox - April 14, 2009 05:43 PM (GMT)
Oh, and I wanted to add my comments on the "tooth bar" answer as well. :) I always liked that design element as well. It just blends in and works so well with the sleek design of the dragons in general. If the dragons were modeled with individual sharp teeth like dragons are traditional drawn, then I think it would have looked very out of place.

By the way, Kevin is responsible for most of the designs we see in the show including The Furox which I think is some of his best work. ;) ^_^

tooth bar *snicker*
the dragons would kind of look weird if they had each individual tooth drawn
