Title: Yuletide
Description: Obscure fandom fic exchange

Sarah Frost - September 20, 2007 09:49 AM (GMT)
It's an end-of-year exchange of fics for fandoms with not nearly enough fic in them, very popular and run by Astolat, Elynross and Girlclone on LJ; I've nominated Ace Lightning this year as a rare fandom, and I'm sure DB would also qualify if anyone from here wants to join. (Storm Hawks is also on the list of nominations for this year.)

Yuletide nomination form, Yuletide FAQ, and Yuletide home page. Check out some of the stories; there's sure to be at least one fandom you know!

Yuletide_admin on LJ is the comm to follow for announcements; I'm going to sign up to it when they open for that.

Sorry for the double post, but I do have substantive material to add: Yuletide signups are now open, and will be only until the 18th--so it's a good idea to sign up soon. :D

The principle is, quite simply, an exchange: you write one fic, and you get one in return, carefully crafted by a secret Santa for a rare fandom that you really wish there was more fic in.

Recognize any fandoms? Dragon Booster, Storm Hawks, Ace Lightning, Babysitters Club, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Spiderman, Black Hole High, Tintin, Anne of Green Gables, Grease, The Parent Trap, The Princess Bride, Toy Story, Vampire Hunter D, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Incredibles, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Mary Poppins, Road to El Dorado, Treasure Planet, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Mulan? Here's the total list of fandoms people can request or offer to write; with something like a thousand on there, I'm sure there's something you recognize. :cookie:

The FAQ explains it all extremely well (the admin journal also has some great posts), but here's an example:

QUOTE
Hypothetical Fan: Ooh, requests!  I would just love a Dragon Booster fic, what with being on this forum and all, and--oh yeah, Storm Hawks is great too (I just LOVE the Ravess/Finn pairing!), and of course the ridiculously underappreciated Ace Lightning, and I can make four requests but for the purposes of this example I'll stick to those three fandoms.

Fandom: Dragon Booster
Characters: Any
Details: I love this show sooo much!  Anything with any characters would be great, but what I would especially love would be a story set in the first dragon-human war.

Fandom: Storm Hawks
Characters: Ravess and Finn
Details: Please could I have some nice fluff between them, or gen if you don't feel like writing romance? I don't like non-con or angst :( .

Fandom: Ace Lightning
Characters: Mark Hollander and Heather Hoffs
Details: Just gen, please, a bit of human storytelling to parallel the big excitement between the superheroes.

Now, the Hypothetical Offerer:

QUOTE
Hypothetical Offerer: Lessee, I can offer as many fandoms as I want as long as it's at least three, so I'll go with Dragon Booster, the Babysitters' Club and Star Wars, and because I'm pretty easygoing I'll just say I can write 'any' characters in each of them, although if I wanted I could limit myself to writing my favourites.

And now I get someone else's requests!  I get to pick which one out of their requests I want to fulfil, and although it might be only one of their requests is in a fandom I've actually heard of, I've only offered for things I'm pretty confident of writing.

Request #1--Yay, it's Dragon Booster!  Hmm, I'm unsure about writing something set purely in the first war, but the details are optional and they said 'any' characters, so I might write about Artha having a flashback to an experience of the first Dragon Booster.  I could also write about Word and Wulph's doomed affair since they said 'any', but I do want to make my recipient as happy as possible.

Request #2--What are these freaky things called Storm Hawks?!

Request #3--Ah, Ace Lightning, another fandom I do know about although I forgot to sign up to write it!  Mark and Heather--yeah, I can easily write about them in the same room, although I think I'm going to have to use Sam as well for the plot I have in mind.  I think I can probably produce the best story for my recipient from that prompt, so it'll be their third request that gets delivered to them on Christmas morn.  Yay, Yuletide!

So that's all there is to it. I'm definitely signing up, and aware that Dragon Booster's on the list; if you feel like doing something at Christmastime and getting something nice in return--join me. I have cookies. :cookie: Click!
