Yes, you all remember that in-progress picture I posted of Polarice and Scion? Well I know its been a while, I've been really busy, but I -finally- finished it, cheezy Dragon Booster background and all!
Its rather large, so heres a link to the image on Deviantart:

Wow, that's really nice looking! The shading does a great job of adding depth.
I'm curious how you created the background. Are you using Photoshop or something similar? If so, I'd appreciate it if you could briefly describe the technique so I can learn how to do something like that myself.

Actually, I cheated for the background and used Flash MX, it's better than photoshop for vector-type things.
I started with the purple background, and used the line tool to outline all the whitish areas and filled those in.
then I did the same for the dark areas, but I filled them with a gradient rather than hard color. I was then able to select the lines around them and delete them so that all you can see is the fill color. I did the same for all the between colors, first outlining all the rays, filling them in with different colors/gradients, and then deleting the lines. Thats why Flash is so handy :D
thanks for your comments all!

If you don't already have it, I suggest starting with GIMP, the free, open source Adobe Photoshop-like tool. You can download it from
www.gimp.org.
And anyone who's in school can get a substantial discount on the full version of Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash through places like
www.academicsuperstore.com.

Well, I actually was just fiddling around with photoshop :P I shaded with an airbrush that had a texture applied. (Don't ask me, I discover new realms of photoshop with every picture I do  ) And after shading and highlighting I applied a Gaussian Blur, and then blurred by hand any other spaces that needed it.
On the other hand, I messed up with Polarice because I had the shading for all the different colors on the same layer, and the blended together when I blurred the layer and thats why she looks so washed out.

Honestly, and I'm not saying this is at all a good thing, I can't afford them. Both of the programs used for this picture were downloaded
Sad but true...
On the other hand, thanks for all the positive comments, all muchly appreciated!
