Dragon in our futuer
By Alisse helped by :Slazzsar
She was a regular farm girl, who lived in Canada, in New Brunswick to be exact, her hade just turned 16 on May 25th, it was now the starting of summer (July 1st 2020).
The sun shone down heating every thing its rays touched,
“Come on Amber pepere is leaving!” Her older sister called out for her horses back, every one had got to gather for Canada day,
“Coming! Just give me a second” Amber yelled from the barn,
“Come on Blacky let me put your bridle on!” the horse shook his head playfully "Please don’t do this today!” she said moving her hand and bridle to the horses head, & once again he tossed his head. She sighed out of frustration pushing her long brown hair back that hade fallen out of her pony tail. Finally she gave up.
“Alisse can you come out and help me!! Blacky is acting up again!!”
“Hang on I’m coming!” her older sister called out from behind there grand fathers’ wagon. She tied her horse to the wagon and came trotting to the barn “What seems to be the problem?” she asked.
“Blacky won’t let me put his bridle on.”
Alisse stood there for a second.
“I got the perfect thing! Stay here!”
“Ok, where would I go?” Amber laughed.
Then Alisse trotted out of the barn to the Tack shed,
“I wish for once you would let me put your bridle on, just once!” the horse tossed his head in the crosses tie.
“I’m back with my secret weapon! Corn syrup. A horse can not resist it!” she said putting some on Blacky's bit "There now take some on your fingers’ and offer it to him.”
Amber looked at her sister and nodded holding out her middle and index finger, Alisse pored some of the sticky syrup on amber’s fingers, once she hade some on her fingers’ she turned to her horse.
“Here Blacky, I have some thing good for you!! It’s really yummy !” she stuck her hand out to his mouth he jerked his head back and slowly brought it back and licked the syrup off ,
“Not take the bit in your hand’s and give it too him.”
Amber picked up the bridle off the floor and held it in her hands, with the corn syrup on it Blacky gladly took,
“There now lets’ get a move on before he leaves with out us!” Alisse said hurrying out of the barn,
“Come on Blacky.” she said picking up her helmet off the floor. She placed it on her head and buckled the strap.
“There.” she picked up his reigns and unbuckled his halter, and led him out of the barn.
The bright summer sun blinded her eyes, so she put her free hand over her eyes and blinked a couple times until her vision came back.
“Hurry up slow poke!” her other sister called from her horse.
“I’m hurrying, I’m hurrying.”
That was Jemm her other older sister …how many sister’s does she have you may ask? Well there’s Justine the oldest at 30 years old, has a her birthday in August, then there's Alisse, 29 going to be 30 on the 22nd, and then there was Jemm who is 19. And of course, Amber who is the youngest of them all.
“Here I’ll hold him.” Justine said putting her 3 year old daughter on the ground.
“Thanks, you know how he can be some times.” She said tossing the reigns over his head.
“Yup and today must be one of those days.” Justine said grabbing him at the bit.
Amber put her foot in the stirrup and hoisted her self up using the saddle horn and a clump of his main.
He side stepped away from the weight she put in the stirrup, she quickly swing her other leg over and grabbed the reigns jerking him back,
“Smarten up!” She said pulling the reigns making him back up,
“There good boy.” she said patting his long black neck.
“You got him?” Justine asked stepping towards her.
“Yup!”
“Ok then.” She went over and picked up her daughter, “its’ time we get in the wagon isn’t it?” and she took her seat beside her husband.
“Is every body ready?” The old man asked.
“Yup.” every one said.
“Ok then lets go.” With a flick of his reigns the team of horses pulled off carrying the whole family.
“Come on Blacky.” Amber said giving her horse a little kick but he stood frozen staring into the woods. Amber looked ahead at the wagon as it got further away with her family.
“Come on Blacky!” She said giving him a harder kick, but still no reaction. Then she noticed his gaze.
“What’s’ out there boy?” she said looking into the wood’s.
Then she saw it a large dark form ‘It can’t be a moose it’s too big …’ she thought ‘Is it a dragon?’ she always hade a good imagination like Alisse but this was ridiculous. The only dragon around here was her dragon booster action figures. She peered in to the wood trying to get a good view on this strange animal.
“Amber is every thing alright?” Alisse asked riding up on P.J. her horse,
“Hum, what?” Amber turned to see her sister beside her.
“Does Blacky not want to go?”
“Ahh yeah he saw …” she looked back to the woods where she saw the dark form was, but it wasn’t there any more.
“What is it?” Alisse asked looking in the direction of where amber was staring.
“Nothing.” Alisse looked at Amber’s face, for she could tell that there was some thing wrong but she didn’t know what...
“Do you want me to take him by the bridle and lead him forward?”
“No I’m going to try again …he has to start listening to me some day.” She picked up his rains again “Come on Blacky.” she said touching him with her heels, he moved forward.
“Awesome!” Alisse said turning P.J. around “He already starting to listen to you!”
“Yeah I guess so.” she said looking back at the woods.
“Well I’ll beat you back to the wagon.” Alisse said leaning forward in her saddle,
“No fair you got a head start!” Amber yelled “lope Blacky.” she commanded him, and for once he obeyed happily

Chapter 2
The sun had set and every one went home. Amber was setting on her bed, fiddling with her Mc Donald’s dragon booster toys.
“Had it really been a dragon?” she asked her self.
“What's this talk about Dragons? “ Alisse walked in.
“What are you doing here? I thought you went home?”
“I did but I came back because I wanted to talk to you.” she said entering the room and shutting the door behind her.
“About what?” Amber asked suspiciously.
“Well, you’ve been acting weird all day …I was wondering if you wanted to talk about it.” Alisse said sitting on the bed in front of her. Amber looked at Alisse then at the dragon she held in her hand. It was Beau, her favorite dragon of her collection with Artha flying off his back on a fake mage stream.
“Its nothing.” Amber replied still looking at the dragon.
“Ok then, what were you saying about a dragon earlier?”
Amber shot her head up and looked at her older sister. Alisse wasn’t like her other sisters. She was always there for her and cared about her and her feelings. Maybe it was because they looked the same at a young age. Although Alisse was older, when Amber was borne if you compared a picture of Alisse when she was a baby and Amber you couldn’t tell them apart. Maybe it was the compassionate heart they shared, or their great imagination.
“I’ll tell you as long as you don’t laugh at me for thinking this.” Amber said looking down again.
“I promise! On Nancy’s grave.” Alisse said with a faint smile, thinking back on her dearly loved horse.
“Ok then ... you remember today when Blacky wouldn’t go?”
“Yeah …”
“Well he was looking at some thing in the wood’s …it was big!” she said spreading out her arms. “How big?” Alisse asked leaning in. “Bigger than a moose.” “There’s nothing bigger than a moose around here.” her sister said leaning back. “I know. It almost looked like…oh never mind.”
“What, what did it look like?” “I thought it looked like a dragon …but dragons’ don’t exist.” she said tossing the toy crossed the bed,
“Maybe they do maybe they don’t … who knows.”
“Yeah what ever.”
“Tomorrow go and see if there was any tracks.” She smiled “I have to go though. Can’t Wait till it's pitch black …P.J. doesn’t like the dark very much.” “You rode here?” “Well yeah, I only live what 3 houses down …and besides he needed the exercise. I have to go …remember if you need any one to talk to I’m always home. It kind of goes with the stay at home horse training gig .” she laughed.
“Yeah I have to go to bed any way.”
“Ok then I’ll see you tomorrow.” she smiled as she left the room, leaving Amber alone with her thoughts. She looked out her window.
“Amber time for bed!” her mom called. “I know, I know.” she hollered back, grabbing her P-J’s from under her pillow. She looked out her window once more and pulled down her blinds and got ready for bed.
---------------------------
The next morning she woke with the rising of the sun (5:45 am)
"It’s time to get out and do some chores." she said looking at her alarm clock that hade not yet gone off. She did her regular routine: made her bed, changed in to her holly jeans and a T-shirt and a thin pair of socks, and threw her hair in a pony tail with out brushing it.
Once she was dressed to her satifaction, Amber quietly krept out of her room and down the hall trying not to wake her parents.
When she made it to the kitchen she started to walk regularly. She put a couple pieces of toast in the toaster for her breakfast and went to the fridge to get some orange juice. She looked in and saw that there was: milk, pickled beats, Pepsi, butter, salad dressing, fresh carrots, other assorted fruit and veggie’s, and way at the back there was the juice.
She reached her long arm in and reached back.
“Got it!” she said as she pulled on the handle of the juice.
As she pulled it out it hit the butter dish knocking it off the shelf. She quickly grabbed it with her left hand. Living on a horse farm gave her fast reflexes.
"That was close." she thought placing it back on the counter.
When she shut the door there was there family dog Pete sitting there holding his bowl and wagging his tail. His thick black long furry coat hide him in the dark corners’.
“I suppose you want you breakfast to?” she said, taking his bowl from him with her free hand. He barked.
“Quite we don’t want to wake any one else.” Amber said walking to the dog food bag, which she pulled out and placed next to the juice on the counter. “Now if you wait patiently you’ll have your food faster.”
He sat there and wagged his tail as she scooped up some food in his blow and placed it on the floor at her feet.
“There you go.” The dog trotted to his bowl and dug right in his breakfast. Amber looked out the kitchen window at the yellow morning sky. It looked to be another hot summer day was approaching.
She reached for a glass from the cupboard and sat it next to the juice
“Ding!” Amber turned at the familiar sound to see her toast was ready.
She went and picked them up. She then tossed them from hand to the other in a clumsily manner as the toast burned her. She quickly blue on them cooling them off, and sat them on the cutting board. Amber then grabbed the butter from the cupboard and went to the dish washer to find a clean butter knife, as she knew that there wasn't one in the drawer.
“What are you doing up this early?” her mom asked walking in with her blue house coat on. “Well it's going to be a great day and I want to get as much of is as I can.” Amber said turning around with a butter knife in hand. “Well you could have kept it down. We're trying to sleep here.” She yawned, leaning on the side of the fridge.
“Oops, sorry... Was it Pete who woke you? I tried to keep him quiet.”
“I know he doesn’t really care about who‘s sleeping.”
“No he doesn’t” Amber chuckled while buttering her toast.
“So what are your plans for today?” “Well," Amber started, "I’m going to feed and get in a early ride seeing that it's going to be one of those hot day’s. Then I’ll put them out ..Umm after that I think I’ll go see what John, Patrick and them are doing. Y'know, if they have no real plans I’ll see if they want to come for a swim down by the brook-“
“What about Jemm? Does she have any thing to do today? Are you going to invite her?” “I don’t think she’ll really want to come out with me...She probably has her own plans to hang with Carissa and Laura to go to the mall probably....” she rolled her eyes. “Well don’t forget to ask.” “I don’t see why! She’ll probably say no, she hate’s me!” Amber said throwing up her arms.
For a moment there was a silence. The only thing herd was Pete eating.
“So what did Alisse want yesterday?” Amber started to butter her other piece of toast. “Nothing.” she sighed. "I guess that’s not my total plan after feeding the horses. I’ll go check for tracks." She thought, taking a bite of her toast and washing it down with the juice. “Well I better leave you to your breakfast so you can get to all of those plans!” her mom said leaving.
Amber quickly swallowed down the toast and chugged down the juice.
Moving to the door she pulled on her rubber boots and krept out side, letting the dog go out before her. Once she got outside she ran down he steps to the barn , the sweet summer air filling her lung’s. As she grew closer the smell of horses and hay filled the air.
“2 of the smells are in the world.” She said walking with her eye’s closed. Pete barked. “What are the 3 you ask? Well that’s of a leather saddle.” She said laughing. When Amber got to the front of the barn she slid the door opened, the smell horse and manure fell over her like a wave of water. The gentle sound of nickering filled the barn as the horses greeted her.
“Go morning to you to!” she said laughing. Amber went to the wall and flicked the switch and the light’s came on. In only a few minute’s she hade cleaned and fed all the horses, “Time to go look for those tracks.” She said to Pete who was sleeping on a bunch of loose hay. She went out the back door that was closest to the woods.
The sun was just peeking over the trees giving just enough light for her to see in the dark woods. Looking at her watch she thought about how she wanted to make this search quick, so she could get to real stuff. None of this imagery dragon stuff, even though her sense of adventure hopped there would be something there.
Her watch said it was almost 6:30 (6:26) so she raced over the manure pile to the woods jumping over stumps and roots. Her Rubber boots made her jumps ungraceful, thumping with each step. Amber went to jump over a stump but the toe of her boot got caught and she fell stumbling, falling on a rock.

Chapter 3
When she opened her eyes, she had a mouth-full of old leaves that had fallen from the trees the year before. She tried to move her foot but it was caught on some thing. Amber turned her head slightly to see what it was but turned back as a sharp pain ran through her head and neck.
She turned it the other way to see a rock laying on the ground in front of her. She laid her hand on her neck and tried to pull on her foot again but it was stuck tight. Amber groaned out of frustration and a bit out of pain. She sighed and lay flat on her stomach. After a moment she felt a strong tug on her foot that pulled it loose from it’s stuck situation. She pulled her self to a sitting position and looked up. There standing over her was a mighty dragon his head held high. She stared, mouth opened.
"Could this be true? Am I seen things’? Is this a dream?" Amber asked her self, staring in awe at this wonderous creature. “Woof! Woof! ” Pete came barking behind her. She turned her head quickly to she the black haired dog running at her, barking full force at this new Creature that stood over his owner. When Amber looked back the dragon was gone, leaving nothing but his large foot prints. She sat on her heels in amazement.
She knew this couldn’t be seeing things, Pete saw it too! "Should I follow the tracks? What if I did would the dragon be friendly? Well it didn’t try and eat me but what if he/she just ran off because of Pete?? Nope I’m just going to pass on this dangerous adventure!" she said turning back to the barn.
“Be sides, what if I did and it wasn’t dangerous? What would I do if I found him again?” She asked Pete as she walked back to the barn. “It’s a perfect time to clear me head time to grow up from this dragon business.” “Grow up, how come? Let me guess you didn’t find what you were looking for?” there Jemm stood at the barn door. “What are you talking about?” Amber asked trying to cover.
“Oh, you know completely what I’m talking about. I heard you and Alisse talking about.” She smiled slyly. “How did you here that? Were you eavesing dropping again?” “Maybe. I wouldn’t tell you even if I did.”
“Well if you excuse me, I have some thing I want to do …what are you doing up this early any way?” “This early? It’s almost 10:00?!” Amber looked at her watch. Her sister was right, it was 10:00.
“Mom sent me out here looking for you.” she seemed a little concerned.
"How long was I out for? It didn’t seem that long." Amber had to finish this and fast. She knew her sister just wouldn’t under stand.
“Oh yeah I went for a walk in the wood’s before my ride.” she smiled she wasn’t very good at lying. Jemm looked at her for a moment.
“Did you fall? Your knee is full of mud and you have leaves in your hair.”
Amber looked at her self. She never noticed. “Uh yeah I was running and I tripped.” ‘At least that wasn’t a lie.’ she thought to herself.
“Oh, ok. I’ll tell mom I found you I guess…what are you up to today?” “Oh a bit of riding. I’ll go see the gang see what they want to do.” “Ok. Mom wanted me to take you to the mall but if you have plans that’s ok.” she smiled and ran off. Amber slumped and wiped the sweat from her brow with her sleeve.
She walked to Blacky's stall and lead him to the cross tie. Once he was secure she went over to this pad that was hanging on the wall next to the other saddle. It hade a girt strap and strips on it. It was a bear back saddle that she liked to use in the mornings. It gave Amber more of a connection with her horse than with a regular saddle, usually a large leather saddle and a thick pair of pads the separated them both.
But with her bare back saddle it was just a thin lair of a fabric like pad separated them but she felt so much better than using a regular one, Which was alot lighter and gave him alot more movement.
With a quick flip it was on his back. He stood there quietly and she tightened it. After that she quickly went over and grabbed his bridle. Amber just wasn’t brave enough to give him the hack more. That would be just way too much for him to play with.
“Ok now here comes the bridle.” She said walking over to his left side and lifted the bridle to his face. He quickly grabbed the bit like as if his had been waiting for her to come. “What’s with you this morning?” she giggled. With that, Amber pulled the bridle up and over his ears. After that she grabbed her helmet and lead him out of the barn.
“Now, lets ride!” she said swinging up on to his back. She gave him a slight nudge and they were off to the field running with the wind, going for an enjoyable ride. Like this she could just clear her mind push every thing out and just concentrate on her riding. As she rode, the summer wind played with her hair, whipping it all around as she rode over ditches and through the field.
After a bout an hour long ride, Amber took Blacky back to the barn. it was around 11:20. She took him and the other saddle horses and put them out in the field and the Draft horses in the corral next to the barn. After that she went back to the barn and cleaned the rest of the stall’s.
“Hey, where have you been?” She quickly turned around to see the gang: John, Patrick, Marissa, and Myah. “Oh I umm….” “You can tell us after. Come on, weren't we supposed to get to the brook and have a picnic there then go swimming?” “Yeah I know …I was just a little late getting going today.” “I told you she didn’t over sleep; she’s always up before her alarm.” It was true Amber was always up before her alarm, no matter how late she was up.
“So what did you pack?” Patrick asked thinking of his stomach. “Well I was going to bring the desert; strawberry short cake with fresh biscuits and strawberries from the garden.” “Oh that sound’s so good!!” “Yeah but I didn’t have time to get it all together.” “That’s why I’m your mother, and I know your and your friend’s taste bud’s.”
“Oh hi Mrs. Smith.” “Patrick, how many time’s have I told you, you can call me Linda.” She said with a smile. “Well here’s your desert have a nice time guys!” she said, handing Amber her basket. “Thanks mom.” she said taking the basket. “Come on guys, I have the perfect spot!”
“Ok I’m coming!” Patrick said almost sticking to Amber like honey in the hot summer sun. “Hey Wait for us!”

well heres' another chapter!!
Chapter 4
“So you said you've seen a dragon?” Patrick asked cleaning the last bit of his dessert off of his plate. “Yeah. I know you think I’m crazy but I’m serious!! There are even tracks!!” “Really? Where did you see it?” asked Marissa. “Behind the barn in the woods.” “Well, that explains the dirt and leaves.” Myah said putting the foam plate in garbage bag.
“Are you sure It’s not just not your imagination?” John asked leaning against the tree he sat under. His dirty blonde hair shined from the sun peeking through the branches. His muscles rippled under his faded black shirt. His blue eyes sparkled leaving any girl breathless. Even Amber, for every time she looked at him she could feel her cheeks turn red but then cool because she would never have a chance with him. He loved Myah not her.
“Pete saw it to!” she snapped. “Oh, some one’s a little on the edge today!” Patrick teased. Amber glared at him, giving an evil look. Patrick cringed. One thing to know: "Don’t get Amber mad"! Then brought back her sweet smile. “Yeah I guess your right. It’s such a hot day...Let's goes swimming now!” she said standing up.
“The water is probably dirty and cold!” Myah cried. Amber just shook her head. Myah sounded like one of Jemms friend’s. “Oh come on it’ll be fun!” “Nope. You guys can go, I’ll just sit here and tan ok?” she said laying on her back with a pair of sun glasses on. Amber looked over at John, who smiled and nodded to her. “Get her!” he cried. “What? AAAh!!” she said getting up and running deeper in the woods.
Amber quickly pulled off her boots and socks and ran after her through the woods as sure footed as a deer and just as fast jumping over logs, weaving through trees, ducking under branches until she passed Myah and swerved in front and stopped her.
“Ah!!!” she screamed then laughed. She then turned and started to run back when she ran into John and Patrick. “Oh no.” she moaned as John grabbed her arms. “Patrick, get her legs! we'll throw her in the water!”
“Ah no you will not!” she kicked at her older brother, who just jumped back. Amber lunged forward grabbing Myah’s furiously swinging legs.
“Come on let’s get her to the brook!” “Ok I’ll take those donkey’s legs from you.” Patrick teased Amber and Myah. “Go ahead. I don’t want to out do you again.” She teased back. Myah stopped kicking.
“Oh she got you good!” “Yeah just be quiet. She’s next after you!” “Not if you can’t catch me or I go in first!” John looked at Amber as she dashed away. “Go after her Patrick! I can handle Myah! Go, go!” Patrick let go of Myah's legs and ran after her. darting through the trees and stumbling over stumps as Amber jumped and glided over them. This was her home, her territory. She knew these woods like the back of her hand.
Her hair falling from her pony tail. She ran until she got to the waters edge of a tall steep bank from where she could see john holding Myah over the water her legs kicking and flying all over the place . Finally, he dropped her in the water and looked up at Amber.
“Patrick hurry! I found her!” Amber heard tree branches breaking from the woods behind her. She quickly jumped up into a tree that was over her head. From there, she watched the woods. a few seconds later, Patrick came rushing out of the woods. He looked around but saw nothing. He walked to the edge and looked down.
“That water looks cold. I’m not going in.” Amber smiled and swung down from the tree branch, hitting him in the butt causing him to fall into the water. “Ahh!” “Have a nice bath!” she yelled as he splashed into the water. She laughed as he poked his head out of the water. “Amber I’ll get you for that!!!” "Oh, you will you?”
She heard another branch break in the woods, so she quickly jumped back in to the tree and waited looking deep into the trees. Soon, John came creeping out as if to push Amber into the water. He stopped and looked around noticing that there was no one around. “Patrick?” he called.
“Down here, John.” Patrick called from the water. John walked over and looked down. “What are you doing down there? Where’s Amber?” Patrick pointed at the tree. John turned around to see what he was pointing at when Amber swung down and hit him off the edge into the water. He turned him self into a diving position and entered the water next to Patrick with a loud splash. A moment later he came up next to Patrick.
“That’s’ what you meant.” he said turning to Patrick and laughed. They turned and looked back up. “So, are you coming in or going to stay up there?” Amber grinned. “Just keep out of the way I’ll be down in a minute.” She turned around and ran back to the water and jumped off the edge diving in perfectly in front of the boys. “She’s good.” Patrick admitted.
“I guess she beats you at everything.” Myah chuckled, swimming over to them with Marissa by her side. Amber poked her head up out of the water next to Myah. “Maybe, but she can’t out swim me.” John said lunging over to Amber who quickly ducked and went under the water. John dived after her and splashed Myah, who then splashed Patrick who splashed back ending in a splash fight.

any way here it is if any one is still reading this fic.
Chapter 5
It was around 1:00 and every one had dried off and left. Patrick went home to help with the chores, Myah Jane (MJ for short) when home, as she had to get ready to go to visit a friend, while Marissa and John went to get their horses to go with Amber to check out a new trail at Alisse's. They had traveled down it for 3 hours the other week and found no end. Today was going to be fun, she thought as Blacky moved about underneath her.
“Easy boy. They’ll be here soon!” she reassured. She looked up the drive way but couldn’t see any thing past the line of trees. "Maybe I should go up to the road and wait for them there," she thought. She clicked her tongue and Blacky move forward with a jolt. He just wanted to run but she healed him back and got him to walk. When she reached the end of her driveway, she was relived to see Marissa and John coming.
“You don’t have to wait any longer,” she said happily. She loved riding with her friends - it beat riding alone. John and Marissa trotted their horses past Amber and Blacky. Then John moved his horse into a lope. “Try and see if you can catch up,” he yelled back to amber. They always raced to this drive way next to a field. She shook her head and nudged Blacky into a slow lope which was actually pretty fast, as that was the way Justine liked her horses - fast. She leaned forward as she saw John give Champ a kick to go faster. Amber was already catching up to them. She passed Marissa with a smile.
“I’m not racing so I’ll see you there in a bit.” she yelled as Amber passed her. Marissa liked to ride not too fast but not too slow and she had a horse who was the same, liked to laze along and was usually a good calm horse, which made her happy. Amber pressed her heels a little harder into Blacky's side and he sped up. John looked back and saw that Amber was closing in on him. He kicked his heals further into his horse's side - Champ was now at a full out gallop, while Blacky was at a fast lope. Champ was a pure bread quarter horse, perfect for shows, barrel racing, pole bending, cattle penning, cutting, and reining.
He had short pasterns, small barrel not long in the body, not perfect for full out racing while, Blacky was a mix of thorobread and quarter horse. He hade long, slender legs and a long body, making him perfect for racing. Amber looked over to John and smiled. As she slowly gained the lead and passed him, she could here him yelling at Champ. “Yeah faster come on!” he ordered.
Amber shook her head. She was sure Champ would have gone faster if he could. He loved to please John, but John would never notice it. Amber looked ahead at the drive way that their races usually ended at. She was going to win once again. She smiled - she loved the wind blowing in her hair, the smell of horse filling her lungs, and living where she did, a place where hardly no one drove down the road, which made it perfect for horse back riding.
Suddenly something caught her eye in the corner of the field. It looked like it could be that dragon again. She pulled back on her reins, forgetting how fast she was going. Blacky stumbled with the sudden jerk of the reins, and his feet slid on the pavement. He finally got some grip and stopped short, thrusting Amber forward. The saddle horn dug into her gut and she let her reins go as the wind was knocked right out of her. She gasped but no relief came. Her eyes began to water. Her lungs begged for air, and then John and Marissa came up. John leaned over and pulled Amber in a upright position. She gasped again, bringing air back into her lungs. She coughed and inhaled again.
“Are you okay?” Marissa asked, almost most shaking. Amber turned and looked at Marissa, then at John and she started to laugh. John and Marissa exchanged looks, then turned back to Amber, who finally could speak.
“You should have seen your faces,” She was able to get out. John just rolled his eyes and shook his head and Marissa giggled. “Why did you stop so suddenly?” John asked, being serious. Amber snapped up and looked into the field - the shape she had seen was gone.
“Did you guys see it? It was the dragon!” she said, pointing to where she saw it last. John raised his eyebrows.
“No, we didn’t, because it's not real. It's just your childish imagination running wild once again,” John snapped angrily. Amber looked over at Marissa and she shook her head. Amber knew what she saw even if they didn’t believe her, but that was John for you. He grew up way to fast, always being so serious and never took Amber serious enough.
Amber looked at John, just giving him an evil glare. How could he not believe her? She balled her hands up around her reins tightly, holding herself back from yelling her head off at him. He did the same, and they were locked in a gaze nether one of them was breaking first. Finally, Marissa cut in, hoping neither of them would be mad at her, but she didn’t want to stay there all day.
“If you guys are going to stand here all day, I’m going to leave,” she said, hoping they would break away. John kept on staring. finally, Amber gave in and got Blacky to move away first, deciding she would be the bigger person though she wouldn’t say it out loud because it would start the fight all over again.
John waited a while, letting Marissa go between him and Amber. That short ride seemed to take forever with the silence, as no one spoke. Once they got to Alisse's drive way, Amber trotted Blacky to the training pen where Alisse was hard at work trying to teach a new horse to stop bucking when the rider asked it to lope, and by the way things were going it looked good. Alisse glanced away from the horse and saw Amber ridding up. She stopped the horse and brought him to the gate.
“Hey you, stranger, how was your picnic?” she asked as John and Marissa rode up behind her.
“It was good,” Marissa finally replied. Alisse smiled.
“So you guys checking out that new trail?” she asked, leaning on the saddle horn.
Amber nodded.
"Is the fencer on?” she asked, moving to the gate the led to the field. Alisse shrugged.
“Not sure if it’s plugged in and it's an old fencer. You’ll have to check it.”
Everyone glanced at each other, none wanting to get off and touch it.
“Well, I’m not going. Amber it's your sister's trial and fence. You check it,” Marissa said, looking at Amber. She sighed and jumped off Blacky. She tossed her reins to Marissa and walked over to the fence. She decided to play a little trick on them, as she knew already what would happen when she touched the fence. She glanced over her shoulder, noticing them all watching her, wondering what was going to happen. She touched it and pretended to get electrocuted, screaming and flailing.
“Amber!” Marissa gasped. John shared her shocked and worried expression.
“Oh come on Amber, let it up. You can't fool me.” Alisse knew Amber well enough to know that she wasn’t getting shocked and was just fooling them.
“Aww, but did you see their faces? It was priceless!” Amber laughed. John rolled his eyes.
“So is the fence on or not?” he snapped.
“ I don’t know. I touch the fences and I don’t get shocked.”
“Yeah right.” he growled.
“No it's true, right Alisse?” Who nodded?
"Amber and I have that weird thing where we can grab hold of the fence if it's on and not get shocked.” Alisse said, getting off her horse and opening the gate. John rolled his eyes and saw that Amber had grabbed hold of the fence with her hand. She didn’t even flinch. He dropped his reins and walked over to the fence. He looked at Amber then slowly reached out and touched the fence. Pain shot through his hand, and he quickly pulled it back as he got shocked.
“It's on,” he said, walking back to his horse while rubbing his injured hand. Amber smiled, thinking, "maybe now he’ll listen to me more often."
Alisse turned to the barn.
“Hey James! Can you unplug the fence to the west pasture?” she called. They all watched as a man popped his head out the barn door.
“The kid’s here for their trail ride?” he hollered back.
“Yup.”
“Okay. I’ll bring the surprise too!”
Amber looked at her older sister. What surprise? She wondered as she saw James coming down the path. He smiled at Alisse she smiled back. They had gotten married 5 years ago, and they still looked at each other the same way since.
“So what’s this surprise?" Marissa pried. James looked at Alisse, wondering if he should tell or if she wanted too.
“Well..” he started, “we thought with all these trails, that you would refuse to have an adult attend with you. We figured we should get some way to keep in touch since our last plan didn’t work.”
“We figured that if Cell phones didn’t work, maybe some high-tech police force type walk-talkies would.” Alisse finished. James handed them each one and showed them how to use it.
“Wow this is awesome!” Amber exclaimed.
“Yup. We have the main piece in the house a small one in the barn so if you need anything, we should be able to hear you wherever you are.” Alisse said, smiling.
“But you will have to leave them here and take good care of them while you have them. Those things weren’t cheap.” James laughed. Amber opened the gate, then gave James and Alisse both a hug before re-mounting Blacky. They waved good buy and rode off to explore the new trail.

Chapter 6
Amber led the way across yet another stream – this was turning out to be an awesome trail! They had gone through three streams, found an old cave, and saw the tracks of moose and deer. The trees created a canopy high above giving them lots of shade and they still saw no end to it. It seemed to go on forever. Amber and John had started to speak again and not in anger, which made Marissa happy. It was turning out to be a good day. Finally they came to a fork in the trail.
“What way should we go?” Marissa asked, looking down one of the trails.
“I think we should start heading back. If we keep going it’ll be too dark to find our way back,” Amber said, starting to turn Blacky back down the trail.
“I think we should keep going,” John said, moving Champ to block Amber’s way.
“Excuse me?” she asked as she glared at him. What was he trying to do?
“I think we should keep going. We’ve come this far – no use going back yet. Besides, one of these trails must end soon.”
“I think we should head back, too. Amber’s right. If we keep going, it’ll be too dark to find our way back,” Marissa agreed. John looked at her, giving her an evil glare.
“Look, it won’t take that long. Besides, I think you’re just a chicken.”
“I’m not a chicken! I just don’t want to get lost in the woods at night.”
“See, you’re a chicken.”
“No, I’m not!”
With all the yelling, Marissa’ horse, May, started to back up one of the trails.
“Get up there,” her owner said, giving her a nudge.
“Fine. You girls head back. I’ll go down this trail,” John said, moving Champ down the opposite trail on where Marissa and May were standing at.
“Arrg, you are so stubborn!” Amber yelled at him with frustration.
“Yeah, I get that from you!”
Suddenly, something snapped in the woods, spooking the horses. Amber reached out and patted Blacky.
“It’s okay boy, it was just a branch,” she murmured soothingly. Her horse’s nostrils were flaring. Something was up. Marissa’s horse May started to prance fearfully. Just then, a cougar leapt out of the woods and snarled at May and Marissa. The horse reared up high and turned on its haunches before taking off down one of the trails. The cougar then looked coldly at Amber and Blacky, who backed into a tree. Champ reared in panic as well. John tried desperately to hang on but fell to the ground as his horse took off down the other trail. With a growl, the loin then took off into the woods in the direction of where Marissa was heading.
Amber gave Blacky a jab in the rib to get him to move forward away from the tree. She turned to John, who was still in shock and sitting still upon the ground.
“Get Champ! I’ll go find Marissa!” she yelled and before he could appose she gave Blacky another kick. The black horse then sprang into a lope down the trails where Marissa and the lion were heading.
The trail started out wide but slowly narrowed. Amber looked ahead and saw Marissa’s horse’s tracks in the moss, letting her feel great relief that she was going the right way.
The sticks and fallen boughs began to rub against her boot. Branches started to pull at her hair and face. Amber lowered her body, trying to see better without being scratched to pieces. Soon there were numerous branches all around them scratching against Blacky’s and her sides. She could tell that Blacky wanted to turn back but Amber knew that Marissa could be in trouble and if something happened to Marissa, Amber would be in trouble like she had been with the last incident when Marissa fell and broke her arm after Amber tried to get her and May to jump a log. Amber wasn’t just grounded for a week. Oh no. She could not see John and Marissa, either. They weren’t allowed to ride with her until just a week ago.
Amber was just about to stop and change her course. She wasn’t even sure if they were still on this trail. Finally they came out to an opening and she saw May ‘s reins caught to a tree branch. The horse was rearing and neighing with terror. Her eyes were wide. Amber followed her gaze, looking around. Not far off, there was Marissa laying on the ground next to a pile of rocks.
