Title: Art Policy
Description: Read before posting any art.
LightningFlash - July 8, 2007 07:02 AM (GMT)
This is a policy clarification note for art plagiarism. Please note that the forum standards for art plagiarism differ to the forum standards for fiction plagiarism.
The main problem the forum is concerned about is the possibility of being sued by Alliance Atlantis/The Story Hat due to someone claiming modified screenshots as their own work. This forum is also concerned with each of our artists’ rights over their own work and therefore is against all forms of art theft.
Please report any wrongful use of art. Each artist here deserves to say what they allow other people to do with their art.
Issues discussed:
- Screenshot Art in Threads
- Edited Art in Threads
- Original Art in Threads
- Banners and Avatars
Issue: Screenshot Art in Threads| QUOTE |
I have a thread called “My Art” and I have edited screenshots in there!
Bad. Screenshots should not be called “your art”.
QUOTE
I have a thread called “My Screenshot Art” and I have edited screenshots in there, or I have a thread called “My Art” and I have noted which pieces in there are screenshots.
Entirely acceptable. Have a nice day!
QUOTE
I have manipulated screenshots that are clearly labelled ‘Original screenshot copyright Alliance Atlantis/The Story Hat.
This is perfect. Have a cookie and a nice day.
Issue: Edited Art in Threads
QUOTE
I’ve used portions of someone else’s artwork or edited screenshot, traced it, coloured it, edited it, or otherwise made use of someone else’s work.
This is edited art.
QUOTE
I credit the original artist, but I don’t have permission.
Bad. You need both permission and credit to publish someone’s edited artwork.
QUOTE
I have permission to edit this artwork and I have given credit to the artist.
Very good!
QUOTE
I credit the original artist, and I don’t need her permission because her website says anyone who gives credit can use her artwork.
Very good! The artist gets to say who can use her work.
QUOTE
I’m colouring in a template and have credited the artist.
Templates are usually intended to be used by others, so permission will often not be necessary, but permission should be asked if the artist’s intentions are in any respect unclear.
Issue: Original Art in Threads
QUOTE
I’ve put up art drawn and coloured completely by me in my art thread.
Bravo! This is the main purpose of this forum.
Issue: Banners and Avatars
Banners and avatars are assumed by default to be used with due permission.
QUOTE
I used a screenshot to make my banner and avatar.
Banners and avatars are not being labelled as your art, so we will probably not get sued over this.
QUOTE
There’s no space to say my avatar’s a screenshot anyway.
Quite right, and we understand. Go on thy merry way.
QUOTE
I’m using a banner someone else made for me.
Bannermakers often attach their own credit to specifically made banners, so credit is nice although not compulsory. Try to use only banners the original creator has offered to all.
QUOTE
I’m using an avatar someone else made.
Again, credit is nice if you can figure out where to put it, but not compulsory. Try to make sure the artist has no objections to it being used if there is any doubt.
QUOTE
I’m using a banner or avatar that I edited from someone else’s artwork.
You need to give credit and have permission, please, just like when using edited art in threads.
QUOTE
I made banners and avatars, but I only want those I authorise to use them.
You’re the artist. Private message
the admin if a user without permission refuses to remove your artwork from their profile.
That’s about it. Feel free to ask any further questions. Hopefully these examples will clarify forum policies on the use of screenshots and other people’s artworks.

well said, I believe you have covered everything in that one ^^
And I have a question, Can I post up a couple of dragon templates (not exactly dragon booster dragons) that I drew so that users here can color them in as if their dragon booster character was a real dragon? or is that concidered unrelated?
Thanks LF <3

That should be fine. :) If you're not sure that they're DB-related then you can post links instead.

Hmmm, Interesting. I will definetly just do my own original art. But this is handy to know for future references.
Penny Dreadful - August 14, 2007 11:52 PM (GMT)
Out of curiosity, is there anywhere we can post original art on the forum not related to dragons or DB?
LightningFlash - August 18, 2007 07:01 AM (GMT)
Nope. That's what Places like
deviantArt are for. :)
Penny Dreadful - August 22, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)

Actually, no, I don't want to post my own DB fanart, as I already have. If you, however, would like to, I can simply tell you to do what everyone else does. Create a thread, call it what you will, and post or link your DB fanart therein.
You may want to work on your personal pronouns, too. ;)
