Title: The Golden Compass

Has anyone heard of the upcoming movie "The Golden Compass"? I read about it in a newspaper and it stated that it's more like LOTR than Chronicles of Narnia. How true was that?

Anyway, here's the official website:

http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/

While visiting the site, do check out the "Daemons" part (pronounced "day-men"). There's a section called "Meet your Daemon" in which you will go through twenty questions and when you're done, your daemon will be chosen based on your decisions. It's exciting, go try it!

Btw, my daemon was Meida, a female Fox Daemon. Lovely... ;)

It was partly written in reaction to Narnia, replacing the Christian message with an agnostic message (and doing less of a mishmash in worldbuilding, something which Tolkien also thought Lewis shouldn't have done). It's more like Narnia than LotR, though--the main characters are kids, Will's originally from our world and time and Lyra's from an alternate version of Earth with a slight Victorian flavour (or so I thought back when I read it years ago), though the issue is on a grand scale the armies don't play as big a role as in LotR.

Mine was Aditi, who unfortunately started out a monkey but ended up a bird. :)

I can not wait for this film. The Golden Compass (although it's name was changed here in Oz to The Northern Lights) has remained my favorite book for a number of years. I first read it when I was eleven and didn't understand some of the more complex ideas, but everytime I re-read it I find something new.

I love the fact they cast Kidman as Mrs Coulter, she really suits the role. Beautiful but sadistic. She is one of my favorite characters even though I hate her in the story.

And the witches! I would love to see them on screen with their bird daemons. The creatures in the story books always struck me as amazing.

I really hope they continue to make the stories so we can see more of the books become movies. I would love to see how the director interperates the angels and their relationship as well as Will's experience with the Subtle Knife.

Oh, and Burnout Beau, it says at the begining of the books it is pronounced 'demon', but the author wanted to distinguish between 'daemon' and when Will said 'demon'.

The movie does look awsome. I don't have flash player so I can't see the site. I'll install it later...
