Title: What Kind Of Werewolf?
Description: for the story I'm writing

Salazaar - June 21, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
What one should I do? I'm writing a story just for the heck of it and it has werewolves and vampires in it. I'm pretty sure on the vampires, I think I'll make up my own reason why they can't be in the sun, they have super speed, strength, senses, can disappear instantly, can influence thoughts and emotions, maybe shape-shift (I'm still debating) and can turn into the large bat-like things in "Van Helsing". My werewolves are not so thought out. There's so many varieties of powers and changes and etc. I can't choose so I'm wondering what you guys like and prefer in a werewolf. I'm leaning toward not needing a full moon to transform, and super senses. I'm thinking between abnormally large wolf or the ones in Van Helsing, that are like a mythical creature all their own. What do you guys think?
I need some help! :D

It all depends what kind of story you want to tell, of course.

My favorite type of werewolves are like those in Larry Niven's science fiction oriented fantasy stories "What Good is a Glass Dagger" and "The Magic Goes Away". These stories use fantasy creatures, but the story word is governed by the rules of science. In these stories, werewolves are sentient beings not mindless monsters. They're sort of like another race of humans who live openly among normal humans. They can transform at will between human and wolf form anytime they want. When in wolf form, they're completely like large four-legged wolves. In wolf form, they're almost invincible except by silver. Because of this, most of them make a living as body guards for regular humans or as mercenaries. If you stab a werewolf, it feels all the pain, but it heals rapidly and lives. While in human form, they can be easily killed or injured however silver has no effect on them. The stories take place long before guns are invented, so there are no silver bullets, but there are silver daggers and swords they have to watch out for. But of course, silver is expensive, so the threat isn't that great to them. Werewolves live for a normal human life span.

Magic exists in the world, however it works according to the rules of science, and most importantly, conservation of energy applies to magic spells. Magic is powered by mana which is a natural resource that exists in the land. However, mana is not unlimited. In fact, once it's used up, it's gone sort of like oil. This is a crux point of the stories and behind this lies a secret about werewolves that even the werewolves don't know. (Read the stories if you want to find out. :))

They're good stories if you like sci-fi and werewolves.

Yeah, in the "Making of..." segment on the DVD for that movie, they said their intention was to make that werewolf look like a rock star. :)

I'm getting an idea in my head and it combines alot of different werewolf elements. I appreciate your guys' opinions and keep voicing them! Thanks for the help. I'm getting closer...

I kinda like the Twilight werewolves. Just because they can change when they're angry, and don't have to wait for the full moon.

I would so go with the Van Helsing werewolves.

I had a dream about werewolves.
They were big black wolves with streaks of silver along their backs, and could only exist during the full moon. Until that night came they existed in the dreams of others, haunting them and feeding on their minds, causing nightmares. They stayed in packs, and were ruled by a queen werewolf, bigger, fiercer and stronger than all of them. They are all extremely intelligent and the touch of silver is deadly to them and if the queen is slain then they all die.
Bit creepy seeing as I dreamt about them, but yes, I did watch Van helsing the night before. That is one awesome movie!
But yeah, since they're not traditional, you probably won't want to use it. Still, I like them!
(I made up a name for them. They're called "Shalafein Werewolves". that's the name of the queen)

Sugar Queen, those are cool! Brilliant idea.
I got the werewolves. They vary in color, depending on the werewolf's human form. They're like the van helsing wolves, huge, upright walking, although they aren't stuck after the first full moon. They can continually alter between wolf and human, with out the aid of the full moon. Silver doesn't bother them. The humans look like normal humans, although they look always like seasoned travelers, nature-hikers, and rather oddly muscular for people, but not frighteningly so. They can change when they're angry, and any other time no matter how they're feeling. Their injuries don't heal instantly, it takes a while longer than the vampires, but they're so hard to injure in the first place. You're either born one or you aren't, the only after-effect of being bitten is bleeding to death and dying.

Okay, I'm happy with them. I've already done two fight scenes with them and I'm very happy with how they turned out. Thanks for the help everhbody!
