Oh yes, Thunderbirds is a classic! A few years back they re-ran the series here on what was TechTV at the time (the channel I used to call "The Geek Channel" :)) and it was really fun seeing it again. Thunderbirds was created by husband and wife team Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who later went on to do live action shows.
I read an article a long time back that recounted an urban legend about someone once commenting to Gerry something to the effect of "yeah, that puppet show you've done isn't bad, but you can't do things like that with live action. Stories like that just wouldn't work." To which Gerry responded by doing exactly that. He and his wife made several live action shows, the most popular of which were UFO and Space: 1999. UFO in particular is really close in design and story style to Thunderbirds except it has live actors instead of puppets. It even has the same style of miniature ships and effects photography. Though they really picked up the pace of the stories. UFO has a lot more action in it. And just look at the cover art for the DVD release:

Don't those characters sort of look like puppets (particularly the woman)? But those are the actual live actors! :D
If you like Thunderbirds, try to check out these other two shows. They're both out on DVD. And of course if you like parodies, the creators of South Park did a spoof of Thunderbirds and puppet shows a couple of years ago called "Team America: World Police" which was pretty funny. If you're old enough, rent the uncensored version, though even the regular version is rated R. Believe it or not, they actually had some material in the original cut that the film ratings board thought was beyond an R rating and they had to edit it to avoid having an adult film rating on the movie. Though the idea of an adult film rating on a puppet movie is beyond absurd in my opinion. But you know how the creators of South Park are. :)
