Prologue
In the beginning, there were the proud gold dragons, whose intelligence and strength exceeds those of other creatures that walked the earth before them.
Then, came the dawn of humans, whose curious and adventurous nature led to the invention of marvelous tools to improve their lives.
When there were two dominant races living in a single land, it was only a matter of time before both worlds collide.
As the dragon and human population continued to grow, their territories widen and eventually, their borders met. For the first time in their lives, humans and dragons met face to face. The humans amazed at the dragon's superior strength and size while the dragons amazed at the humans' marvelous tools. Although sceptical in the beginning, both races eventually overcame their scepticism and together, they formed a relationship that will change the course of their lives forever.
At first, the humans and dragons were living in separate tribes. But that was until the discovery of a very precious and important mineral a hundred years later. This mineral harnessed a very high concentration of energy that can power up almost every single human machinery and tools they had invented. But most suprising of all was that the mineral seem to have a strong influence on the gold dragons, especially since the mineral emitted a gold aura. Hence from then on, the humans called the mineral draconium.
But this development doesn't end there. With a strong desire to unite both races, humans and dragons agreed to create a haven where both their kinds can live peacefully together. And they decided to build their haven near to the site where the draconium minerals were discovered. The humans engineered the construction of the haven while the dragons helped out in the more heavier duties of construction. Through hardship and teamwork, they had finally built their dream haven. And they named it Dragon City.
To provide power to the city, the dragons harvested gold draconium minerals nearby while the humans constructed a special generator where the minerals will be stored. Due to the generator's rather large size, they placed the generator underground where it was easier for the generator to provide power to all of the structure.
At the time, it was good.
For thousands of years, both races lived in harmony. But living in a single haven may not be enough. They decided to build more similar havens in other locations around the world. This plan was further encouraged by the discovery of more draconium minerals. But instead of gold, they found a variety of draconium colour that they had never expected before. Based on the site of the minerals, they built their city near the mining site. Through time, these cities started forming empires based on the type of draconium they're mining.
While the dragons were still living their usual lives, humans were constantly seeking new improvements to improve their lives and their society. But the humans also wanted to improve their reptilian counterparts' lives too. So, their adventurous nature kicked in again and they started finding ways to help their fellow neighbours. Through the advancement of science, humans experimented on the effects of exposing gold dragon eggs to the different colours of draconium. The result was the creation of new breeds of dragons based on the colour of draconium exposed to. Though the experiments conducted were approved by these empires, many in Dragon City disagreed of such studies. The ancient Dragon Priests, organised to maintain and preserve their ancient ways, protested these experiments, claiming that it would be a catastrophe to the gold dragon population. But despite the mass protests, these empires continued on with the experiments. As for the original gold dragons, they were thrilled to meet with new kinds of dragons that they had never met before.
At the time, it was still good.
However, in the long term, the gold dragon population began to decline due to the constant use of their eggs to create these sub-species dragon. To make matters worse, the humans learned that the rare gold-star dragons, which were more powerful, agile, independent and intelligent than a normal gold dragon and can be distinguished by the star-shaped bonemark on their heads, were facing extinction.
As for the gold dragons, they learned that their sub-species counterparts were treated harshly by their human masters. They explained to the over-dependent multi-coloured dragons that they were mistreated by their masters and should not let humans gain total control of their lives. This, indirectly, led to a revolt by the dragons who demanded that they should be given more autonomy like their gold cousins.
An emergency meeting was held between the emperors and the Dragon Priests. There, the gold-draconium emperor urged that their breeding experiments were hurting the gold dragon population and should be controlled to a certain extent. After hours of discussion, all the emperors agreed to control their experiments. All, except one; the emperor of the Black Draconium Empire. He despised the gold dragons to be 'old' and 'weak', not being able to maintain their own population. He even called the gold dragons 'rebels' for rebelling against human control and that their influence on the other multi-coloured dragons will threaten humanity.
This twisted philosphy led to a tragic turn of events. A few days after the meeting, a pride of gold dragons were found dead outside Dragon City. As the weeks go by, more deaths were reported, and all of these deaths only involved gold dragons. Furthermore, it was discovered that evidence of human tools and weaponry were responsible for their deaths than by disease. As the news spread all over the world, some empires started pointing fingers at the Black Draconium Empire, whose leader despised gold dragons.
The Black Draconium Empire's retaliation was swift. Soon after that accusation, the emperor responded by invading neighbouring territories and capturing cities that belonged to other empires. But the emperor was no fool; before the invasion, he has gained alliance with a few empires to join him in his quest to annihilate the Gold Draconium Empire and their gold dragons. As for the Dragon Priests, what they feared had came true.
A war has started.
The Gold Draconium Empire and their own allies had no choice but to fight back. They, too, declared war.
The gold dragons did their best by pleading with the other multi-coloured dragons to not serve the humans who started the war and to avoid bloodshed with other dragons. Although some of them did agree, many of them were already over-dependent on their human masters or had made up their own mind to fight the humans on their own.
As a result, both man and dragon fought each other in a terrible war.
May there be mercy between humans and dragons...

Chapter 1
Seven years before the war.
A Dragon Priest stood silently in a dimly lit room of one of the many Dragon Temples surrounding Dragon City. The temples were built by the priests to remind people of their past and ancient ways. Now, some were converted into refugee camps to protect the threatened gold dragons, who were facing the threat of extinction due to human carelessness and brutality. But doing so might agitate whoever was behind the murders of the gold dragons.
He was standing and observing a map placed on a round marble table. The priest examined the map closely, pinpointing the areas where the gold dragon murders took place. He noticed a pattern; most of these deaths occurred in the Black Draconium Empire's territory. The priest was not suprised by the discovery, since many gold dragons still preferred living in the wild and the Black Draconium emperor can take advantage on gold dragon prides in his territory. But whatever the reason was, time was running out.
Difficult times lie ahead. If nothing were to be done to stop these murders and reach an agreement with the Black Draconium Empire soon, our ancestors' efforts will all be in vain. Many thoughts circulated in the priests' mind, worried that humans' everlasting peace with dragons is about to reach breaking point.
While he was busy with his thoughts, a knock sounded on the door. The priest turned to meet a man, dressed in a simple tunic, standing by the door, breathing heavily.
"Another reported murder," was all the man said. His voice obviously showed signs of sadness and sorrow.
At first, the priest droopped his head slightly, knowing that if this goes on, it will be the end for the gold dragons for good. But before he can reply, the man continued, "But we found a survivor."
Upon hearing the news, the priests spirit lighten up again, suprised by the sudden development. He immediately responded, "Bring me to it."
The man led the Dragon Priest to another section of the temple; the main hall. The hall was rather big; big enough to hold up to fifty dragons comfortably. Bright yellow crystal lamps hanging from each sides of five pillars illuminated the hall, topped by a crystal-made dome ceiling that covered the hall.
Upon entering the hall, they saw five people; four of them were kneeling around something while the fifth one is a lady in an olive green dress. She gracefully bowed before the priest before leaving the hall in a hurry. The priest walked slowly towards the rest of them. What he saw left him breathless.
In the middle of the small crowd was a rather small gold dragon. The priest watched as three women, apparently healers, treated the dragon's wounds.
The dragon was taking slow, shallow breaths; it's eyes closed shut, too tired to even move it's eyelids. It's physique was suprisingly well built considering the size of it's body (which is about the size of a wolf). Muscles had already developed well for this dragon, especially around the chest and legs. It's two stubby horns were smeared by a bright red substance. There were bandages wrapped around the dragon's body, mostly around it's rib cage and neck area. Dried blood can be seen trailing from the bandages where the wound was, staining the dragon's rough skin.
To the priest, he noticed some oddities in the dragon. Firstly, the dragon has a suprisingly big chin; not that it was something to laugh at, but it's more of something rather unique to him. And secondly, his skin was more black than gold; something that was rare for a gold dragon.
This is one odd gold dragon I've never come across before, especially since it's primary skin colour is more black than gold. Was it something special?
His heart was filled with excitement and concern. But as a noble Dragon Priest, he cannot allow his emotions to get the better of his feelings and has to calm himself down before he can ask any questions.
"How was it's condition?"
One of them, a brown-haired man, apparently a soldier based on the gold-plated armour he wore on his body and clutching a gold helmet, replied softly, "His wounds are quite serious, but fortunately, he's in stable condition."
The priest nodded. So it's a male...
The soldier continued, "We found him in a small cave near where the murders took place. He was barely concious at that time. If our men didin't act quickly, he could've died from his wounds."
"Were there any other dragons alive when your men reached the scene?"
"None. They were all killed on the spot. Ten of them, to be exact," the soldier paused for a moment, watching the healers wiping dried blood from the dragon's skin with a wet cloth. He continued again, "It's amazing that he managed to survive while the others perished. What's more, he's only a cub. How old do you think he is?"
The priest observed the young dragon, studying it's physical appearance closely before reaching a conclusion. "Judging by it's size, I guess he's about fourteen months old. And yes, I do agree with you; that it's a miracle that he managed to survive the murders." He got down to one knee and slowly reached out and gently gripped the dragon's left paw with his left hand. This prompted the injured dragon cub to open his eyes wearily. He eyed the human curiously, pondering over the priest's intention. Regardless of his decision, he couldn't do anything more but groan weakly and shifted his tail slightly. He could barely move his body due to the pain he has endured.
"It's okay, little one. We mean you no harm. There's nothing to be afraid of us," the priest assured the dragon. The dragon let out another soft groan before closing it's sad, golden eyes. Not wanting to disturb the dragon anymore, the priest let loose his grip and gently placed the dragon's paw to the ground. He slowly got back up to his feet, followed by the soldier.
The soldier put on his helmet and stood beside the priest. Both men observed the healers doing their task silently.
"Looks like he'll be staying with you for a long time to come, I guess," the soldier whispered softly to the priest.
"Indeed. He's got no where else to go. This temple is the next best thing for his safety."
"Have you thought of a name to call him?"
Name. Never thought about it in the first place...
The priest did not reply the soldier's question immediately. Instead, he stared at the dragon, thinking of a suitable name to call him. While thinking, he examined the dragon's body, trying to find something unique that can inspire him and stimulate his thinking further. After a minute, he couldn't find a suitable name for it.
And naming this cub based on his chin is going to be ridiculous for him.
Eventually, he did thought of a name that fits him perfectly. This came from a realisation; of all the gold dragons he met, this was perhaps the most beautiful dragon he'd ever seen. If he's a beauty at such young age, one can only wonder how he will look like when he became an adult.
Beautiful...beautiful Beau....
**********
Night has fallen over Dragon City. Many of it's inhabitants were already asleep, although there were some still doing their daily businesses. The main streets were now silent as a breeze swept dust across the empty roads.
Leaning on a bench in front of a five-storey hospital was a man in his late 30's; his head tilted upwards. His long, brown hair was left dangling from the back of the bench. His blue eyes were staring up into the skies, staring at the constellations of stars that were scattered across the night sky. His mind was full of thoughts of what's to come in the future.
It's been a long time since I've last seen such a beautiful night. Is this a good sign of things to come? I hope so. I dearly hoped so.
"What a suprise to see you, captain Adryus."
Adryus wasn't startled by the stranger's question. He smiled softly and slowly lifted his head up to meet whoever who asked him. When he saw the stranger, his lips curled into a grin. The stranger was standing in front of him, dressed in a loose, white sleeveless shirt and a white leather pants. His hair was black and spiky.
"And what a suprise to see you too, Julyon. What're you doing hanging out at such a time?"
It was Julyon's turn to smile, unable to find a suitable reply to his captain. So he simply replied, "Just getting some fresh air. Mind having a seat with you, sir?"
Adryus motioned him to the bench as he moved to make room. "Go ahead."
Julyon sat on the bench beside his captain. Both men didin't say anything at the moment; Julyon was transfixed by the beauty of the night sky while Adryus was still in deep thought.
Then, Julyon broke the silence. "Do you think our emperor can seek a way to end this conflict with the Black Draconium Empire soon?"
"I hope so, but it won't be easy. Both us and them have, let's say, contradicting point of views. We wanted to protect the gold dragons, they despised them. We protested against their experiments on gold dragon eggs, they defended their actions."
Julyon raised an eyebrow. "So, all these because of the gold dragons?"
"Aye. But remember; the gold dragons are the original dragons around here, not the multi-coloured ones. The multi-coloured dragons were bred mainly for specific purposes; brown and green dragons for carrying heavy loads, red dragons for heat, purple dragons for recoinassance, and so forth. But at least the gold dragons doesn't seem to bother much; that is, until their offsprings started sporting colours other than gold."
Julyon chuckled at that. "Can't imagine the look on the parents' faces when they saw their 'offsprings'."
Adryus smiled, "I know what you mean." He paused for a while before continuing in a more serious tone, "But seriously, I really do hope something can come out of this. There's been too many reported gold dragon deaths lately and I don't want things to get even worse. Already some empires started pointing fingers at the Black Draconium Empire."
Julyon looked at his captain curiously. "You don't think they're responsible?"
"I'm not the kind of person who jump into conclusions immediately without solid proof. We can't simply accuse someone without solid proof, even if the person is a prime suspect."
Julyon fell silent. He knew that captain Adryus has a point; the Black Draconium Empire may have motives for killing the gold dragons, but without proof that they did it, they cannot be prosecuted.
Adryus leaned back onto the bench slowly. "But most importantly, an agreement must be reached with the Black Draconium Empire regarding the experiments. The emperor will definately need to seek advice from the Dragon Priests. Whatever the results are, we must be prepared for a possible worst-case scenario."
Just then, a cry was heard from the building. Immediately, Adryus lifted his head up to find out where the cry came from. It was coming from the second floor.
And the cry sounded like an infant's.
Adryus couldn't believe what he has just heard. His mind was blurred with suprise for a moment. His jaw hung slightly open.
"Sounds like someone's going to be a mother," Julyon said without looking up.
"And a father," Adryus replied and immediately stood up. Julyon never had the chance to ask his captain as he entered the hospital.
Adryus made his way to the second floor and to a room facing the opposite building. The door to the room was slightly open, and he slowly pushed it open. His heart was beating rapidly as his nervousness seems to be getting the better of him.
No point getting nervous now. Just face the fact that this day has finally come.
When he entered the room, he saw a blonde-haired lady cradling a baby in her arms as two nurses stood at bedside. Their faces were filled with happiness and joy for the mother.
A doctor came up to Adryus and shook his hand and muttered, "Congratulations."
Adryus smiled as he shook hands with the doctor, "Thank you, doctor." The doctor then excused himself and left the room. When the doctor left, Adryus walked slowly to the lady, his wife, and kissed her on the forehead.
"He's lovely, isn't he?" she said softly, her voice showing signs of exhaustion.
"He sure is, Callysta. He sure is," Adryus replied while gently stroking the baby's hair.
Standing by the door frame, Julyon watched proudly at the couple. He watched for a moment, without his captain even realising his presence. But he has no intention of disturbing him or his wife now, so he decided to leave without notice.
Hope you can savour this wonderful moment, captain.
As Adryus was cradling his child in his arms, Callysta asked him softly, "What do you think we should name him?"
"No ideas from you?"
"Well, since our child's a boy, I think he deserved to be named by his father."
Adryus remained silent as he tried to think of a suitable name for his son. After a minute, Callysta inquired, "Found a suitable name yet? I'm sure you can figure out many names suitable for a boy."
"I sure did, Cally." Adryus said as he turned to his wife with a kind smile. "Artemys. Artemys Cayle."
Callysta smiled, "Artemys...I love that name."
