Title: I'm going to get a guide dog!
ShadowCat - September 17, 2005 04:21 AM (GMT)
I'm going to be on the waiting list to get a guide dog! It should take six to twelve months for me to get one, but I could get one any time.

That's great news, ShadowCat! I hope your name comes up on the waiting list sooner rather than later.

I guess tha golden rtriver or Geman Sheper are the most usual choice in that job

I think I'll probably end up with a Labrador. I don't think they breed German Shepherds in Queensland and they don't have many Golden Retrievers. They can get them from other guide dog schools, but it would take longer for me to get a dog then.

Wait, are you almost blind? Sorry, but I don't know; I really don't mean to sound insulting...
We had a German Shepard when I was growing up. His name was Max and he was very sweet. We had to put him to sleep several years ago because his hips weren't working. I miss him, but PLEASE don't give me the 'I'm sorry' thing. What's done is done, and I don't mean to sound cold. I've gotten over it, but when people say they're sorry, well... It makes me sad. <_<

Yes, I'm almost blind. It's hard to say how much I can and can't see because I've never had normal sight. I can see things that are close even if I can't quite tell what they are sometimes. I can't see as much when there's not enough light or too much light or when I'm walking and I've noticed that lately I seem to be bumping into things more often. I haven't seen some things until I've actually bumped into them, which is really annoying. I'm hoping that using a dog instead of a cane might help me avoid those things a little bit more. Plus, I like the fact that with a dog you look like you're walking normally. I think that people tend to react differently to you when you've got a dog as well.

*nods* Okay. I was wondering how you could type on a forum and need a guide dog... It's wonderful! I'm soo happy for you, ShadowCat!

I can't wait! It's going to be a very interesting experience.

Have you considered asking for baby pictures of the dog you'll be getting? I don't know how the school you're getting your dog from works, but at Guide Dogs for the Blind there's a family that raises the pup in their family for about a year for basic training. I'm happy to say the first pup my family raised is now working, though the second one flunked out of the program.

Guide Dogs Queensland works in a similar way. I suppose I could get pics, but it would depend on the puppy raisers.
