I'm an engineer and I suck at writing fiction, so forgive me if this is dumb, but how about this: she could be studying to be a dragon doctor (I don't want to use the word "veterinarian" when we're talking about a sentient species). I think that fits both your requirements: medical doctors are highly respected and given the tight integration of dragons in the world, the general public should appreciate it. And given Word's attitude towards dragons (objects to be controlled) he would think it a waste of time to cure their diseases. If one of Word's wraith dragons became sick, his response would most likely be to just euthanize it and get another to replace it.
Does that work?

Teacher/professor? Educating people (lofty goal) vs. underpaid and overworked?
Academic? (See above.)
Creative writing class? Word definitely wouldn't like that one.
Historian?
Student of the Ancient Prophecies o' Doom? (Could be plot-relevant, as could 'historian'.)
Studying to become Dragon Priestess?

That's not a good reason to say you suck at fic! :P
Um... I'd go with something to do with the prophecies/priestess/historian thing that Sarah suggested.

I actually like the Dragon Doctor suggestion.

No, I guess it isn't. :) I was speaking only for myself, of course.

Being part of Dragon Security could be a respectable job as well and something Word would detest, since they could possibly hinder his plans. But then, when was the last time Dragon City Security showed some competence in doing some things the Dragon Booster ended up doing?
Like that stampede for instance. If Moordryd easily managed to come up with that idea, why wasn't there a countermeasure for that? Was it the first time it happened and if so, how did they know it was a stampede (or call it a stampede)?
Then again, at other times they were either short of officers, outnumbered by rebellious/wraith dragons or told by the Dragon Booster to stay back.
Well, you can always go with other ideas, Airshadow.

| What means ''sentient"? |
In short, it refers to a being (like a human) that is intelligent enough to be consciously aware of its own existence on a high level and the fact that it will die some day. It's a creature that isn't merely an animal. It gets philosophical pretty quickly, and if you read science fiction, various authors have proposed a number of different tests that can be applied. One is that only a sentient creature would think to make out a will, for example.
