Description: The tidbits that spice up DB!

Daigerus - September 12, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
Since there hasn't been a topic like this, I thought it was best that I would make one up. Please free to add anything that I've missed and point out mistakes that I've made and sources would be great as well for referencing.

FLORA:

Palm Tree
Episode 12 "Misjudged", where a headshot of Artha shows a neon-lighted sign of a palm tree complete with coconuts behind him.

Stylized Japanese Style Garden (?)
Episodes of "The Choosing", various times.

Moss
Unsure, on various ruins.

Rose
Unsure, is refered to by a sign called "ROSE".

Episode 25 "The Return of Drakkus - Part 1", Cain mentions a bit about " a hundred Muhortas".

Mouse
Episode 14 "If It Ain't Broke", Stewardd gets called by this a lot.

Chicken(?)
Unsure, either from a taunt made by one of the main characters or the actual chicken noise made in Parm's/Lance's shots.

Elephant(?)
Episode 18 "The Leap of Lorius", a sound effect when Lance's hand gets stepped on by Moordryd.

Puppies (could refer to baby dragons)
Unsure, mentioned by Cain in a Season 2 episode.
Episode 1 "The Choosing - Part 1", Connor refers to his sons as such.

FOOD:

I remember seeing some sort of plant in episode 22, "Wraith Booster". :cookie:

What features did it have? Any leaves? Short or tall? Green or another color? Just asking to clarify what kind of plant we're dealing with.

Sidenote: does anyone know what happened to Furox's topic about Beau's chin and other random stuff? It had a lot of references to other items that could be added here.

It's right here: :)

How Does Beau Eat

Other fauna:

Cain makes a reference to puppies somewhere. I can't quite remember where, but I think it was in a season 2 episode. Though Connor refers to raising his sons and Beau from "pups", so it might be possible "puppy" refers to baby dragon in their world.

There's also the Purple Tracking Dragon used in "Prophet's Motive" and "Still Waters Freeze".

Food items:

The candy bars for dragons are Dragonola bars.

The candy bars for people (and dragons) are Draconee-yum bars.

We also see Artha moving a barrel of dragon food in "Faster than Fear", though we don't know what dragon food is actually made from. When we see Beau eating from his trough, it looks like dog food (i.e., some type of processed meat).

On the subject of flora, there is a real lack of it in Dragon City. It's almost as if they don't like plants. :D Apparently, it doesn't fit the hi-tech visual look of the show.

Welcome back to the forum, Daigerus! :)

Welcome back to the forum, Daigerus! :)

Logically speaking (as I am only watching the 7th episode here and have yet to form any real observation), there would have to be plants somewhere.

It is likely that only 'basic' plants such as weeds or ferns would sprout out of tiny crevices, or perhaps moss (though I think they are not considered to be 'real' plants), lichen, fungus would coat damp surfaces

Then again, the colouring of dragon city is unlikely to highlight the presence of these minature life forms. Quite a pity, as it would have added a touch of realism to the city.

Then again, if there were no plants, there would be no exchange of oxygen/carbon dioxide. So how does human and dragons obtain sufficient oxygen?

It is intriguing to imagine that the air they breath is artificially derieved, as the technology of dragon city looks quite capable of such a feat.

What do you think? :plot:

Yes, definitely. The description of the city levels answers this question a bit. It's on the official web site www.dragonbooster.com. Go to The Story->Dragon City->Work Town.

According to this, the Work Town level contains vast hydroponic farms that supply all the food for the city. And since we regularly see fish bones in the garbage, one could also assume there are fish farms there as well. (Of course, I'm sure the real reason they always show banana peels and fish bones in the trash cans is that those are internationally recognized icons of garbage that any viewer will instantly grasp. :))

I'm not sure if the farms alone are supposed to be supplying the oxygen for the city. We know Dragon City is built on top of ruins, but we don't know much of anything of what lies beyond the perimeter of the city. Sentrus makes a round about reference to other cities when she says there are only two academy openings for racers from Dragon City. So maybe there are forests/jungles between cities that we haven't seen yet. If there are, that would solve the carbon dioxide/oxygen problem.

Their technology appears to be at the point where all their energy sources appear to be clean. They use draconium energy and geothermal energy is generated in Shadow Town. So that would cut greenhouse gases and probably avoid global warming. Though there are an awful lot of dragons in Dragon City, so there is the issue of how much methane a dragon would "emit"... ;)

But they definitely don't seem to like having ornamental or decorative plants around in the city. Even the "trees" in the garden area of Penn Stables aren't real trees since they're flat like cut-outs. And instead of looking like real trees, they look like stylized sculptures instead, sort of like it's more a sculpture garden. Now I know that using 2D objects is a short cut in 3D animation, so this could simply be a case of saving money on the animation end by not having to model plants and trees. Not having plants would also save the time to place them in the sets and would reduce rendering time as well. So this may be a case of where plants were taken out of the environment to save time and money on the animation, and they then designed the look of the city with a plant-less concept in mind. It's difficult to know if the primary motivation was to save money or they intentionally wanted the hi-tech look (without plants) from the start.

Daigerus - September 13, 2006 12:00 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the link and welcome, Furox! Great to be back here now that there are new episodes. :D

I'll have those fauna and food updated as well.

As my response to the lack of plants, there's a possibility that there isn't enough fertile soil in Dragon City to make an adequate farm, hence the hydrophonic ones.

The Furox - September 13, 2006 12:30 AM (GMT)
Yeah, soil issues occurred to me, too. Maybe they just don't want dirt in the city because it's messy. :) Or maybe Dragon City citizens are like me and just hate doing gardening and yard work. :D I have no live plants in the house because I just hate taking care of them. Silk plants just need dusting once in awhile. :)

One other food related thing occurred to me: in "Three Times a Hero" we see Kitt feeding Wyldfyr at a road side dragon feed station. It dispensed some kind of liquid into a trough which Wyldfyr promptly inhaled. I assume it was more than just water since Kitt had to slide her credit card to get it and I wouldn't think they'd charge for water. I've been assuming it was a protein/energy drink of some kind.

It would be interesting to know what the popular human foods are. We've never humans eating a real meal, so this is an open question. Do you think they have burger joints and other kinds of fast food? Or with all the very noticeable Japanese influence in all the architecture, do you think they go for a more oriental style diet based around rice, fish and that style of cooking.

Mari - September 13, 2006 10:11 PM (GMT)
Don't forget parmesean cheese!! Artha referred to Parm as 'Parmesean' <sp?> in.... The Lost track of Doom I believe and Parm said "It's Parmon Sean, not Parmesean! That's a cheese!"
I remember I made a topic about that a while ago!

And also, in the Changelings, we see that Beau ((Artha's body)) is eating some groady looking dragon-food-slop stuff.

In All Is Not Lost, Stewardd makes a new type of candy from Artha's bar. This had pink lines going up it.

There is also some form of 'Burgers' from Nayade's translation of a sign:
user posted image

Also some sort of coffee or cafe from Nayade:
user posted image

And, from another sign, we can deduce that there are some sort of Bear-like creatures ((toys)) and rose plants ((ROSE sign)). From the looks of that top sign, it seems they play ping-pong as well! Again, from Nayade.

Ok, some critique:
*Perhaps 'pup' is what they call baby dragons- They have seal pups and dolphin pups, so.... Yeah.
*Also, the 'Yum-Yums' mentioned... Ceph has a great post regarding that on DL:
QUOTE ("Pursoot")
How about Draconium Yummies that Parmon mentioned in The Rules of Power? Can we use those?

Cepheus replied:
QUOTE ("Cepheus")
He meant the blue draconium. Cyrano/Saumurox kept absorbing blue gear, so he was threatening that he wouldn't allow Cyrano to have any more. At least that's how I interpreted it.

Daigerus - September 14, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
Thanks Mari, I'm surprised I forgot about the cheese part and it seems you helped answer some of the Furox's question about foods with that burger sign. But it raises another question: what kind of meat is in that burger? ;)

I'll also make the appropriate changes to the list. Thanks again for the contribution, Mari and The Furox!

EDIT: By the way, should I sort them alphabetically or chronologically (from the earliest episode they appeared or mentioned in)?

Tofu? :P It's really not as bad as people think.

Chronologically, but that's just me. It also makes it easier to spot patterns or discrepancies and stuff.

Ah, don't forget the whole shrimp thing in "Broken Bonds"!

Cain: *grumbles* Shrimp, sprat...they're both tiny little fish...now move before I make you bait! (Or something along that line.)

Yeah, I was going to mention the cheese gag as well. If there's cheese, there are probably other mammals around. I say "probably" since you can also make a cheese-like product from soy milk. But assuming it's regular dairy cheese, then they've got mammals giving milk somewhere. Though there is certainly a very visible lack of mammals in the show other than humans. Except for spoken references to things like shrimp and puppies, every other kind of animal we've seen has been some kind of reptile. Makes you wonder if most mammalian life perished in the first war or something.

QUOTE (LightningFlash @ Sep 13 2006, 09:49 PM)
Tofu? :P It's really not as bad as people think.

Very true. A Chinese restaurant I go to serves Hot Braised Bean Curd Szechuan Style which is one of my favorites. And I'm not vegetarian. I also like these vegetarian burger-like patties they sell here under the brand name Garden Burgers. They cook in minutes, so they're great for a quick lunch.

Going back to what the meat in the burger on the sign might be and what meat they might use for dragon food, unless it's all tofu, what do you think the odds are that it's some kind of reptile meat? There is that real visible lack of other mammals on the planet which just makes me wonder if they might raise some kind of lower form of reptile for their meat supply. I don't think that would be as gross as you might think. I've eaten rattlesnake and it tastes fine. And I'm not trying to be funny when I say it tastes like chicken because that's what it does taste like. So it seems they could be farm raising some kind of reptile for food.

Salazaar - December 11, 2006 03:28 AM (GMT)
Those signs that Nayade translated made no sense..........
Interesting topic though!
I'm alot more confused now, but whatever......
It does seem weird that they sometimes refer to earthly animals in insults and in conversation, but they never have or see any.......
That seems weird that Dragons' Like Beau would be eating some type of mutilated lower from of reptile................blech.
Strange how they have candy bars and that's about all you see them eat......

Yue-chan - December 11, 2006 08:34 PM (GMT)
I would assume they have pizza too, since in "Framed" when they broke into the prison Chute asked if anyone ordered a pizza.

The Furox - December 13, 2006 07:05 AM (GMT)
I'm glad they have pizza in Dragon City as well. Now I feel more comfortable about moving there. :D But is it New York or Chicago style pizza? These are important questions.

Assuming they put cheese on their pizza, does this mean there's a dairy industry somewhere? With cows or some other type of mammal from which they get milk? Or are they making a non-dairy cheese product from soy or something? Given the total lack of any other mammals besides humans, it's hard to tell.

Funny how the mention of one simple thing like pizza raises so many questions. :D

For Fauno a drago slug from the episode where they sneak into the academy to save Word (can'tremeber the name)
