Title: Allusion To The Mythological Thread
Description: A thought on Artha and Lance
Saargebietdragonrider - September 5, 2006 03:16 AM (GMT)
Hi all! My first post.................
I recently picked up this series a few days ago and am absolutely hooked !
Well, in the Arthurian Saga, both King Arthur and Sir Lancelot shared a strong brotherhood bond (although I don't think they were actual bros). However, both of them lusted the very same woman, Guineviere (think this is how its spelt).
In DB, wouldn't it be interesting if Artha and Lance both desired for the same thing.........say a new breed of dragon, a powerful gear...........and nearly destroyed each other in fighting to possess it? This would really give the series a twist as Artha does not only have to content with Moordryd as an enemy, but also his own blood brother.............
Maybe, I will write a fanfic along these lines...........right now have an assignment to research into
See ya !

Haha.........yeah I almost forgot how cute Lance is !
I just had a cursory glance at the Moordryd and Lance bonding thread..............and perhaps just as Lance helped Moordryd to 'see the light at the end of the tunnel', maybe Lance could use some of Moordryd's evil schemes to get the better of his brother.............
Drat!, at this rate I would have revealed all my fanfic's storyline !

Nah. Artha lived with that look for 10 years, i think he can ignore it now. And anyways, Artha would never to do such a thing. Turn on Lance? No way. "And i'm gonna take care of Lance too." Plus, i bet they're really close now that Lance saved his life, from the Shadow Track.

I want to read the fanfic too! But i kind of don't also. I don't want to see Lance turn and Artha and vice-versa.

Interesting.
But I'll clear some things up by what little I know for a trilogy I'm reading (It's called Arthur(not about king Arthur but it includes that) King Arthur and Sir Lancelot are not brothers but Sir Lancelot is the Knight of Knights (means he is both strong in body and heart). They both lust after Queen Guinevere. Queen Guinevere is married to King Arthur but betrays the King by um... ya know with Lancelot of the Lake.
As I found while reading this trilogy is that there is a knight who is part of the round table with a name very similar to Moordryd but it was slightly different but I'm sure they were pronounced the same way. So it makes you think...

Yah, I alsowant to read the fanfic. ANd Hunters right, Arthas the only person Puppy eyes wont work against. After all, he had to bear it his whole life. And the only way way Lance would turn on Artha was if he got influenced by a bonemark or something like that.
Liliwen - September 6, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
The fanfic would be interesting to read, but I couldn't see Lance turning on Artha, not unless there was a bonemark like Armaggeddon said. Or maybe the blue gauntlet... Artha may think it's too dangerous for Lance, but Lance wants to fulfill his destiny! But without a bonemark or something the fight won't go beyond normal, intense sibling rivalry.

It will be very interesting to read it.

Yes, that's Mordred, Arthur's illegitimate son by his half-sister, his one sin who turned out to be his downfall. (Further on that: in some versions of the legend Arthur tried to do a King Herod due to a prophecy regarding said downfall. Nancy Farmer wrote a rather decent YA from Mordred's POV on the topic.)
But it's not as though DB does a decent job with the mythology, as you see from the above and from Lance's role in it. I don't like that--if you're going to make mythological references, bloody well take the trouble to make them rather than dump a couple of names in because you think they sound cool. And you've also got Alexander the Great's horsie from history rather than Caliburn-the-living-sword as a plot device. I also doubt Artha will turn out to have a similar ancestral history to the legend--created from old!DB's cryogenically frozen sperm (or variant of the above) seems unlikely, and there's no upper class per se for him to belong to as far as we know. Although the name "Connor" is loosely related to the name "Ector" (the knight who took the future king in)...
Mortis, of course, takes the Merlin role, though as yet there's no Igraine (dead?), Nimue, Morgan/Morgause (Zulay, Le Fay?), Elaine (Lancelot's fangirl), or Lady of the Lake (Mortis seems to steal that role as provider of Beau).
Lancelot, of course, was a later French add-in to the tale--a sort of Gary-Stu shoved in back then, though adequately developed by now. :P

Hey, I rather like post-Perlesvaus Lancelot. As far as I'm concerned, the Arthurian legends are up for grabs. I sort of wish they'd done the same with Gilgamesh.
DB makes allusions to many literary works/historical events. Beau/Bucephalus and the "Reports of my demise [sic] have been greatly exaggerated."

I don't quite categorise that as 'allusion'--it seems more of an attempt to pass off the only intelligent line in the whole episode as the writers' own work. :P It's exactly the reason why Cassandra Claire (of HP fame) is a plagiarist and Dorothy Sayers is not--Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey is a character who quotes other wits in games of 'find-the-quote' with other characters, but the former used quotes in games of 'look how brilliant I am unless you know where I got it from!' And Connor has no reason to quote Samuel Clemens. Still, the line's certainly public domain, and it's possible the writers had sufficient faith their audience would realise the allusion. No doubt it's bona fide good intention and all that.
Penny Dreadful - September 7, 2006 04:00 AM (GMT)
Anyone with any literary knowledge would recognize Twain. I doubt they were trying to just slip one past us. ...I'm not crazy about Cassandra Claire though...I've read her work and it certainly wasn't poorly written...but it wasn't great...I've read much better work that's A LOT more deserving. You can dig up some impressive stuff archive diving.

In this one version, Mordred(aka our Moordryd for those who can't tell!) was the one who fully showed Lancelot's lust for Gwen to the king, thus turning them against each other.
I think Moordryd might do something to drive a wedge between the brothers, so that he can get Lance to side with him instead of Artha.

I could really see that happening. I hope the writers do put something like that in. Though I have no idea what the wedge could be...yet.

ÇI hope not.
is sad when sibblings are divided
Armeggadon - September 17, 2006 03:06 PM (GMT)
Honestly, do you think Lace would turn against Artha?

Liliwen - September 19, 2006 12:15 AM (GMT)
I don't think it'll be a huge war between them, just a fight. Something that will eventually work out by the end of the episode.

Hmm, that could be interesting. Though for it to be worth Moordryd's time and effort, I think he would have to first find out that Artha is the Dragon Booster. Otherwise, I'm not sure Moordryd would want to waste his time to just get two people he believes are merely stable brats to fight. But if he discovered Artha's identity, then he'd have lots of motivation to pursue a plan like that.
Personally, I think all the names and perhaps the Twain quote as well are just Easter eggs for people to notice. I don't think the story line is going to follow any of the legends that have been referenced.
