Err... I don't know why, but everytime I try to see pics posted by you, the "user posted image" sentence appears.... and I would love to see your art.

The Furox - July 24, 2006 05:52 PM (GMT)
For some reason, I'm unable to connect to the server hosting your images. It comes back with "art.mobstop.com stopped responding" indicating there's some kind of connection or server issue. Is anyone else having connection problems with that server, or is it just me? Unfortunately, I've never been able to look at any of your images hosted there so far.

arthur, you might want to consider using a photobucket or deviantart account for your artwork instead. Those servers are very reliable.

arthur - July 24, 2006 06:15 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. there was a crash today, I wasn't able to connect. Now everything's fine. I see the images, maybe it's you. *sigh* just when I found a good host with no ads and good capabilities :(. K gonna make mirrors somewhere...

Still no connection here, so I don't think it was that. I've never been able to connect to mobstop.com. Do they maybe limit themselves to only serving a certain set of countries?

arthur - July 25, 2006 09:16 AM (GMT)
Weird. Do other ppl see images from my host? I know Skye does.
Anyway...
Here's another pencil art.

Btw, what kind of a graphic tablet do you have?

The Furox - August 4, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
Great stuff, arthur! I particularly like this one of Beau. That's one of Beau's best poses, isn't it. Very nice!

If you want, I can put these up on dragon-city.org. Just let me know.

I took a screenshot of the scene from ep. 1, cropped and changed the color balance in photoshop and used it as tracing image in ArtRage. :P Well, not everything is the same as in the scene, you see.
--------Update---------
It was a while since I've last drawn a winged dragon. Wanted to remember those aerials ^_^
Warning! Horny winged dragon ahead!

Hey! I've got an idea of making a tutorial for screenshots and how to prepare them for further use. Do you think I should do one? ;)

The Furox - August 8, 2006 06:49 AM (GMT)
Great artwork, arthur! I like your work with ArtRage and the pencil sketches. (By the way, I have your art loaded up on dragon-city.org now.)

Yes, please do! If you have any good techniques you've learned, then by all means share them with a tutorial.

arthur - August 8, 2006 07:03 AM (GMT)
Alright, here goes nothing...

Screenshot tutorial

(taking screenshots from your favorite DB episode and preparing it for further use)

Ok, this is my first tutorial so be gentle :)

First thing's first. You can't prepare a screenshot for further use if you don't have one. Not to worry, the almighty internet will help. OH NO! ISP (Intenet Service Provider) doesn't supply you with the internet! Noooooo! Now you will have to wait a whole day for the ISP to fix things up.

Not to worry! You have a neat little player called BSPlayer! Yay! But what's so special about it? Oh lookie, it supports embedded subtitles, .ogm media, skins, has multiple languages, and more! But that's not what we want at the moment. One of the main purposes I use BSPlayer is because it can capture frames(screenshots) of your video with a push of a button [P].

It can be downloaded for free at http://www.bsplayer.org

Ok, I've got an old version of it that I've downloaded some time ago but I still love it the way it is. And I've opened the episode and found the scene I want to capture.

user posted image

Ok, this is a common issue. I captured this screenshot with the [Prnt Sc/SysRq] button. Due to some problem with RGB video output you can't see the screenshot of the episode :(. That's why we're using BSPlayer!

Now before we press [P], we need to know where this mysterious BSPlayer will put our picture, eh? Find a user posted image icon and press it. Then in the general tab you should see this.

user posted image

I don't know what those formats mean but lets not get into science. Change the screen cap dir to the one you want, because if the directory does not exist you won't find them. Then define the format of the picture, I use jpeg. Finally you might want to change the name of your pictures. If you want to know what these %F and %A3 mean then just position your mouse over the text field and read the pop-up hint.

Ok, so I've pressed the button (hope you did the same) And this is what I've got.

user posted image

Hmm... not good, now is it? Not to worry, we'll fix that soon!

Ok, I've got my Photoshop running and the image is loaded. Press [c] for crop tool and drag box, don't bother being precise. Like so.

user posted image

Then zoom in with [Ctrl] + [+] and adjust the border to perfect fit you want and press [Enter]. You will have the image cropped. And the result should be like this.

user posted image

I spy with my little eye something not good for a screenshot...

user posted image

The logo! Oh, no! Now my screenshot is ruined! Nooo!

Don't stab yourself with a knife, yet because I've got a solution!

The Clone Stamp Tool!

Yes! You heard right. The Clone Stamp Tool. Here's the icon and a toolbar that appears when you click on it.

user posted image

Settings should be similar to mine by default. Now zoom in the logo ant [Alt] + click mear the logo near the red dot.

user posted image

Nothing happened! Actually, it did. You've just set the starting point for our cloning. You'll get the idea how it works after some practice.

arthur - August 8, 2006 11:48 AM (GMT)
Now, when you click the left mouse button and start dragging towards the logo you see this.

user posted image

The cross is what you are cloning and the circle is where to you are cloning. (Like copy-paste). Remember that the cross takes the color from the image we alt-clicked, not the image we see. To make it sound simple, we just slide the color. So, by placing new start points and cloning the logo away from all sides you will get something like this.

user posted image

See, it's gone. Now don't get upset if you don't get it right for the first time. Nothing in life is done perfect the first time.

Ok, we've got our screenshot clean and you can pat yourself on the back after saving this image. (In Photoshop, if you're going to use the image in web, it's best to use File>Save for web. It usually is more conservative in space than plain Save.)

If you want to tweak the image the continue reading.

You might want to sharpen the image slightly. The icon looks like this.

user posted image

It's right under the eraser. If you don't see it then click and hold the icon and select the sharpen tool from the pop-up menu.

Be careful using the sharpen tool! The result of improper use is.

user posted image

Ruined, isn't it? Make the preferences as seen above, click and hold outside the picture and make a quick drag towards the other end. After a few failures you'll familiarise yourself with the tool. That will sharpen your image slightly.

Also you might want to doodle around with the colors and stuff like that.

Go to Image>Adjustments>Levels or hit [Ctrl]+[L] now you might not understand what's going on, it's simple really.

user posted image

Do as shown in picture below. See the results and compare.

user posted image

Ond now for the contrast and brightness. Go to Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast.

user posted image

Moving the brightness slider to the right gives the image more whites and to the left - more darks. I rarely go over +10 as it makes the image too light.

Moving the contrast slider to the left gives the image more greyish colors. Whereas sliding to the right makes the colors differ one from other. Try it and see for yourself. And again, I seldom go over +20 and almost never go towards the minus.

Now you've got a neat screenshot ready for further use. But wait! Why not play around with the colors!

Go to Image>Adjustments>Color balance or just hit [Ctrl+][B]. We now see this pop up.

user posted image

Moving the sliders towards one or other side adds more of the corresponding color. After playing around you might see this.

user posted image

Go practice around to get the feeling how it's done.

[I haven't used the Gimp or any other picture editing programs but I'm positive that they are alike.]

Well, that's all for now. Hope this tutorial was useful.
