Title: Literary/historical/mythological References
Description: what first interested me in the show

I'm sure everyone's noticed them, especially the obvious ones (i.e the allusion to King Arthur legends). I just love the writers for throwing them in liberally along with names that seem to be a play on words. I especially love the Beau - Beaucephalis connection (I'm completely obsessed with Alexander the Great...the man...not the movie).

A few lines have even made me wonder. In Paynn Rising, which I watched this morning, one of Connors lines was: "Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated." Mark Twain, anyone? ^_^ Maybe I'm reaching with that one a bit, but it made me giggle all the same.

The Furox - July 8, 2006 11:17 PM (GMT)
No, I don't think you're reaching at all. I'm sure that's where that line came from. :)

I think the references are kind of fun as well. They're basically easter eggs for the older viewers to notice in my opinion. Beau's name referencing Alexander the Great's horse I found amusing. It wasn't until i looked it up that I found that his horse didn't allow anyone else to ride him (according to legend) and also that "Bucephalus" means "ox head" which refers to the fact that the horse had a really big head, all of which certainly applies to Beau. :D

I've tried to document all the character name references on the Character Reference Page on dragon-city.org. If you know of any I've missed, please let me know.

I glanced over your reference page and noticed a couple of things. I wouldn't swear to any of this though:

I assumed Rivett's name was derived from the word "rivet". I think it's some kind of metal fastening which made sense to me, given all of Rivett's neat little gadgets. Then again, I only know the word from "rivit", which is something of a industrial style of music - and the source of the affectionate term "rivithead", a branch of my gothic brethren ^-~. Hey, Rivett looked pretty goth to me.

I also noticed there was no Sentrus. There's always the sort of obvious word "Century" that it could be derived from, but the Latin word "sentio" comes to mind. I took Latin for two years and it really didn't do me much good, but I'm pretty sure sentio means to offer opinions/to judge. Since Sentrus is the one who chooses who joins the Academy, "sentio" seems like a possibility.

The Furox - July 9, 2006 03:12 AM (GMT)
A rivet is indeed a metal fastener, but I didn't see how that applied to his character. Given that they already used Ken Faier's name for Commander Faier, it seemed more likely they picked Gail's name as another in-joke. Though rivet as a verb can also mean to attract and completely engross, and Rivett does seem to have an engrossing personality. :D

I think Sentrus is probably derived from sentry. She's a sort of gate-keeper since she decides who gets into the Academy, so that seems to fit. The only reason I haven't listed her yet is that episode hasn't aired here. I should probably go ahead and add it. :)

Well yes of course. Remember that one time in No Paynn, No Gain, where she was pretty much guarding the halls? Except in the shadows?

Don't forget the chin. :D

Scene: Interior hallway of the Academy, the crew creep quietly along to avoid detection, passing a dark alcove where Sentrus is watching them go by; Artha consults Rivitt`s device...

The crew pretty much passes by, and in the shadows Sentrus appears, scowling i think.

Heh, well, she looked pretty indifferent to me and...not to drag this off topic...but was it ever confirmed that Sentrus is Zulay? I mean, for the love of- she looks just like Moordryd! Either she's his mother or the animators were seriously running out of good ideas for character designs.

But I don't like spoilers. I prefer not knowing anything about an episode before I watch it the first time. :P

Hey, are you making fun of Beau?

Me? No way! :) For me, Beau is the most likable character in the whole show. :D

I think his chin is very distinguished looking. ;)
