Title: Gargoyles Fan Convention In Los Angeles
Description: Anyone Going?

The Furox - June 13, 2006 01:49 AM (GMT)
The 10th Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles is being held in Los Angeles June 23-26. (Actually, it's in Valencia which is just a little ways north of LA.) This is the fan convention for Disney's Gargoyles TV series. It's only a few hours drive from where I live, so I plan to go to this one. They held it in LA once before and I had a great time there. Greg Weisman who created the series will be there, along with the writers and a bunch of people from the voice cast. There are also going to be people there who have worked on W.I.T.C.H., Kim Possible, TaleSpin and the Hellboy direct video features that are currently in production. The web site above has all the details.

By any chance, do we have any other members here in the LA area who are planning on going?

Your Lucky! When they have one in Canada I will probaly go. But I here they are fantastic and some of the fans costume are gorgeous. Have fun! Usually the creator Greg Weisman doesn't always come so that is cool that he is coming to this one. You will have to tell me how it was.

Airshadow - June 13, 2006 03:33 AM (GMT)
will go anyone related with Db's production?

Believe it or not, the convention has already been to Canada! In 2004, the convention was held in Montreal. Next year it's going to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. That's Dolly Parton's home town, but whether that had anything to do with the choice, I don't know. :D The convention has never been to the mid-Atlantic region before, so that could be the reason. Not sure where the convention will go after that.

Yeah, the costumes are pretty cool. :) The last convention that was held in LA was at a big hotel next Universal Studios theme park in Hollywood. The number of convention attendees was small compared to the size of the hotel, so there were lots tourists from out of town who had no idea what was going on. We heard that some of the other hotel guests who weren't used to things like this were freaking out about all the people dressed up as gargoyles and wizards. They thought their was a devil worship thing or some other occult thing going on. :D

Unfortunately, not. I searched through the guest list, but no one with a Dragon Booster credit is there. I do plan to post a Dragon Booster sign on the message board at the convention to see if any other fans want to link up while there.

Should be a fun weekend no matter what. :)

On the first season of Gargoyles for DVD they showed a little clip of the gathering. Although I hear that the second DVD for season two may not come out because they did not sell what they wanted to of the first part of season two. Hopefully it does come out because it has some of the best episodes on i t. :(

That is indeed true. As of right now, Disney is holding back volume 2 of season 2 due to slow sales of volume 1. So all Gargoyles fans reading this should go out and buy the two DVDs that are already out or there may be no more.

The Gathering, 2006

I thought I'd post some photos I took at the convention so others can see what went on. It's kind of fun to see the people who make the shows. Note that these pictures are all rather grainy. The lighting was really poor in the rooms and I was usually too far away for a flash to work. So I had to shoot with a high ISO setting and just live with the grain.

Here's a shot of Greg Weisman at the opening ceremonies of the convention. Greg, of course, is the creator and producer of Gargoyles. The whole idea for the show is his, so this is the top guy:

From the left the people are:

Greg Weisman - creator

Micheal Reaves - writer and story editor

Fred Schaefer - development associate

Dave Schwartz - storyboard artist, also has worked on The Simpsons, Rugrats, Ninja Turtles and more.

Bob Kline - storyboard artist, also has worked on Gummi Bears, Tale Spin, Darkwing Duck, Bonkers and more.

In addition to the Gargoyles crew, they had people from other shows there as well. These two guys:

are Bob Schooley (left) and Mark McCorkle. Their most recent claim to fame is that they are the creators and producers for "Kim Possible". Prior to that, they were writers for the Aladdin TV series, the Buzz Lightyear TV series as well as the two direct video Aladdin movies.

Here we have another panel session, this time with Tad Stones (left) and Jim Cummings:

Tad has done tons of stuff with Disney TV animation: creator and producer for "Rescue Rangers" and "Darkwing Duck", producer for the "Aladdin" and "Buzz Lightyear" TV series and producer for both Aladdin direct video sequels. He has left Disney now and is working on direct video movies based on the "Hellboy" comics.

Jim Cummings is a voice actor who has done more voices than I could possibly list. Most notably, he is the voice of Darkwing Duck, Negaduck, Don Karnage, Steele in the movie "Balto", Winnie the Pooh and countless more.

This is Jymm Magon, creator and producer of Disney's "Tale Spin" and also writer for "A Goofy Movie". He was also writer and/or story editor on shows like Gummi Bears, Rescue Rangers, Good Troop and Winnie the Pooh.

Brigitte Bako - voice of Angela
Morgan Shepherd - voice of Odin and Petros Xanatos
Keith David - voice of Goliath
Thom Adcox - voice of Lexington

At each convention, they do a "radio play". This is where they take the script for an episode of Gargoyles and perform is like an old fashion radio show. Fans audition to be in it and are cast in the various parts. Plus they always throw in a couple of real voice actors to make it fun. Greg Weisman reads a narration to fill in the action you would normally be seeing. For this convention, they did the episode "The Mirror". This is the cast as the show is about to begin:

Here are a few closer shots:

The guy on the left in the red shirt is a fan, but the guy next to him is Crispin Freeman. He's a voice actor who's done tons of roles. If you watch "Ghost in the Shell", he's the voice of Togusa.

Here we have Keith David on the left, the real voice of Goliath, reading the part for Goliath in the radio play. That was pretty cool. Next to him is a fan reading the part of Elisa. Next is Thom Adcox, the real voice of Lexington, reading the part of Lexington, and on the end is another fan (who happens to be a friend of mine) reading the part for Brooklyn.

(That's the ten image limit per posting. More in the next posting.)

The radio plays are quite fun. :)

Sunday night was the banquet dinner. The guests for this were Greg plus numerous folks from the production team: storyboard artists, writers, story editors and a couple of voice actors:

The last big event at the convention is the costume contest. Keep in mind that these are all home-made costumes created by the fans themselves. There were prize categories for both canon and non-canon characters. This person came as an original (non-canon) gargoyle:

This one came as Princess Katherine:

This guy is an original gargoyle character. Note that the wings can fold and unfold. It was pretty cool:

This guy's costume was pretty cool. It created a very convincing illusion of digitigrade legs.

This woman came as Fox wearing the Eye of Odin:

The Gargoyles conventions are definitely fun. This is the second one I've been to (there have been ten altogether). Next year's convention will be held in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. That's Dolly Parton's home town, but I think they picked it because they haven't held the convention in the mid-Atlantic states yet.

Hope you liked the photos. :)

Airshadow - July 3, 2006 11:33 AM (GMT)
YAH I likie it :D:D:D:D

Glad that you have fun :D

IbanezJFS - July 3, 2006 12:32 PM (GMT)
As much as I LOVED the show Gargoyles...I aint dressing up. I also hope that they will put out Season 2 valume 2 on DVD. And maybe in the distant future...Get back on there air. Hey, they did for Family Guy and Celebirty DeathMatch. And, we are working on Dragon Booster. So...who knows.

LightningFlash - July 4, 2006 06:04 AM (GMT)
Looks like fun. :)

In the first two pics, did the guys on the ends of the table switch shirts?

Aww, you're no fun. :D

Actually, it's rather unlikely that I would ever get into a costume either, but costume contests at fan conventions are always fun to watch. I always get a kick out of what they come up with. Though the ones at anime conventions can get a bit repetitious since you always get a bus-load of people dressing up as either Inuyasha or Ed from FMA. :D

What was funny during the costume contest was that there was a wedding reception going on in the next ballroom over. So there were all these people attending the reception dressed in formal-wear looking at all the people in Gargoyles costumes and wondering what the heck was going on. :D

:D It almost looks that way, doesn't it. :) Those Hawaiian style shirts seem to be popular in LA.

IbanezJFS - July 5, 2006 05:22 AM (GMT)
OK then, let me refrase. If I were to dress up in a costume for a contest...It depends on what the prizes are. The only custume contest I ever enterd was... A costume contest for Rob Zombie's movie "House Of 1000 Corpses". And, the prize was an autographed poster signd by the cast and Rob Zombie. All I did was make a mask of 1 of the charecters wore at the dinner table. It was a mask of what the grandfather wore. And, you had to take a picture showing that you saw the movie. So I put on the mask, Stood in front of the movie poster, had my older brother take a picture and submitted it. Now keep in mind. I didnt dress up like the Grandpa completely. I wore my OZZFEST 2002 shirt (Wich Rob Zombie tourd on) and long black pants.......AND I WON. Im not sure how many winners there was but I was 1 of them. :cookie:

(And, that was a big start for my autograph collection)

I loved those photos, Furox. I get it that the next gathering is in LA in Summer 2009. I will keep up to date, and I hope there would be more in the future.

The Furox - July 19, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah, looks like the con is back in LA again next year. I'm not sure if I can go or not since that's the same time frame as the roller coaster conventions I usually go to (so many conventions, so little time... :), but we'll see!

If anyone else thinks they might go, please say so.

And glad you liked the photos, Arthapenn. They're fun cons to go to. :)

Arthapenn - July 20, 2008 08:02 AM (GMT)
You are a fun person, Furox. You have so many photos, and I am always impressed. It is sad you may not go for the next Fan Convention. Between the two events, I would go for Gargoyles Fan Convention. I am not into rollercoasters like you, but I do not mind dressing up as a gargoyle or puck.

Lancepenn - July 20, 2008 09:57 AM (GMT)
If my health permits me to go, I will go. You never know what can happen in 12 months.
