Title: Secondary Colors In The Skin
Description: An oberservation on Fracshun

Nemi the Nen - May 21, 2006 10:08 PM (GMT)
Secondary colors show up in a dragons skin if it's diffrent from their bones, right? So here I am looking at Fracshun in the background of our beloved board, and on the right hand side Fracshun's torso lines up with Beau's chin laterally.

There are no yellow dragons. And I admit there are no navy blue dragons.

But both of them were bred in Penn stables and Fracshun's yellow read seems to be the same color as Beau's stripe. Is it just me? am I insane? Why is this happening/true? Are they related? Is Fracshun a Blue and Gold Dragon of uh...not legend?

It's certainly possible, but because of how different they look and that Fracshun doesn't appear to have any special powers I doubt it. While yellow dragons don't seem to exist, I'm pretty sure other dragons have yellow spots on them (Phorrj seems to have orange-yellow stripes, for example, and yet Pyrrah's secondaries are Green and White, meaning that gold remnant would likely be more compatible for her than a dragon with Orange secondary). And one might as well argue that since Wyldfyr's eye on the board picture looks yellow, that means gold influence there too.

But canon says nothing about eye color. Only that hide color shows secondary draconium influances (or am I confusing fanon with canon? We don't have much fanon so I don't think so).

I wonder where the yellow pigment comes from, a throwback to gold? Possibly a draconium type that's unstable and thus can't develop into a dragon and thus is unquantified and unqualified? Possibly the same thing for navy blue?

Almost all dragons have their eyes color yellow... ALMOST all, that doesn't mean that almost all dragons have gold in their bones, which is quite unprobable.... We all know that Beau is the only PURE Gold Dragon, Although normal dragons (non super powered ones) might have what was left of gold before people started to mix and to create new draconium colors..

Scales.. I just confused myself... ><

oh well.. any opinions??

Well, Black, Green, Red and Blue make gold. And we know that dragons in eggs can be effected by outside sources of draconium.

So maybe if a dragon is exposed to all colors, or colors they don't have (ie Phorjj exposed to green blue and black) they develop some goldness.

Fracshun is younger than Beau, Beau is powerful, so maybe the gold power from beau around Fracshun's egg effected him? I mean he has more yellow/gold on him than any other dragon except abbaddon

I would describe Fracshun's torso color as orange myself, not yellow or gold. Color perception is subjective of course, but Fracshun's color is distinctly orange on my calibrated monitor and quite different from Beau's yellow/gold stripe.

Orange is also listed as one of Lance's secondary draconium influences, though we've never been told how a rider's draconium influence lines up with their dragon's (if at all).

Lance's draconium colors are listed as blue, white, light green and orange, and Fracshun appears to be orange, blue, white and black. Blue is listed as Fracshun's bone color, and his body shape (in particular, his head, neck and feet) matches other blue dragons we see. I'm not sure the black on him means anything. It could just be painted on him like the design on his flank. It's makes it hard to draw conclusions once you know people are painting their dragons. :D

It's also possible that some pigments show up on their skin that have nothing to do with their draconium colors. For example, Furox was about as pure a red dragon as you can get, but his colors were red, yellow and lavender. Where on earth did those last two colors come from? :D They look good on him and make him very intense looking, but those aren't draconium colors.

On Furox I suppose the yellow could be a sort of 'gold tribute' he was very pure, so he was closer to the orginal gold than say WyldFire.

Fracshun having Black secondary explains his navy blue markings in a...round about way if you think about it, a color not being able to fully express itself because the dominate color washes it out resulting in a combonation of the two. Maybe Furox has blue or light blue secondaries?

Kudos on the moniter, Furox, still yellow over here, ^-^

I always got the impression that fierce dragons like Furox had loud color schemes as a warning, sort of like those poisonous frogs in Central and South America. Those frogs have bright colors to warn predators not to eat them. So dangerous dragons like Furox could be brightly colored as a warning to others.

I also think it's fair to say that there's a considerable amount of artistic license taken by the character designers when it comes to the dragon's color patterns. Rob told us that a dragon's secondary color tends to show up on its skin, but this apparently isn't always the case since Wyldfyr is pretty much just shades of red with a little black. Makes it a bit hard to tell what's canon and what's just artistic license. :) In particular, I think there's a lot of artistic license with Fracshun's design. That design on his flank is just plain funny. :D

Still, I'm really glad they decided on colorful dragons. :D It's so much more interesting than if they had just gone with the traditional green and brown reptile colors.

In this topic I showed that the humans also wear their secondary colors:
