Press packet? Wow, the circus atmosphere grows. I imagine the BBC, CNN, Fox News, God TV, and all the major news papers will be in attendance vying for the carl scoop.

John Collins - June 12, 2008 10:38 PM (GMT)
Thanks Daved.

re: the Factsheet: Carl often spoke of his time with the Gideon's, Youth for Christ, etc. As recently as the sermon played on Grace Hour this morning. Yet -- no mention of any of that. No mention of the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church. He obviously wasn't ashamed of that past -- it was also mentioned in this morning's sermon.

Didn't he also buy a DD degree from Clarksville? Only the LLD is mentioned. How come?

If he didn't start pastoring in Lenox until 1979, who was the pastor when I moved there in 1978? I always thought he was...

Host of gh and pastor of gg until 2005? They refererd to him as the host and as pastor until the day he died -- and even since then...

Words have meaning. Is there a difference between rewriting / spit-shining history and lying?

sidethorn - June 12, 2008 10:43 PM (GMT)
This may be the biggest circus and freak show ever held at the Plaza. Carl will be remembered as some historic spiritual hero complete with massive amounts of adulation and wholesale idolatry. The madness goes on.

sidethorn - June 12, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
Of course Carl will be remembered the way that the GGWO insiders want to remember him, not the way he really was!!! If they wanted to be historically accurate in remembering Carl for what he actually did to people, they wouldn't be adulating him!!!!

hodeuon - June 12, 2008 11:33 PM (GMT)
It looks like they dealt pretty accurately with the radio program.

John, I have the move to Lenox in my notes as being 1976, so 1979 surprised me, too. But I could have a wrong date easily enough.

Awe,
you don't need to be that polite.

You state it so delicately. ;)

I can verify that the move was in 1976. The people started moving from So. Berwick in the spring of '76. By summer of 1976, the So. Berwick property had been filled with new residents who chose to or were told to move there. Bruce Brown took over as "overseeing pastor" (another phrase I hate).

carl was the only overseeing pastor of Lenox, anyone that says any different is mistaken.

P.S.
There was a crew of workers (free labor) who went ahead of the rest of "the body" as was the tbs custom when a new property was obtained. Usually Ed Canino headed up the work crews.

John, you are right both doctorates were purchased at the same time. When I saw the photo of Donna, Melody, carl, Paul, (back row) Steve and Bruce in front of the sign " Clarksville School of Theology" (Clarksville, Tenn.) it dawned on me that the whole family went with him when he received his bogus degrees. That was late winter/early spring 1976.

The above post was mine.

I received a memorial card for CHS in the mail today inviting me to his face to face service, live or via internet.

The GGWO marketing machine has come up with a winner - the "Carl Henry Steves Legacy Trust". You guessed it..........."dedicated to the preservation of his recording, notebooks, and papers from his years of public ministry".

The best I can come up with is a donation of "two red cents". Anyone care to beat that?

Tara, please don't take this personally. I'm not picking on you at all...

I AM however picking on gg for having to make up new words and terminology when the English language already has perfectly good words which hundreds of millions of people use and understand. If a CHURCH, which prides itself on its COMMUNICATION, really cared to communicate effectively, wouldn't it help if they used normal words with the normal meanings normal people ascribe to them?

I got so frustrated trying to figure out this infernal "face to face" term for a funeral or memorial service that I finally googled it. The first 5 pages of results listed sites using the term in many ways, such as
  • booking a face to face interpreter
  • a real estate company offering "Down to Earth Good Old Fashioned Face to Face Service"
  • Customers Value Face-To-Face Banking
  • Gay Men's Sexual Health Helpline And Face To Face Service
  • a site for those who "wish you could talk to someone face to face about your child support"
No funerals. No memorial services...

ps to Guest 300:
DeSoto Park on Saturday? You DO know where it is, right? B)

Graced out of there - June 13, 2008 03:40 AM (GMT)
Ok, I know it's been a long time since some of us drank the kool aid, but just for fun try to remember when we lived on every word from Stevens, every glance, etc. I know it's hard to think about, but get over it. Now think that there are hundreds of people that are worse than us--obviously worse cause they never left.

Imagine going to this service--the hype that you would feel--this is going to be the highlight of many of their lives. They will be so ready for delusion that anything could happen in their minds, Schaller and the gang can drop in anything in their thoughts and it will find a place in their open brains.

Then there will be the fanatics who were always out to lunch who might have dreams of Carl and more.

I wouldn't be surprised if they literally sell pictures of him and worse...the morketing opportunities here are incredible.

Oh come on John, don't you remember that CHS sanctified it as "the" spiritual word for funeral or memorial service. You are not spiritual if you don't use the term. Another expression of their elitism and arrogance.

"Greater Grace World Outreach is a Bible-centered ministry that seeks to help individuals and families grow in the grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ. We preach the Gospel and the whole counsel of God from a Finished Work perspective. We are a Christ-centered church that believes and practices the cardinal doctrines of the faith.
A local church established in Baltimore in 1987, we have been training men and women in the ministry of the Gospel ever since. Some of these people have gone on to plant churches and lead Bible studies in communities throughout Maryland and the United States. Many have answered God’s call to serve internationally. As a result, we have affiliated ministries in 70 countries. These ministries have established active churches, Bible colleges, grammar schools, and orphanages.
By the grace of God, we have been equipped to serve in very diverse ways through ministries such as The Grace Hour, our our international radio program, Maryland Bible College and Seminary, Greater Grace Christian Academy, and Grace Publications. Our extensive program of outreaches helps to build up believers to "seek and to save that which is lost," locally and abroad. "

This is from the Ministries-part. Count how many times it says "we" and "our". It gives quite a cliquish impression, doesn't it? Wouldn't a professional press release use 3rd person?

sidethorn - June 13, 2008 12:56 PM (GMT)
Looks like a lot of those GGWO pastors are more interested in praising themselves than praising God!!! These guys aren't exactly professional.

From the press packet

National and International Ministries:
• 423 Greater Grace churches in 70 countries
 50 churches in the United States, including 6 churches in Maryland
 373 in the rest of the world
• 850 full time workers and missionaries
• More than 120 Bible institutes
• Over 12 Christian schools
• A growing number of orphanages
• Children of Grace: ministering and supporting orphaned children in Africa

Please allow me to put it another way:
423 churches, 120 bible institutes, 12 christian schools and a growing number of orphanages all staffed by 850 full time workers and missionaries.

Now that is certainly another way to put it, guest2. Looks like a serious understaffing to me: on the average 1.53 workers per institute! Multitasking must be the key word among the GG workers and missionaries or the number of churches and the size of the bible institutes are highly exaggerated.

Edit: They do say full time workers, so the number of part-time workers can be really high, too. I know that there are missionaries and senior pastors that are only part-time workers in the church with no or very low salary from the church.

Guest - June 14, 2008 12:33 PM (GMT)
GGWO Missions Department also counts any foreigner who has been to MBC&S or was on a long-term visit to Baltimore as a missionary in their home country--so that really inflates the numbers.

Special Evening of Praise with Pastor Schaller
On the eve of the Face to Face Service for our beloved founding pastor Dr. Carl Stevens we welcome the many visitors and local church members to join P. Schaller a at the GGWO Chapel for a time of singing, prayer, and testimonies

(A gg friend of mine said it was Praise and testimonies of chs -- and friend did not think it at all strange that Friday evening was NOT praise and testimonies of GOD's work in our lives)-
