Title: Hartford?
Description: Discuss Hartford, Mawaka, and others.

out and about - October 15, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
Hello fellow discussers,

I thought I would start a new topic. I am curious as to who knows what he (Mawaka) is up to these days?

The last I heard was that the after the Hartford, CT church disaffiliated, many fleed, not because they wanted to remain a part of the Borg, but because he didn't change his message from that of GG.
After he saw the writing on the wall, and couldn't continue to pay the lease, he sold the building for $1.5 Million. I wonder how long he can live off the profits for?

Sounds a bit like "Tacoma" doesn't it?

Now, there is a remnant of die hard Stevens and Schallerites that are continuing the "Legacy" by starting a new GG church/churches in the Hartford area.

Would anyone else like to chime in?

Who are they going to send up there? One of the leaders of the Lolly Pop Guild. I mean one of the Veaders! Those little midgets will start judo choping everyone who doesn't submit.

No, my guess is that there are some still in CT that wanted to stay with GG, so they would probably be the ones to keep a goin'. I think Tom Murphy is one of the ones involved. I've seen his name pop up as one of the callers on GH from CT.

All one needs to do is drive by the home and see the new vehicles in the driveway to know what he is up to. Same old thing. Wonder where he got the money for all that! BTW, some of the "leadership" have also experienced an amazing windfall of new "stuff". Hmmmm! Amazing how a church with so few members left can afford to support their pastor and leadership is such a beautiful way financially. Or do you suppose....? Nah, no way. He would never have the gall to take from the sale of the building. Hmmmm

Anon,

That is just sick. Is the church still happening? There can't be more than 20 ppl left in his clan. I guess he can't live off their support alone, so I wouldn't be surprised if he dipped into the funds from the sale of the building. I tried searching for an online record of the sale of the building, but couldn't find much as to how much it was sold for.

That would be interesting to know how much it was sold for and how much profit was made and where that profit went to.

OWT - January 27, 2008 01:53 AM (GMT)
I believe the building sold for 1.2m and he, I mean the church netted about 800k. I also believe he hasn't been bashful about having expenditures justified that in most others' opinions wouldn't be ethical. That would include Jesus. I don't think he's going to change his ways now. Not with that boatload sitting there. The only restraint in the past was due to lean times where paying the mortgage was a priority. Can't lose the building with all that equity. Believe it or not the second priority was the addtional $100 per month to pay down the principle on his house.

As far as the Mawakas go, they are down to a small handful. Maybe a dozen adults. He would rather have it that way now. No need for funds now that they can milk the cow. Less people, less being bothered. Can you say retirement? Although he always promoted his busy schedule he always had more down time than anyone else. Sat in the office, bullied the students, had coffee fetched, got his dog walked, played on the computer reading junk emails and day trading, gone at noon for afternoon nap at home, he just never wanted to work and scammed the body of Christ. He's a fraud. He sold his nuts for 30 pieces of silver and became Phyllis. Lizard, a.k.a. Carella DeVille, runs the whole show. Ever call him at home and have a discussion and hear her chirping dictating to him what to say?

I'm being nice. Ask me not to be.

I always felt uneasy having to talk to Liz. Cruella DeVille is a good comparison. I'm glad that I never was in the school while she was the principal. I feel sorry for any of the students that had to endure her dictatorship.

OWT, you sound like you were pretty involved in the church there.
Were you there previous to 1991?

Unfortunately, yes. It was around that time it started to smell. Shortly thereafter some leadership escaped under the guise of an opportunity (opinion). Carella rose in power. I stayed way too long at the expense of my family. I hoped all during that time that they would move on. He claimed he was offered MBC & S presidents post. And there were strong bonds among many of us. Alas, had I known the extent of Greater Disgrace I would have left sooner. I was horrified to discover Hartford was a Lenox/Baltimore wannabee.

We are the sons of John D. Thomas. We will join our powers with our father to make a tremendous unity of love and bafflement. We can no longer let our family name be spoken from the lips of traitors of the Holy'est Holy work from His Lordship Philip Mawaka. We will sing and dance naked drinking mead before our king! Ablah Ablah Ablah and so it is written not.

P.S. Just kidding... If anyone needs to get in touch with John Thomas let me know. I am Evan his #2. thanks

Maxine, I found this at: www.carlstevens.org

It is part of Dave Drago's story, called: "How I moved towards closure"

"Hartford was a very unusual year in my life. Chris and I lived in a little apartment in the South End of Hartford (30 Redding Street). This street intersects with Franklin Ave. with all the great Italian Cuisine. We enjoyed the great food. I worked in the church visiting our older members, visiting the sick in the hospital and soul winning. I also started a bible study in East Hartford at Connie D.’s house. This bible study was the highlight of our stay in Hartford. Connie is one of the sweetest people I know. We also became great friends with Vic and Mary Acca, and we still are today. Joe Vecchiola, Dave Stambovsky, Frank Ventrella, and Paul Paradis were all there.

"Now, I love Pastor Mawaka. However, he could be very encouraging but also very harsh. I had much growing to do and I needed a little nurturing." He took with an illness during this time and I was in the office by myself on many days. I took a fulltime job at an Auto Rental Company and stuck with the bible study but dropped the other areas. The bible study was growing and I remember P. Mawaka came one week to check it out…things were a little awkward between us after that. My wife was also not too comfortable. She felt like we were put under a microscope by him. I know P. Mawaka was disappointed in me…I got over it. Our relationship became a little strained during this time. "I was learning how to adjust to being hurt and misunderstood and have those you care about disagree with and be disappointed in you." I was learning that God is my sufficiency. I wondered about what God was calling me to do in my life. I look back now and I see too much interference (even though it was sincerely to help) in our lives. The unsolicited advice brought confusion, hurt and also made decisions a little harder for us."

That's all...

Well now... Phil Mawaka is like any other greater grace pastor...a King in his own little Kingdom...not to be questioned or threatened or challenged in any way...what a crock....I am SO thankful not to be caught up in that phony spiritual hierarchy any more. Looking back, they were all alike.... different personalities, but the same "touch not God's anointed" mindset. To see the pastors in other churches treated as normal human beings was a reality check for sure. Now I do not even go to a church because I am rather disillusioned with the hypocrisy and lip service of so many. Perhaps I will again some day but for now I find a freedom in not going. There are not too many that appeal to me in my area anyway. Not that I think I am better in any way, but I am definitely not becoming better by any I have attended

I was born and raised in the Mawakas' organization. His abuse and distortion of his 'spiritual position' was enough to sicken me at thirteen years old. Eventually, many others opened their eyes to his manipulation and perversion and his following ultimately degraded to a miserable handful. He openly took advantage of so many amiable people, demanding personal and financial sacrifice in the name of God. He abused his position in the church to provide himself with relative luxury. He openly berated people from his pulpit when they made personal decisions he did not approve of. I am thankful that so many of his followers have moved on to healthier lives, and encourage them to not blame themselves, God, or their loved ones for their involvement.

As for the Mawakas, I take joy in knowing they rot in their old age - abandoned and exposed. I love knowing that 'no matter how they slice it' nothing can mitigate the truth that they know deep inside - no matter what they tell themselves or others.

If you're filing a lawsuit, writing a book, or just curious about this small, relatively unexposed corner of the abomination that has been GGWO, feel free to email me. zack860@hotmail.com

didn't the Mawakas come into the ministry through the Springfield church? And then they started the branch in Hartford. I also remember they adopted a black child...he must be in his 20s now...how did that work out, and is their son still in the church with them? They may have even adopted more than one, but I do remember the one

Wow! All I want to say right now is I want to apologize. To all those who may have been affected by a comment attributed to me. Mawaka often brought it up in the pulpit. "You can never go wrong listening to your pastor." I am truly sorry if that comment affected you even in the slightest. I have personally apologized to many but in case you are one I haven't seen please accept. Maybe more another time. Interesting place here.

I do think they know they need to be careful how they spend. They are aware the IRS has an eye on them. Can't jeopardize the tax exempt status. I've also heard there was a lawsuit coming their way. That was awhile back, however.

Your posts about this guy in CT is yet another example of a man who learned well to take advantage of people using Jesus and the Bible. These stories are repeated over and over since The Bible Speaks was in Maine. Should we be surprised and aghast? Carl Stevens was never anything but a master con-artist. Carl Stevens did not take a wrong turn. He learned that he could use his gift of gab coupled with evangelical Christianity to get lots of money, adulation, and vulnerable young ladies to feed his ego. Many of the folks who were leaders in GGWO who have left since the internet exposed the place have just moved on to continue the con elsewhere. It is their bread and butter and has very little to do with caring about God. God is just a front.

How true Louise. Carl and his men used evangelical Christianity to fleece people for their own gain for many years. They ran their own sect by getting into peoples' heads and reprogramming them to serve men while thinking they were serving God. What a sick way to use peoples' love for God against them. Then to top it off, they use that geographical will and one pastor for life nonsense to coerce the people to stay in the fold forever to be used forever. It was all like a business to them. Just use the people, coerce them to hand over lots of money and blindly worship the leaders and you end up with a perpetual cult machine. Its all about the leaders, the people are there to be used and are expendable too!!!
