Ok this isn't gonna be a fancy review like krossfires.
I just played this game round my mates house, and this is my view of it.
The game itself plays alright, taking a bit of time to get used to some of the new controles, also Neversoft seam to finally got the scale of the character right.
The new system of skating for long enough and earning stats as you go (as in do 10,000 overall rotations and get a stat) seams to work well, as well as nail the trick was quite fun, if not rather hard to get to grips with.
The game itself is fine for anyone who is a diehard fan of the series or who just likes to mess around on them, but I cant help but get the feeling the game has been rushed.
The game seams to be using a hybrid of the phyisics engine's used in THAW and THUG 2, and the graphics engine also feels like a re-worked THAW version.
Other than nail the tricks and a few other bits and peices there dosnt seam to be alot different from THAW (other than quite a few things taken out, such as create a park)
(I would like to point out at this time that the PS3 version is different, using the new Graphics and Phyisics engines, with other stuff left in)
During my 3 hours or so of playing I noticed several things:
1: The game seams to be plagued by small annoying glitches, like the inability to get over some small walls (the character keeps trying but gets stuck), or just skating along and you try going over a ramp and get stuck in it
2. The actual game play, while it does require getting used to, it just dosnt feel smooth and natural, it also seems a bit to fast (plus any fans of having autokick turned off, you cant do that anymore)
3. One thing I did notice when glitching the game purposly to get out of a level was that this does seem to be a direct port from the Ps3 or xbox, which has been segmented into levels, I got outside a level and found the remains of another level outside (when I say remains, I been some bleachers where the level joins on, on the PS3 version)
4. The game dosnt seem very long, with only 7-8 levels, (and my friend has only had this 4 days, and has one left to unlock) although, if you want to compleat it 100% you need to be sick level to get all the stat points (now called Stokens!)
Also for the game length, you start off on the leader board at #200, and after 4 days my friend is rank #18 .
Anyway for my overall review:
Gameplay: 7.5/10 - Its a traditional Tony Hawk game, and if you like that then Im sure you'd like this, the bugs arnt overly annoying and you will get used to it. One good point is that finally each skater is indevidual, with their own proper style of skating, (After Neversoft did some motion capture) this isnt as evident in the PS2 version as it is in the PS3 or Xbox, but its still there, and a welcome change.
Graphics: 7/10 - It looks slightly better than THAW, but I was exspecting slightly more, although the character models have been inhanced alot more than previouse games
Sounds: N/A - All your tyipical skating sounds are there, same as always
Control: 5/10 - Although the control's have change very little, I did not like the decreased amount of controle I had over the character with-out the ability to turn off autokick, and the fact that now the square button is the manual button. All things that you would get used to with time. But on the plus side, the new nail the tricks is pretty sweet, and most of the original control set up is still there, so hardend fans wont have much trouble getting to grips with it
Replay Value: 3/10 - To be honest, I just dont think that this will have any incentive to make you want to play it again after you finish it
Overall 6/10 - Not the best game Neversoft have come out with, personally I still like THAW, but the new slightly more realistic phyisics do make it better. I myself shall be waiting for the PS3 and get it then :D
Can't decide to get it for PSP or PS2, is there an ISO for project 8?
I got this game on my ps2..
Its brilliant, definatly the best skateboarding game..
I love slowing down time and doing nail the trick, its sooo realistic.
If theres something you cant do in real life with your feet, you cant do it in the game.
But it is short, but hard.
