Title: To the Junk Yard...
Description: How to smash up a VW Beetle

Smashing Up a Beetle
In this tutorial (which is long overdue) I will teach you how to make this transformation

1. Ok first things first, you’ll need the original image

And you’ll be needing another image of wreckage, for this tutorial you can use the same one I did (incidentally it is also a VW)

2. Now open both of them up in Photoshop, and get ready to begin. First off make a new transparent layer on the beetle, then make a selection of the damage you want to do to your beetle, then drag it onto the beetle’s new layer, position it where you want it to be (I found it helped to make it’s opacity 50% or less so I could see the beetle underneath)

3. Now cut off any parts of the damage that you don’t want, as I have done with removing the part that went over the door. You can make this as jagged as you want (I mean it is damage isn’t it) Clean up everything up, then click on the little “f” in the Black circle in the bottom right corner and go to “drop shadow”

4. This part is all about how it looks to you, just give it a shadow that makes it blend to the car nicely, as if it is part of it. You may need to give the damage part a slight Gaussian blur to make it look natural. It should look something like this

5. From this point onwards I was adding dents and deforming the cars shape all the time, I’d make a change to a layer, then come back and change it again later so it looked better (so bare that in mind when you do yours) Most of the body deformation was done in one block, But I kept going back and tweaking layers)

6. Now depending whether or not you want to make the light coming out, like mine , or just gone will decide whether you do this part or not. If you decide to have it hanging out, the idea is simple, first you will want to have a section cut out where the light should be (fig 1) then have the original light, and free transform it, then in the white space you will need to add some more of the damage, and then apply the same settings for the drop shadow as before like so (fig 2).

7. Now just add the light where you want it to be (fig 3), and on the damage layer draw in the wire connecting it (fig 2) (for extra effect you can make the glass look smashed just by using a thin brush and hand drawing it in)

8. Now for Physical damage like the front bumper, the 2 main basic things to remember are (1. if your deleting stuff, always use a layer map, so that if you take to much or you don’t like it you can put it back) and (2. The smudge tool is your friend)
Front Bumperuser posted image

For most of the deformations I used the smudge tool, which if used right just shifts the colour instead of smudging, either that or if it was a dent I used a different technique. For the crumpled bonnet I drew it in with a fine brush and a lot of patience (it took several attempts to get it looking right) and for the dent in the door, I took the Size 59 “splatter” brush and did a few short sprays on the door with white and just under white (this also took ages to get looking right) then I took the smudger and used as it was meant to I smudged it to make it look like it dented in at the middle.

This is the sort of thing you will need to experiment with for a while

9. Right we’re pretty much near the end with damage now, its more about presentation, with the beetles wing mirror it was another case like the front light (and the VW badge), and as for the door it was a new layer that was rotated to look like it was hanging off its hinges.

10. Now time for the fun stuff, Rust, Grime, Dust and Dirt!
For Rust round the big damage area we did first, I first off drew round it with a thickish brush, in brown (or rust), then added some noise and played around with the blend settings to make it look dark and as if it had been there a while (fig 4 + 5).

Grime and Dirt was relatively easy, basically create a new transparent layer and add a layer mask to it. Then get the 59 “splatter” brush again but choose a nice dark brown colour and (making sure your on the layer mask) go wild on the outline of the car (as so (Fig 6) it doesn’t matter if you go way over the line, once your finished, just clear it up using the mask (fig 7).

11. It’s almost finished, now all we need to do is add the Dust. For this you’ll need a new layer (transparent as always), now go to your 2 default colours and make the top one a nice lightish brown, and the bottom one a dark brown. Now go to Filter> Render> Clouds, then Filter> Render> Difference Clouds (x2) you should now have a rusty dusty looking layer.

12. Next step is to add a layer mask to this mess, and then click back on that Little “f” in the black circle again, now this time go to “Blending Options” at the top and you should get a box appear, move it so you can see your picture behind it (and make sure the Preview box is ticked) Now at the bottom of this box are two runners with 2 arrows on, experiment moving the arrows, then hold Alt and click on one (it should split in half like so (fig 8) Now do some more experimenting.

13. One you’ve got it how you like it, ok it and on your layer mask, get rid of any dust that is not on the car. It should now look like so (fig 9). Now play around with the blending options for the layer, I found that “Overlay” with an opacity of 75% worked nicely for mine.

The Final thing should now look somewhat like this
