Title: Google - To be watching you while you play
Snake Bite - May 15, 2007 08:43 AM (GMT)
I just read an article on IGN about a new Patent that Google has filed for an new type of In-game advertising.
The gist of this new advertising scheme is to monitor what games you play, for how long, and what kind of a player your are (eg. cautious, risk-taker, aggressive, non-confrontational, stealthy, honest, cooperative, uncooperative, etc) it also hints at monitoring User Dialog in RPG's and similar games to characterise you (eg literate, profane, blunt or polite, quiet etc).
It will then use this information to "tailor" the advertising to you, giving some examples (which are a bit ridiculous) such as:
QUOTE
Those who spend much of their in-game time communicating with others, might encounter ads for cell phones or other communication-based products.
Plus the fact that it monitors how long you've been playing, and say after an hour or two, may start to display ads for Pizza Hut or Coke.
Add that and that fact that Google can then sell on the details it collects about you, to quote the article
QUOTE
The information gathered in this manner could then be sold to advertisers for a pretty penny
Personally I'd say this is one step to far, we already get bombarded with spam and ad's over the internet, TV, Radio, and outside in the real world, and I don’t think its fare to turn the gaming community into One big ad revenue. <_<

I don't play online games, really. However I wouldn't mind games I play having ads in them, as long as they aren't pop-ups that interrupt the game or something. If they only appear during loading screens, or as interactive objects ( for example a coke machine standing somewhere ) I'd have no problem with that.
Besides it would also help bringing in revenue for the game creation companies, which would mean better games.

I would hate them, but they would be ok for loading screens, but if they popped up every single time in the game...

Anyone think Google's turning into a bit of a Microsoft?

Ok, this is a video of what Im talking about, personally I dont mind a few small ads, or as WB said, interactive objects, like coke machines.

Dont you think thats overdoing it, and detracting from the game play just a bit.
IMO, I get enough ads online, Tv radio etc. I dont want them in my games too.

I hate the feeling your being watched, but it does bring realism to the game. Aslong as it's like that and not 'OMGWTFHAX!!1 BUY THIS FREKIN DELL THING NOW!!1!' as in a pop-up.

Did you not find the fact that there where so many of them, and the fact that some of them are on Huge Billboards on the side of building slightly intrusive?
