Rumor: PSPs with non-downgradable firmware on its way to the stores?
Would you buy a PSP armed with a security feature that makes it hack proof?

According to Nadclovek from PSP-Spot (sourcing an EB Games Regional Manager in Calgary, Canada), new shipments of PlayStation Portables may sport higher firmware (4.xx) and retail at 169.99 CAD or around US$ 153.67. This might not be good for PSP sales to say the least.

Nadclovek says:

Sony was sending out Emails to its Commercial Retailers that all new PSPs to be sent out will have 'Downgradable Prevention' built right into them. All new PSPs to be shipped out as of next week Friday, May 18th, will be a higher firmware, 4.xx (specifics were not released), but they were promised to include new security features to prevent hacks and downgrades. Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3.

The report also mentions that it might have implications in North American PSP sales. While we doubt that it'll be the end of PSP hacking as we know it, but it's a sobering thought to say the least. For now though, we're still sticking this in the rumor bin until further notice. Stay tuned.

Well, whatever you think of it, it's a rumour and will stay that way until proven otherwise.

mmm nothing new just means a new firmware

sony has always tried stopping downgrading and by non-downgradable just means theres no downgrader yet

remember nothing is impossible except for for something to ne impossible

where theres a will theres a way

remember the unhackable vista with 5 major problems

dont worry about the psp community collapsing because lack of homebrew enabled psp worry about it bursting other ways sese

How exactly are they gonna make it downgrade proof? I mean isnt the firmware all just software, and that can always be hacked and cracked cant it? it just takes time. Unless their making it so that it doesnt have flash memory or something?
I dont really know the specifics of how PSP firmware works, could it possibly be some sort of Flash memeory that wont allow user created code.
Or somthing like M$ DRM on Vista, where on every connection it has to exchange a Permission Key?

Easy.
They almost did it with ta-082's. They basically made the psp if it ever encountered anything that smelt like 1.50
But then, DA aka Mr Marvellous manages to find a way to disguise the firmware from the psp. Probably by doing the software equivalent of rapping bacon round mr. 150

So, i'm sure the creators of the psp, SONY. Can devise something, but will the hackers strike back?

Yeah thats what I thought, unless its somthing with the Hardware then it's only a matter of time before an exsploit is found, and if it is hardware related then it will probably take longer.

IMO I think Sony should allow things like the Custom XMB stuff (via options in the Settings, cos that stuff is cool.

But they cant because of piracy and other bad homebrew <_<

also @ Emcp - Do you really want me to edit my post, or are you just joking?

emcp - May 10, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
if its hardware then it will take longer also i think sony is thinking of custom xmb because there was something about the ps3 maybe being more flexible with the xmb so more than likely if the ps3 has it psp will

but you have to remember that no matter what a machine HAS TO HAVE a backdoor for it to be developed upon

so it will get hack it just could be a day after release or 50 years time

and snake bite i was only joking and that is a good idea but if homebrew could run just after the first check it could disable the next checks

my thoughts: make the psp2 so we can hack it!!! B)
