The important thing is to make it easy to read.

Would it be possible to upload your turns and actions via the website?
Harbour Master - May 9, 2006 05:15 PM (GMT)
Yes thats what I want.
There has been a suggestion that we put up a beginners guide and get the moe experinced players to post hints and tips as well as a guide, would people like to see that on the site?

PLEASE do this -- . As a newbie I am tearing my hair out trying to work out what to post as a player ( now Tib ) and am frightened of not step on players or gm's toes, and I would also love to see some formal instrusitoin on how to post orders.
I am a Gm on the dip2000 site, but nearly always take on newbie games. I give the players a lot of slack, and can normaly see one turn ahead when a problem might accure ie mis-orders, failer to order a build etc etc. suttle hint works, ie if its only the first year and they forget something, I might rely with " Acknowledged thank you, you have X days to check or add to your orders".
If they dont, then its their fault.
I find that if the players have great fun in their first game, they become requlars on the site. That was how it happened to me, and I do try and GM as my first Gm did to myself.
Funny thing is that in this game of briny, there are two players who I am runnin in a dip game, so if they read this, they might want to put in an imput on how they think their game is being run, or just say that I am talking crap.
I have had lots of advice by private mail from players in this game, and I thank all who have sent CEW mail before his death. It was a great help to me.
But as a Gm on the dip2000 site, I can always point to a very well writting help FAQ, and to be honest, I have to spend ages looking at my printout of briny to see what might happen in a turn.
CEW sent in orders on his first ( and only, sob sob cry cry ) turn, not very sure on what happens on board a ship in a move.
This is my 2nd game of engard, the first was a normal one, but to be honest, I did not enjoy it very much, and after about 3 months real time, my person left.
In this game it is so different.
Loads of mail, and every one seams to be very friendly, and I am having a great time.
So, as I close this, I would also like to take the time to thank the GM's for running the game, the people in admin ( I do know how hard it is doing a job like that), and to the players who I have met both as a gerneral mail to CEW and priviatly.
One last thing, if anyone thinks that my spelling is shite, as per my home e-mail sig.

Thxs for the pat on the back Pete. yes I am now comvinced we must do a Beginners guide to briny to this end I would like to ask every one to send me some stuff to put on the new page and I wil also make some PDF sheet so they can down load it and the like.
If you want to cover the whole game do so, if you want to cover SL and SP then fine or even how to get a good result at sea then hey fill ya boots....

Not sure if this is the place to go on about this - I'm a hand-holding GM for new players. I'll look at a first turn and tell them if they can't do something, if they are "wasting" a week on a pre-monthly or no-time activity, and to be sure they use their weekends! (Elan En Garde has weekends.)
Generally the 2nd turn is much better.
I do recall getting a note with a suggestion after sending some Briny orders.
Something I've mentioned to a few players (and have been dealing with an Elkan player about this) is writing actions or dialog for another player character. I've since learned this is referred to as "God-mode", which is a great term!
Also I like to allow for another character to reply. Sometimes this gets awkward (Will this guy ever finish the conversation?), but it allows space for others to play.
For example, "It's a pleasure to meet you; I'm headed to the ship now." But not say that he leaves the other guy behind. It's open for the other character to say something else, go along to the ship, or end the conversation.

mmm ... would be nice if there was some hand holding for new GMs as well! With Matthias having to leave so suddenly, I wasn't in a position to advise on orders to new shipmates as it was past the deadline - I just had a pile of orders and character sheets sent to me and had to work it out (with excellent advice from Matthias and Red) and I mainly wanted to get it turned around quickly (which seems to me one of the most important things for the game).
The turn could have been resolved a day earlier, but after I had rolled such a large number of deaths I had to stop and think about it because I really didn't want to end so many promising new characters - CEW in particular because he had such an interesting character - or established ones with a strong history like Bartholomew Locke (not to mention Toby Juggs!). I thought long and hard about it, and was tempted to fudge it and make the rolls again, but in the end I decided that I don't want to be that kind of GM and I don't want Briny to be that kind of game - I will not play God and I will stick as exactly to the rules as I can because I think that EG at it's best is a mix of game play and roleplay. I see GMs as enablers and storytellers, not controllers.
But new players badly need advice and support, and I will try to get some basic guidance on turn structure and orders together to send to everyone, and I have been trying to advise people as and when they send their orders in.
It could be good if experienced players who are willing take on more of a mentor role for newer players, preferably in character. I got excellent advice from Matthew Walker, Tyler Brock and Andrew Goodman. If I had followed it I wouldn't have had two characters killed already!
You can take a horse to water ....

I agree one hundred percent. If the players lose trust in a GM, then the game will have no purpose. When a young lad used to play D and D. One GM was fantastic, the other, well, if he had spent 2 hours developing a trap, funny thing was, someone always tripped it. After a few games, no one wanted to play. The first GM, on the other hand, used to show us at game end the map he had made, along with the traps etc, etc.
I found that as we trusted him implicitly, when you achieved a goal, you had tremendous self satisfaction. When you died, you knew that that was done fair and square, and the grim reaper could take anyone, no mater how big or small.
