ok here are some of the more popular ones in Japan:

1 . Ayumi Hamaski- Ayumi has numerous anime themes including Escaflowne
Inuysha and Initial D. Her most popular songs are "Dearest",
Inuyasha movie theme, and "You".

2. Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts- Yoko Kanno has done soundtracks for so many
animes i cant even name em all but i can name a few,
cowboy bebop, escaflowne princess mononoke. She and her
band mostly do jazz type of music but also do some really
cool techno stuff. Her most popular songs are "Tank" and
"Dance Of Curse".

3. Do As Infinity- This group has done a few anime's most popular being Inuyasha
They do most of the slow songs on the movie and series.
There most popular song is "Fukai Mori" or "Deap Forest"

4. Puffi Amayumi- Puffi has done a little bit of work on animes. She did most of the
songs in piokemon and shes done some songs for Dance Dance
Revolution. Shes one of todays biggest j-pop stars along with
Ayumi Hamasaki.

Well those should get you started ill be posting regularly to update you on all the
latest j-pop/anime soundtrack news. Feel free to add anything if you want. weel peace for now.

Umm...those are *really really* generic. Most of them are only semi popular (besides Ayu that is)
You should check your sources before you talk about whats popular in Japan, but those are good bands/singers. I am willing to cover J Rock (which is more popular)
Here are some of my favorite J Rock bands, although most of them alre oldies

Dir En Grey-these guys are enchanters. Their dark lyrics and original style, and the beauty of what they wear all come together for an amazing live, making them one of the most popular bands of all time in Japan. I totallu reccomend them!

Hide-Although Hide is long past from out world, the Pink Spider will always be remewmbered in the hearts of real rockers. He had a crazy weird voice, and all of his music was poetic and just as bizzare.

Baroque-Fairly new to the music world, Baroque is veru out there. sometimes they sound like heavy metal singers, others like detective movie composers ot pop ingers. They have a very expandable array of music, and are fun to sing along to

PANIC*Channel- another "new" band, These guys are real rockers, but unlike most J Rock, they seldom dress up, and foucus on looking real and fun (like a happy grunge)

J-pop vs J-rock....Final outcome=J-pop wins**

I put those up there for nebs to the subject ,not fans, newbs. That should give them a general idea of what there music is like. And Ill have you know Yoko Kanno had won numerous awards on her compositions throughout her career. Im not saying that there the most popular but they are known for they're works on animes.

Yeh, Kanno-sama is popular, but its not something you see Teens walk around with in their players. She does movie/anime music for the most part.

*stares*
J rock is better, J Pop is just easier on the ears. J rock culture is so much more interesting..its so different than anywhere else on the planet!

I think if you want to get someone into J Music, you should probably stay away from anime influance(although I know its hard to not do that) That ends up confusing alot of people..
