Title: The Rule Book
Rotgut - March 19, 2006 11:49 AM (GMT)
Here is the text from the rule book Mark has in season one. I don't know if it is all right, cause I had to squint at some of the words to get it right.
Pigface
Pigface is a snorting, slobbering, squealing, slurping, gross-looking creature who devours absolutely everything in sight. With a voice that can go from deep and threatening, to a high-pitched whine when he's upset.
Pigface is a formidable foe if only because of the personal strength it requires to face off against his cool. A good strong squeal and a long loud belch are his trademarks.
Ace must defeat Pigface on Level 10, if there is to be any hope for the rest of the world.
I can't generally lead Lady Illusion's file much, but the first line is "Lady Illusion is tall, dark and sultry and a voice that reflects more mysterious powers." The second paragraph is something about her powers and the third one is something about Ace must overcome her if there is any chance left to save the world And there is also something about Ace's relationship with Sparx at the bottom.

You actually managed to read that? Yay! It'd be good if you could figure out what LI's says... but I know I had alot of trouble trying to read that one. I might try again. I'm also pretty sure that you can see one of the pages Mark is reading with Random Virus on it. Think you'd be able to read that one? :)

I can't find the picture! Help!

This is what I managed to get from the LI page:
Character: Lady Illusion is tall, dark and sultry, with a voice that apparently holds mysterious powers. When..., Lady Illusion can morph into a...
This lady is no lady at all, and certainly no babysitter. Her powers of illusion have resulted in a personality that is as empty (?) as her ability to manipulate her shape.
Although beautiful, this lady is to be feared. Ace must overcome Lady Illusion’s… if he has any hope at all of (saving his?)…relationship with Sparx and the entire world.

I believe that last one caused some programming-theory trouble, am I right, Sarah?

Well, judging from that last line (and a bit of imagination for missing words), perhaps in-game LI was supposed to cause Ace some... distraction. Of course, this doesn't mean that in real world she can't really fall in love with him. And I supposed it would give her a convincing argument for Lord Fear about trying to trick Ace Lightning into giving over a piece of the Amulet. So... that brings up the question... is Ace falling in love with her just programming? Because in game she is supposed to at least distract him? Or is it real love? Maybe this is why LI is all over the place about whether she really loves Ace or not. After all, it does appear that she should be able to flirt and whatnot without actually loving him...
Also... Ace's relationship with Sparx? Now what does that mean? Friendship or more? :P Is Sparx really slightly jealous/upset at the end of the last ep because of Ace/LI relationship? And if she is, is it real, or just left over programming?
I should stop asking questions now...

Nothing in the rulebook said they could fall in love.--Mark, ep 6.
This, obviously, is canon, and more so than a blurred screenshot. If LI had been programmed to try to distract him in that fashion then Mark's line would have more likely been more along the lines of "Nothing in the rulebook said he could fall for her". It's also fairly strongly suggested that game!LI is very loyal to Fear, though (ep 10) he does effectively order her to flirt with/distract Ace to accomplish his evil schemes (upon which she seems to run through a similar script with Ace as she does later with Fear). So, yeah, I really don't think there could have been much in-game Ace/LI-ness based on Mark's line, though fake flirtation (the "love me/loves me not" thing that Ace seemed to take much more seriously) is common enough in fight scenes of that dynamic.
As to whether or not LI cares about Ace, the one thing I can actually identify as not merely programming constraints/fear is her giving him the emotions--on Kilobyte's orders, after he's happily spent the past few months without bothering to try to contact her. And an episode or two later, she's trying to help him again.
Ace/Sparx isn't necessarily gameverse canon--she could hate LI for reasons other than jealousy over Ace (after all, Ace/LI was almost certainly not gameverse canon). But I think the main rationale for Sparx' hypothesized crush on Ace would almost have to be gameverse remnants--and she's spent less time on Earth than Ace and LI, too. But I do think that Ace/Sparx/Random's feelings for each other are genuine friendship as it stands, and I'm racking my brains to wonder what the distinction between gameverse-originating romantic love and gameverse-originating friendship is, whether the former is necessarily more coercive than the other. There's the Bad Example of canon non-con in Fear/LI, but I'm not so sure that qualifies as romantic love at all; I guess it's because of the more intrusive and dominating nature of romantic love that makes me think 'ick mindrape' when it comes to the possibility of gameverse-coerced relationships. And of course in the real world Ace, Sparx and Random have knocked up a good few hours protecting and supporting each other, so their friendship has that base on it too, and because they have the same goals and fairly compatible personalities there's nothing that says they can't remain friends even through programming revelations.

He orders her to DISTRACT Ace, not necessarily to “flirt” with him. He’s aware that Ace will take LI seriously for her power if anything. Maybe he’s also suspicious at this point in time, but he doesn’t order her to flirt.
The rest I’m too tired to delve into.

True, but he doesn't seem at all concerned about, you know, sending her off alone to 'distract' a guy... He doesn't actually order her to flirt, but somehow I doubt he'd have been too disturbed as long as Ace turned up at the appropriate time to be eradicated. I tend to categorize LI/Fear as being very much about power rather than sentiment.
